I live in a different country but like (the majority) of people I'm soooooooooooooooooo shocked that ABC America have done this. Holy S*&t people 2008 HELLO gay relationships are just as natural as heterosexual why are people so homophobic. OMG!!! I'm like totally pissed off and annoyed I think Brooke Smith is such an amazing and the kind of actress I would love to become. To bad for Grey's if Sara does quit at the end of the season I wouldn't blame her.
I'm not sure if I'll watch the last episode with Brooke Smith either but it is her last so hmmmm, wonder how they leave the Callie/Erica relationship totally in shocked by this!!

Isn't it funny that this revelation of Brooke being let go from the show, comes right as Proposition 8 is being voted on. ABC have shown where they stand on it. If she was let go two months ago, why now, right before people get to vote to keep gay marriage in California (Or get rid of it, which would be disgusting) do ABC go and fire the openly gay character? I think it will backfire and hopefully draw out all the people who weren't going to vote, who are now angry that this character was axed to please the homophobes, no matter what spin ABC put on it. Go out and vote no on Prop 8, and show the networks that its ok to have gay couples on TV. This is the 21st century, not the middle ages.

I'm not going to complain to ABC. In fact, i thanked them. Not that i don't find it sad that Brooke and Sara were let go... because that is sad. I loved Callie. But, Callica was a disaster. It was going down the crapper already. Brooke was fired in September, so... she was never going to stay for this season. Her character was boring. I liked Callica to start with but, then it just got silly. Callie isn't gay. She was just curious, because she liked Hahn as a person. But, Callie always went back to Mark. Erica is definitely gay. So this really wasn't going to work from the beginning.
With Callica out of the way, MerDer should get more screen time. All the relationships on GA were put on the back burner because they were putting Callica as the front runner. They were clogging up the episodes, so the real relationships... that have always been dominant on the show (MerDer, Izzie/Alex) were made into book ends.
This also, give the opening for a Sadie/Mark romance.

I still can´t believe this! I really love Callica and Brooke Smith. They make Greys so much better. Their relationship is interesting, I´m so disapointed and angry... I´ve been tired of MerDer before and I´ve been so happy that there´s something new. I love Dr. Hahn ♥

I hope Hahn is gone...her character is SO unpleasant. I did not find her attractive in any way---mainly because her personality was always so negative. This is supposed to be such a great teaching hospital, yet all she does is belittle ANYONE who happens to be near her in the OR. One of the best parts of last week's episode was Bailey letting Hahn have it. I also have nothing against the lesbian story line but I believe most people are interested in the relationship--the love and emotions that have brought these 2 people together--yet every scene with Callie and Hahn revolved around their sexual dysfunction. It really was not appealing to me, and I think to most viewers. It was way too much information. I think the way that story played out really emphasized what to me is one of the biggest drawbacks to the writing on GA: it is very abusive to women. Look at Grey's mother--the very accomplished surgeon has a non-existent personal life. Grey--plagued by self-doubt and self-loa

McSmarty: You're most certainly welcome. I admire your strength in your decision making... I'm still stuck between watching because it is Brooke's last episode and not watching because I am so outraged! I'll be making my decision within the next two days.
I have also heard the rumors about Sara... and I believe them to be true. And I can only hope that she is CHOOSING to leave because she is as upset about this as many of us are. I'm sad to have to quite watching Grey's as well... but I will never be able to look at any of it the same after this. I'm also going to quit watching Private Practice because I'm refusing to watch ABC anymore. It's disgraceful and I wish Brooke was less classy so she could rip them apart in some interview and then land an awesome show somewhere that respects her as a person and an actress!

If Sara Ramirez does leave, it could be because of what's happening with Smith.
Smith was fired 2 months ago so she could have said then that she wanted out.
I hope it's not true because I love Callie.

If the rumors about Sara Ramirez are true, perhaps she decided to leave as a result of these recent developments? I know she's said in interviews before (like when she was on the View) that she thought it would be a good move for Grey's to start expanding its horizons and make efforts to change its rather homophobic image post-Isaiah. It would be sad to see her go, but I think she belongs on Broadway where the full range of her talents can be showcased. Though I'll never get tired of seeing her dance in her underwear.

brookesleaves: thanks for the links. I'm no longer watching the show--not even this episode. I've written fan fiction, followed every episode from the day one, but I can't support a show/network that would allow for such a thing to happen. As much as it will pain me to "breakup" with Grey's, it's more important that I "stick up" for what I believe. The homophobia that the writers fail to acknowledge counteracts all the efforts of the gay community. I won't support something that fails to recognize me as a human being capable of loving another human being (regardless of sex).
Brooke proven she's a talented actress; someone will snap her up for their show in a heartbeat.

Interesting how there are rumours circulation that Sara Ramirez will be leavin the show as well after ep 15. It seems that Ramirez wants to head back to Broadway.
But with Shonda's statement, I doubt it's true. Then again, stranger things have happened.

And stop watching. This thursday is Brooke's last episode... don't watch any more... if you even watch this one.
Those are about our only options. Perhaps if we complain as much as those who were against it did... they'll bring her back. Although, I doubt she'd come back after this. I certainly wouldn't.
I guess Brooke lovers around the world will just have to hope that she'll get picked up on a great show of her own.

Exactly, Shred. I think that having Erica have this huge revelation and then get left behind by Callie would be excellent for her development as a character. And if they were willing to explore same-sex possibilities for Callie in the future, why rewrite Sadie as a heterosexual? They can't possibly be entertaining the idea of introducing yet ANOTHER character... the show is already too cast-heavy to be able to give any of the storylines the attention/time they deserve.
Let's not forget that Shonda isn't the one who fired Brooke - the network did. What Shonda released in her statement is probably how she feels, but evidently her feelings are very much trumped by the network. For real, if the gay marriage on Brothers & Sisters goes under before the end of sweeps, we'll know that something is seriously up at ABC.

UPDATE: Shonda Rhimes has just released the following statement in response to this story: "Brooke Smith was obviously not fired for playing a lesbian. Clearly it's not an issue as we have a lesbian character on the show – Calliope Torres. Sara Ramirez is an incredible comedic and dramatic actress and we wanted to be able to play up her magic. Unfortunately, we did not find that the magic and chemistry with Brooke's character would sustain in the long run. The impact of the Callie/Erica relationship will be felt and played out in a story for Callie. I believe it belittles the relationship to simply replace Erica with 'another lesbian.' If you'll remember, Cristina mourned the loss of Burke for a full season."
If chemistry between the two was the case, why not just change the storyline? Why fire her? Very fishy...

November 4th, 2008 12:00 AM
Interesting, given that they've rewritten Melissa George's character to be straight, and ABC fired Rebecca Romijn, who plays a transwoman, from Ugly Betty.
I'm not sure how a network that fired Isaiah Washington for using an antigay slur and that had the cast of Grey's do PSAs for the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation can turn around and start purging its primetime lineup of openly LGBT characters... I'll be curious to see how long the gay marriage on Brothers & Sisters lasts.
I only began watching Grey's last season as a result of the Callie and Erica storyline (I'm a gay woman, and it's rare to see lesbian relationships portrayed in even a remotely realistic way on television), and I find every other character on the show to be pretty darn irritating (except for Sloan, he's a keeper), so suffice to say I'll be tuning in to the Office and 30 Rock after this week's episode.

Are you surprised? This is the show that dropped Gizzie because of a few very vocal haters, some who hated them because TR is gay in real life, didn't you think the extremely loud homophobes would scare them into dropping Callica too Once the show let haters scare them into dropping one storyline, they'll drop others after. The haters know their tactic work too, just whine extra loud and threaten to quit. ABC are cowards and Shonda will do their bidding.
Not only are Callica gone, but all the new gay characters are being rewritten as hetero according to Kristen.
And TR, their gay actor, gets no airtime anymore.
Homophobia and shallowness rules Grey and I for one am tired of it.
I loved both Gizzie and Callica and they got killed by haters.
