This Is Us Season 6 Episode 12 tells the story of the end of Kate and Toby's marriage.

The night after Jack's accident, Toby tells Kate that he will move back to LA and see a marriage counselor with her. He is willing to do whatever it takes to fix their marriage. They hold hands in the kitchen.

But despite their best intentions, things get worse instead of better. Toby is unhappy with his new job and unhappy that Kate is always late to couples therapy because she stops to talk to Jack's teacher. The counselor suggests Kate and Toby have dinner alone to reconnect, but their time together devolves into a loud, ugly argument over Kate's tendency to criticize the way Toby is with the kids.

Kate decides to end the marriage, but Toby isn't ready to let go.

Meanwhile, in the future, Kate begins dating Philip, but fears another implosion like her marriage with Toby. Philip shares with her the painful story of the end of his first marriage and tells her he is trying to be happy again.

Things improve slightly during mediation and Toby wants to try again, but Kate turns him down.

This Is Us Season 6 Episode 12 Quotes

Beth: You are a beautiful bride and this is going to be a perfect day.
Kate: No, it isn't. A million things are going to go wrong, but it's okay.
Beth: Kate Pearson. You're the most Zen bride I've ever seen. Have you been hitting the CBD pen I've got in my drawer?

Toby: I know that you're getting married in a few hours. Congratulations. I just wanted to say... Kate, you know what you said to me when you signed our divorce papers?
Kate: I remember.
Toby: I wanted to say, I see it now. I'm sorry that it took me so long. If only I had a crystal ball to see where this was going to end up.
Kate: Yeah. Life would be so much easier if we could live it backwards.
