The Vampire Diaries was a defining series for The CW.
What initially appeared as the network jumping on the bandwagon of the vampire craze that was reignited by the Twilight movies blossomed into a hit drama series that garnered strong ratings for most of its run, and even spawned a spin-off, The Originals.
While some of the cast members were unknowns at the time of the series hitting the air back in 2009, they were well-known by the time the series wrapped in 2017.

1. The Original Cast
When the series debuted, it included a mixture of new and veteran TV stars. Even some of the seasoned veterans were propelled to further stardom as a result of the series' success...
2. Nina Dobrev, Then...
Dobrev was the female lead when the series kicked off, and the former Degrassi star quickly blossomed into a household name as a result of her excellent acting skills. Dobrev exited the series after Season 6, but returned for the series finale in March 2017.
3. Nina Dobrev, Now...
Dobrev moved on to movies after her tenure on the fantasy drama, and has appeared in xXx: Return of Xander Cage and Flatliners. She starred on CBS comedy series, Fam for one season. She also starred in Run This Town in 2019.
4. Paul Wesley, Then...
Paul played one-third of the series' most well-known love triangle. He played Stefan Salvatore. Before the series, he had roles in TV shows such as Another World, Guiding Light and 8 Simple Rules.
5. Paul Wesley, Now...
Wesley moved on to directing after leaving the series and directed an episode of Shadowhunters in 2017. In March 2018, he joined the New York Theater Workshop's production of Zurich in New York City. He now stars on CBS All Access drama, Tell Me a Story.
6. Ian Somerhalder, Then...
He played the villainous other Salvatore brother, Damon Salvatore. He feasted on the residents of Mystic Falls during the show's earlier days, before turning a corner when he realized how strong his love was for Elena.
7. Ian Somerhalder, Now...
Ian has kept a relatively low profile since the series wrapped. He and wife, Nikki Reed, welcomed their first child, Bodhi Soleil into the world in July 2017. He is attached to star in V-Wars, a vampire drama at Netflix.
8. Candice King, Then...
King played the sassy, but very likable Caroline Forbes through all eight seasons of The Vampire Diaries.
9. Candice King, Now...
Candice moved over to The Vampire Diaries spinoff, The Originals in 2018 as Caroline Forbes. She now works on a podcast with her former co-star Kayla Ewell.
10. Steven R. McQueen, Then...
Steven appeared as Elena's little brother, Jeremy who had a hard time following rules.
11. Steven R. McQueen, Now...
McQueen followed The Vampire Diaries up with a series regular role on Chicago Fire from 2015-2016. He also appeared in Chicago P.D. for three episodes in 2016. He reprised his Jeremy Gilbert role in one episode of Legacies in 2018.
12. Sara Canning, Then...
Sara played Aunt Jenna aka the coolest aunt on all of TV for the show's first two seasons.
13. Sara Canning, Now...
Sara appeared on the Canadian TV series Remedy as well as Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events and Once Upon a Time. More recently, she appeared on Wu Assassins.
14. Kat Graham Then...
Kat played the resident witch and loophole finder, Bonnie Bennett on all eight seasons of the series.
15. Kat Graham, Now...
Kat continued her music career after the series concluded and released her second studio album in June 2017. She now works on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, voicing April O'Neil.
16. Zach Roerig, Then...
Zach played Matt Donovan aka the nice kid that always had something against the supernatural forces in town.
17. Zach Roerig, Now...
Zach appeared on an episode of Fox's The Gifted 2017. The same year, he starred in Rings and starred in The Last Full Measure in 2019. He reprised his Matt Donovan role in a handful of episodes of Legacies when it premiered.
18. Kayla Ewell, Then...
Kayle played Vicki Donovan aka Matt's sister who was killed way too soon.
19. Kayla Ewell, Now...
Kayla appeared as a guest star in a bunch of TV series following her exit from The Vampire Diaries. In 2017, she landed a lead role on Youtube Red original series, Me and My Grandmother. She is now working on a podcast with Candice Accola.
20. Michael Trevino, Then...
The actor took on the role of Tyler Lockwood and appeared as a regular throughout Seasons 1 to 6 before becoming a recurring player for the final two seasons.
21. Michael Trevino, Now...
Trevino appeared in the 2018 movie, Out of Control. In 2018, he landed a role on The CW's Roswell reboot.
22. Matt Davis, Then...
Davis initially as a history teacher named Alaric Saltzman, but the character quickly became integrated in much of the series' leading plots.
23. Matt Davis, Now...
Matt went on to appear on The Originals in 2017 and 2018. He was added to the cast of a magic school spinoff of the series in 2018 titled Legacies.
24. Joseph Morgan, Then...
Joseph played the villainous Klaus Mikaelson on multiple episodes of the series.
25. Joseph Morgan, Now...
Joseph went on to star in The Originals from 2013-2018. In 2019, he appeared in Animal Kingdom, and also snagged a lead role in upcoming series, Brave New World.
26. Michael Malarkey, Then...
Michael appeared on The Vampire Diaries from Seasons 4 to 8 as Enzo.
27. Michael Malarkey, Now...
Michael moved on to History's Blue Book in 2018, and continued to release music as a solo artist.
28. Marguerite MacIntyre, Then...
Marguerite played Caroline Forbes' mother, Elizabeth Forbes.
29. Marguerite MacIntyre, Now...
Marguerite has kept a low profile since leaving the series. She did work behind the scenes on The Originals as a writer from 2013-2015. She now works behind the scenes on Legacies.
