A dead teenager is found in a lake, and a man rushes to see if it’s his daughter, but she is confirmed to be still missing.

Three years later, Colter travels to Aurora, Vermont, where the man searching for his daughter, Gavin Russo, has hired Colter. Gavin insists Lana is still alive and believes she wouldn’t hurt herself as the cops think.

He shows Colter a picture in a newspaper of someone he believes to be Lana at a county fair.

Colter runs facial recognition on the photo, but it’s too grainy to produce a match.

Colter meets with Detective Brock, who was working on Lana’s case, and she thinks Gavin is in denial. She tells Colter that Lana and the deceased teenager, Jamie, were outcasts and left behind notes and journal entries that pointed to suicide.

She also tells him they were obsessed with the paranormal and an old mental hospital in town. Colter then watches a video Lana made about the hospital, but he and Detective Brock visit it.

While at the hospital, Colter doesn’t find anything but does get a call from the photographer who took the picture of the teenager at the fair and sends him the images. After running it through facial recognition at the police station, it’s confirmed to be Lana.

Colter tells Gavin the news and then asks if she has any friends. Gavin mentions Toby, her old lab partner, and Colter visits him.

Toby tells Colter that he believes Lana and Jamie were recording messages they heard from spirits in their journals and that the three of them went to the hospital one night shortly before Lana disappeared, and he had an encounter with a spirit who hurt him.

Colter and Detective Brock watch Toby’s video from that night at the hospital, and they see another heat signature that wasn’t the teens.

They travel back to the hospital, and Colter finds a man inside, who he chases outside before capturing.

The man, Richard, tells Colter and Detective Brock that he saw Lana the night she vanished near the river in a yellow raincoat with someone in a black raincoat. This sparks a memory for the Detective, who remembers a case involving a murdered teenager found wrapped in a yellow raincoat.

Colter visits the murderer from that case, Errol, who said he was taught by his dad and had a demon living inside him. Colter asks him about some of his belongings that were found, and he says they belonged to an old tenant, and he kept them. But Colter later discovers no one with that name ever lived near Errol and wonders if Errol had an accomplice.

Colter visits Errol’s sister, Maeve, and after she leaves the room to make tea, he finds a tote bag from the county fair blood drive, a booth Lana was spotted at in the photo, and a red string that was also at the hospital.

Colter goes looking for Lana, and Maeve attempts to strangle him, but he knocks her out. He then finds Lana tied up in the basement.

Lana is then reunited with her father and Toby.
