Recap

Julia struggles with finding something productive to do with her magic after Quentin's death. She focuses on trying to find a way to stop the magic surges.

She is later visited by Sir Effingham III, a humanoid pig from Fillory, who wants to know where Quentin is, as the apocalypse is coming. Sir Effingham refuses to let Julia partake on the quest because she is a woman, but she decides she's going to save the world anyway.

Penny 23 is recruited by Dean Fogg and becomes a professor at Brakebills. He struggles to connect with his students, who are inexperienced travelers, but makes some strides after speaking with Julia.

Eliot and Margo are trapped 300 years in the future on Fillory and can't go back to earth. Their attempts to travel back in time prove unsuccessful. While Eliot is ready to give up, Margo is determined to see it through.

They also learn Josh and Fen were executed 300 years ago when the Dark King came to power.

Alice is deeply affected by Quentin's death and spends most of the episode depressed. She ends up stealing his book from the Library and attempts to resurrect him at the end of the episode.

Kady is still championing the hedges. After the Library has failed to remove Reid's Mark from the affected hedge witches, she and Pete decide to take matters into their own hand.

The Magicians Season 5 Episode 1 Quotes

Fogg: Ah, god damn it. Shit. My apologies.
Julia: Dean Fogg?
Fogg: I was waiting for the right moment to interject, and well, that never came.
Penny: Are you drunk?
Fogg: No, and I’m sorry about the scotch. I was smelling it.

Penny: Julia, you ready? Wow, wow, you look …
Julia: Overdressed.
Penny: Great.
Julia: I thought you said this was a date.
Penny: I said I was taking you out and to dress appropriately.
Julia: That means dress up. You totally told me to dress up.
Penny: I should have been more specific.
Julia: Good. Glad to hear you accept the blame.
