Stargate Origins: Ordered to Series!

Stargate is officially returning!

Well, it's not exactly a revival. It's a brand new spin-off series that will be launching on a new dedicated digital platform titled Stargate Command.

MGM's debut premium digital series will center on a young Catherine Langford as she finds herself on an unexpected adventure to know the truth about what lies beyond the Stargate as she attempts to save Earth from something that's very dark.

Catherine Langford portrayed the character on Stargate SG-1, but this one will be set many years before the original series.

"We saw a need for a definitive hub for the Stargate fanbase to continue to enjoy news and content, both old and new,” adds Chris Ottinger, president of worldwide television distribution and acquisitions at MGM.

“Stargate Command will open a new door for the community to celebrate and interact with all content in a way that has never been done before."

“We’ve been eager to revisit the Stargate franchise, and create an all-new story that honors the founding mythos and gives loyal fans more mystery and adventure,” said Kevin Conroy, President of Digital & New Platforms at MGM, in a statement.

“We view Stargate Origins as a ‘thank you’ to fans who have been keeping the spirit of the franchise alive for nearly 25 years."

We have to admit, it's one of the most shocking announcements to come from the TV industry in quite some time, but we're all for it.

The series began as a theatrical movie in 1994, before spawning the TV series, Stargate SG-1. That lasted for ten seasons and paved the way for Stargate: Atlantis and Stargate: Universe.

The franchise also spawned two television movies.
