We’re back!
And The Pitt Season 2 Episode 9 finally delivers something I’ve been expecting during an Independence Day shift at the ER, a firework mishap.
And Javadi and Whitaker take a few “L’s” while they get some new touchy cases. Also, our very own Shawn Hatosy dons his director’s hat for this one, and we’re all the better for it. So, let’s recap!
The Pitt drops us right back into the chaos, and the kiddos are still struggling with this whole analog thing. The fax machine isn’t working, radiology isn’t getting scans, and Javadi has a question that Robby, who is rude, will never answer.
Dana says they have to call in extra help. She knows people. Holiday weekend? No biggie!
We get our first firework injury. Finally! I was waiting for one of those.
A 12-year-old, Jude, comes in with two fingers blown off. His pinky and ring finger are gone, but the rest of his hand is working well enough. It looks GNARLY though.
Santos is incredibly good with the kid, who seems so sweet, but she’s been great with all the kids. For someone saying she doesn’t want to be in Peds, she’s a natural for it.
Mel is distracted again while treating the patient with an eye injury. She keeps dissociating, poor girl, possibly because Ellis didn’t calm her as much as hoped.
She tells Jesse she’s taking a break before his deposition. She’s clearly overstimulated and stressed. Then Lupe tells her that her sister is waiting for her in chairs.
McKay treats a woman with PCOS who is in pain. They have to run a pregnancy test despite it not being necessary for her case. The woman is surprised that hospital staff are still writing things down due to the system outage.
Mel is really struggling, and she’s overstimulated in the main lobby when she finds Becca and brings her back. It’s that stomachache.
Garcia comes in to check out the kid. He needs surgery, and he’s stressing out. But they have to wait for parental consent.
And Santos informs Robby that Jude has alcohol on his breath. Oof.
Santos catches Garcia as she heads back to surgery and asks if they’re still meeting after work. It’s clear Santos likes Garcia, but Garcia prefers to keep it casual, reminding Santos that she has other plans. Ouch!
You know what’s better than one King sister? Two. Dana and Robby agree when Mel introduces Becca to them, and sweet Becca seems genuinely excited to meet Robby. It’s precious.
Mel finds a room, but her reminder for her deposition in 15 minutes goes off. Please don’t let her miss this while she’s treating her sister. My girl is stressed OUT.
Princess won the Westbridge bet, but Perlah calls her out in Tagalog for having inside information, and she has to pay Perlah off for her silence.
They finally get the fax machine working, but it needs toner. Where can you find it? In 1988, Dana deadpans. Ha! Also, the last time I knew peace.
Both McKay and Whitaker are now working this case with the woman with PCOS, and I have no comment that won’t be snarky for that.
Just as I’m wondering if they’ll give the full spiel about how women with PCOS (especially Black women) often deal with doctors who don’t listen to them, properly diagnose them, or know how to address their pain, well, the patient sails right into that!
It’s a little preachy again, and it’s my primary point that got lost in translation in that Heather Collins piece, but I digress!
She was ignored for years, complained about her previous care, and doubled down when McKay excuses her former doctors by saying it’s hard to diagnose.
McKay suggests a transvaginal ultrasound, which she has had many times. She has some cysts, no ectopic pregnancy, even though she’d love to have kids soon, after her wedding.
McKay asks Whitaker his thoughts on the prognosis, and her pain is due to the discharge from one of the cysts. He says he plans to give her Naproxen and send her home. Free up a bed!
McKay points out how that may be exactly what the other doctors did, and maybe they should observe her for a while.
And Whitaker’s habit of dismissing pain levels in Black patients strikes again, folks! Genuinely sweet kid, means well, still biased.
Heading over to Mohan and Ogilvie, we have an English teacher with a kidney stone and a patient who gets under Ogilvie’s skin. His dad was also a teacher, which is apparently a sore spot. That’s interesting!
What are the odds Ogilvie projects daddy issues here? Ahmad, where’s the board?
Baran has the genius idea of bringing a radiologist down to the nurse’s station to deliver “wet-read” results. This whole concept has everyone intrigued, and also, this radiologist is super hot! Hello, handsome!
Patient Updates: The sister of our sweet obese patient, on his way to Presby with Abbot, called back from Arizona and says she’ll talk to him when he returns. And baby Jane Doe, they’ve cleared the paperwork so she can go into foster care!
Now, back to Mel. The Hospital attorney comes to retrieve her for the deposition, and Mel is already freaking out about her sister’s stomach. Robby gives Mel some words of encouragement.
And Langdon takes on Mel’s sister. He reassures Mel that Becca is in great hands, and then he has Mel turn off the lights on the way out. Honestly, this is so sweet, and Langdon is perfect and already knows how to handle Becca, so it puts Mel at ease.
Becca tells Langdon that Mel says lots of nice things about him. So cute!
Becca says she has pressure when she has to pee, and nothing is really coming out. It sounds like she has a UTI.
Morgan, the hospital attorney, shows up to take Mel to her deposition. Robby gives her encouragement and puts Langdon in charge of Mel’s sister.
Langdon reassures Mel that Becca is in good hands, and she says she knows. He asks Mel to turn off the lights, likely knowing that it helps.
She says that she feels pressure when she pees, and nothing comes out. And it sounds like she has a UTI.
Langdon is so great with neurodivergent people that it makes you wonder if he has an autistic relative or child. But it’s really great that he applies some of how he treats Mel to her sister.
Roxie lets McKay know that she’s ready to die, basically. And the kids come in to see their mom for what could be the last time. It’s very heavy.
The hot radiologist guy is distracting all the nurses and doctors watching him, and Robby swooping in to remind him he can use the USB port to download things and get moving is hilarious. Let the people thirst, sir!
Jude’s guardian arrives, and Robby goes to talk to her with Santos. She’s barely an adult herself. She’s irate about Jude’s actions, and she yells at him about his behavior and falling into the wrong crowd.
But then Robby tells her about his high BAL, which means they have to call social services in. She’s immediately angry that they took her brother away from her and yells at Santos and Robby. Yeah, this won’t go over well!
Javadi, bless her heart, fumbles yet again when she assumes that the nurses are supposed to handle everything, including her putting patients’ names on the boards and stuff. So young, so naive.
She and Whitaker head to her patient, whom she forgot to put on the board, and the poor woman is in AFIB when they get there, and they have to resuscitate her while Javadi freaks out. Good grief, this has been a long shift!
Javadi freezes while they work on the patient, and you can tell this has her frazzled and she’s off her game big time. Just a full-on clusterfuck of epic proportion in large part because Javadi couldn’t figure out the analog system.
Good news, they found her X-Ray. Bad news? She has to get rushed to the OR now.
Robby takes his moment to pee when he sees Dylan in there with Jude and his sister. You have to grab every moment you can!
Santos and Joy are together, and what’s better is that they’re treating a furry. She overheated at a furry convention, and she has some suggestions about Santos’s costume — a dragon.
We get a brief intermission from the cases to let Mohan and McKay talk about relationship stuff. McKay thinks about how she never got a chance to be in them with motherhood, school, and residency, and now may be her time.
Oh, she’s definitely meeting that hot patient later.
And Mohan realizes that her mother, like that elder patient who faked an injury to see her, is just lonely. And she can get it. She’s starting to think her own biological clock is ticking.
But back to the chaos. Reinforcements are here!
Retired clerk Monica steps in. She got laid off because of technology, and now she’s in her element. Monica goes in on Larry and Antoine, and she’s locked in on what to do next. She’s a total badass. I love her.
A woman from admin comes down to give them Whitaker’s new badge and mentions that they need runners, and Monica puts her to work after hearing she runs marathons. Gosh, I love this woman!
She’ll be running labs to where they need to be every 15 minutes.
Dylan, Robby, and Santos talk to Chantal about caring for her brother. She is attending college, and she’s taking care of him because her parents were deported back to Haiti less than a year ago.
They went to their immigration hearing and were detained, so she moved back home to take care of her brother. Otherwise, he’d have to move to Haiti with them, even though he’s never been and they were both born in the States.
“Being a big sister is a lot easier than being a surrogate mom.” – Chantal
The case touches Santos, and she tries to reason with Robby about getting DCFS called in, even though she was advocating it earlier in the day for another patient. As Santos puts it, abuse trumps neglect.
Here, she feels these siblings cannot be separated. She doesn’t feel it’s right, and Robby reminds her that many things that happen to people there aren’t right.
I can see how they’ve taken a muted approach to the ICE storyline if this is it.
Garcia lays into Javadi about errors and incompetence in caring for her patient, Barnes. Now the woman needs surgery instead of a simple procedure. Shamsi will operate, and Garcia reminds her never to trust anything or anyone else when the system is down.
Garcia has been chewing people out this whole season!
Whitaker tries to reassure her, but honestly, Nepo Baby needed that lambasting.
Outside, Dana takes a smoke break, but when sweet Emma comes out there, she asks her what she said to Ilana to change her mind.
Emma shares, and it’s clear that she has a knack for this even though she’s still intimidated by all the chaos. And Dana expresses pride in her, which is honestly the best vote of confidence!
McKay and Whitaker’s patient is in extreme pain, and they have to give her morphine. They figure out her ovary is twisting, and that’s what’s causing the pain because it’s cutting off the blood supply. She needs surgery to save her ovary.
Well, looky there! It’s a damn good thing they didn’t send her home as Whitaker planned!
A wild Abbot appears! That field trip to Presby went well, and Howard is as much of an Abbot fan as I am. Go figure!
He needs his surgery, but he wants to talk to his sister before he goes under. Especially since he has a 50/50 shot of dying on this table during surgery. And Abbot undermines Garcia’s urgency to make it happen.
Whitaker gets Howard’s sister on the phone via video chat, and they catch up and have the sweetest moment, and I’m not crying or anything, I swear.
They plan on catching up for the holidays. They have to wheel him away before she can tell him that she loves him. Dammit, The Pitt already took Louie away from me; they better not do the same for Howard. I’m stressed!
Dylan concludes that DCFS doesn’t need to get involved and that Chantal is a great guardian, but they’ll likely check out her home after Jude’s surgery, and they also add that, ultimately, Jude may be better off in Haiti with his parents.
Patient Check: McKay checks in with Roxie again. I know that this case is sad, but the way it’s dragging on is unbearable. McKay and Roxie talk about dying and God, and it’s just so heavy. It’s like they’ve been priming us to sympathize more with Roxie’s need to die because the waiting is almost torturous.
Back to Abbot, it’s very evident that this case with Howard has deeply affected him. It’s a moment that piques curiosity about him, as he’s been the most authentic in treating Howard with genuine compassion, like another person rather than a project.
If something happens to Howard, Abbot is going to be on that damn rooftop ledge, isn’t he?
In other news, Abbot does tell Robby that he likes Baran and thinks she’ll be a great replacement while Robby is away. He also expresses concern and wariness about Robby’s choice to take off like this.
He doesn’t think Robby can handle being with his own thoughts for that long.
You just make sure you come back, and if it gets dark, you call me. – Abbot
Love the Robby and Abbot friendship; no one knows him like Abbot, and he’s well aware that this much time alone may not be as great as Robby thinks.
There’s also the very real fear that the guy prone to suicidal ideation may not come back. I love that they can stand in the darkness together, but Robby seems to dismiss that and keep on moving.
And Abbot has to grab a nap before his shift starts. Something tells me this won’t be the last of him, though.
Fresh off of almost sending a woman to her death, Whitaker is in the doctor’s lounge eating when Robby comes in to give him his shiny new doctor’s badge and congratulate him on some great work earlier — one of the other cases he didn’t flub, but I can’t remember which ones that would be, honestly.
Bless Robby, if this isn’t proof that his favoritism keeps him from seeing when his favorite is struggling, then what is?
He tells Whitaker how proud he is of him and dives right into talking about Amy, the widow, and his relationship with her. Robby and Whitaker talk, and Robby gives him a talk about boundaries.
Whitaker seems to realize that he does, in fact, need to put up some boundaries.
And Robby throws him a curveball by asking Whitaker to house-sit for him while he’s away. Ahh, he has bequeathed his home to the favorite son!
Apparently, Abbot doing nude yoga at sunrise and potentially startling Robby’s neighbors is why he’s rethinking letting Abbot house-sit.
I mean, that sounds like a show worth appreciating. How dare Robby rob them of such a view!
It’s nice that Whitaker can save on rent, but what if Santos needs it? Sheesh. Goodness knows, Garcia has made it clear she won’t be hanging around at the apartment much.
Robby is just casually leaving Santos financially short and out of the company!
It’s evident Robby sees himself in Whitaker, and it’s cute. I’m a team father/son dynamic, but you all can enjoy those moments however you deem fit!
But this is also another subtle but alarming moment for Robby. He jokes about how Whitaker can keep his bachelor pad if he doesn’t come back. And it’s just another tally in a book filled with them that highlights Robby’s suicide ideation and what this trip could potentially be about.
Setting things up and leaving things behind for people you care about, these are small gestures Robby does all season that feel like little nods at “goodbye.”
The real queen right now is Monica, who is running the ED like she’s commanding the Navy, baby. She’s on fire! Organization! Finally!
While Donnie is walking out the furry patient, he catches the news, you guys, this show is INSANE. Why? The lobby is already filled to the max, but now a deadly waterslide collapse just happened, and they’re about to flood the pit.
Grab a snack and drink some electrolytes, it’s about to get real!
