Round Table: "Life During Wartime"

by at . Comments

While fans gather in our Life During Wartime" include all things Dr. Hunt, being the Chief, and the unconventional but entertaining Mark/Callica love triangle ...

1. What was your favorite Grey's Anatomy quote from the episode?

McCritic: When Callie invited Mark for a drink and said, "You're good for more than just sex," I melted. Let's hope a non-lesbian feels the same way soon and falls for this hilarious man!

missingBurke: I liked Hunt's willingness to take advice from Derek and Sloan, saying this is day one for him as well. Just when you think you have this guy figured out, there's another component to him. I also loved Cristina's classic "RUN!"

iheartizzie: I'm going to go with Richard's heartfelt apology (or non-apology) to Meredith. He's made a lot of mistakes in his life and it's not always easy to admit them, let alone make things right, but it was very big of him to try.

  • Callie Torres and Erica Hahn Kiss
  • Marcus

2. More likely to end up as a couple: Callie and Erica, or Callie and Mark?

iheartizzie: After this past episode, Callie and Mark seem more likely to me. Will new intern Sadie be a better match for Erica than Callie, who ends up with Mark?

McCritic: Callie and Mark. The former is scarcely even hiding her reservations about Erica. Callie may have gotten involved in that relationship because men were letting her down; but Mark is now showing her that we sometimes get it right.

missingBurke: I'm not sure, but I am enjoying the evolution of the Sloan character. We learn a little bit more about him every week - something Grey's Anatomy is really good at - without sacrificing his trademark sarcastic one-liners.

3. Can Bailey be the Chief?

missingBurke: I think Bailey has proven to be a natural leader and teacher, one who leads by example and offers just the right balance of tough love and encouragement. I do worry about her not spending enough time at home, however.

McCritic: Not if she wants to maintain her marriage. Whatever happened to spending more time at home with the two Tucks anyway?

iheartizzie: They're both the best in the business - and have similar problems finding a work/life balance. She might as well be mini-Chief!

4. Should Meredith continue to read her mother's diaries?

McCritic: I don't really care... as long as this yawn-inducing story line doesn't continue to be the focus of the Mer/Der relationship.

iheartizzie: The armchair psychologist in me would tell Mer, look, girl, you've got to put down the diary. You've come so far. Ellis is gone, and you have to move forward, not relive the past by reading her innermost thoughts from decades past.

missingBurke: You know, I thought this was interesting the first time, but are they just using this to create faux Mer-Der tension at this point? Meredith deserves to be happy, and I get the feeling this is just a form of self-loathing.

5. Dr. Hunt: A great addition? Or the best addition?

iheartizzie: This guy's awesome. Just the kind of guy the hospital needs to shake things up, but a little damaged in his own right beneath that exterior.

missingBurke: I loved Burke. He was my absolute favorite Grey's Anatomy character. For that reason, it's hard to see Cristina having a romantic interest in anyone else. That being said, I do enjoy the character of Dr. Hunt. He's growing on me quickly.

McCritic: The greatest. Grey's Anatomy does a superb job of integrating new cast members into the show. Dr. Hunt has a solid back story, a possible love interest and an enemy in PETA. I'm a fan.

I live in a different country but like (the majority) of people I'm soooooooooooooooooo shocked that ABC America have done this. Holy S*&t people 2008 HELLO gay relationships are just as natural as heterosexual why are people so homophobic. OMG!!! I'm like totally pissed off and annoyed I think Brooke Smith is such an amazing and the kind of actress I would love to become. To bad for Grey's if Sara does quit at the end of the season I wouldn't blame her. I'm not sure if I'll watch the last episode with Brooke Smith either but it is her last so hmmmm, wonder how they leave the Callie/Erica relationship totally in shocked by this!!

Isn't it funny that this revelation of Brooke being let go from the show, comes right as Proposition 8 is being voted on. ABC have shown where they stand on it. If she was let go two months ago, why now, right before people get to vote to keep gay marriage in California (Or get rid of it, which would be disgusting) do ABC go and fire the openly gay character? I think it will backfire and hopefully draw out all the people who weren't going to vote, who are now angry that this character was axed to please the homophobes, no matter what spin ABC put on it. Go out and vote no on Prop 8, and show the networks that its ok to have gay couples on TV. This is the 21st century, not the middle ages.

I'm not going to complain to ABC. In fact, i thanked them. Not that i don't find it sad that Brooke and Sara were let go... because that is sad. I loved Callie. But, Callica was a disaster. It was going down the crapper already. Brooke was fired in September, so... she was never going to stay for this season. Her character was boring. I liked Callica to start with but, then it just got silly. Callie isn't gay. She was just curious, because she liked Hahn as a person. But, Callie always went back to Mark. Erica is definitely gay. So this really wasn't going to work from the beginning. With Callica out of the way, MerDer should get more screen time. All the relationships on GA were put on the back burner because they were putting Callica as the front runner. They were clogging up the episodes, so the real relationships... that have always been dominant on the show (MerDer, Izzie/Alex) were made into book ends. This also, give the opening for a Sadie/Mark romance. I can't wait to see how Erica decides to leave. She will probably, get really pissed that The Chief didn't fire Izzie, for her essentially stealing the heart for Denny. Erica will be so fixed on this, and ultimately... will choose to leave. She will kill the relationship between her and Callie...because obviously it wasn't going anywhere. Callie doesn't want Erica. So yeah. This episode should be really good though. If no Callica = More MerDer .... I'm all for it!

I still can´t believe this! I really love Callica and Brooke Smith. They make Greys so much better. Their relationship is interesting, I´m so disapointed and angry... I´ve been tired of MerDer before and I´ve been so happy that there´s something new. I love Dr. Hahn ♥

Everyone complain about ABC firing Brooke Smith and canceling the Callica storyline please!! Maybe if enough people complain they will do something about this. we can at least let them know how stupid they were to do that! copy and paste this link.

I hope Hahn is gone...her character is SO unpleasant. I did not find her attractive in any way---mainly because her personality was always so negative. This is supposed to be such a great teaching hospital, yet all she does is belittle ANYONE who happens to be near her in the OR. One of the best parts of last week's episode was Bailey letting Hahn have it. I also have nothing against the lesbian story line but I believe most people are interested in the relationship--the love and emotions that have brought these 2 people together--yet every scene with Callie and Hahn revolved around their sexual dysfunction. It really was not appealing to me, and I think to most viewers. It was way too much information. I think the way that story played out really emphasized what to me is one of the biggest drawbacks to the writing on GA: it is very abusive to women. Look at Grey's mother--the very accomplished surgeon has a non-existent personal life. Grey--plagued by self-doubt and self-loathing that all goes back to her mother. Izzie--cannot form a lasting relationship of merit--her true love dies and her second true love has to cheat on his wife and treat HER like dirt. Even Callie has to act like a moron when her NEW love (Hahn) opens up to her and becomes emotional after they are physically intimate. DOn't even get me started on Yang. And by the way, they have totally castrated McDreamy, he is acting like a whiny bitch ever since he figured out that he still loves Mer. His remarks and comments to Mer and about Mer are very degrading. Also, since when did he become so obtuse that he couldn't understand why she would be upset over not getting credited for their clinical trial???? He's been acting like a spoiled child and is SO unattractive. If it weren't for the hair I'd have given up on him long ago.

McSmarty: You're most certainly welcome. I admire your strength in your decision making... I'm still stuck between watching because it is Brooke's last episode and not watching because I am so outraged! I'll be making my decision within the next two days. I have also heard the rumors about Sara... and I believe them to be true. And I can only hope that she is CHOOSING to leave because she is as upset about this as many of us are. I'm sad to have to quite watching Grey's as well... but I will never be able to look at any of it the same after this. I'm also going to quit watching Private Practice because I'm refusing to watch ABC anymore. It's disgraceful and I wish Brooke was less classy so she could rip them apart in some interview and then land an awesome show somewhere that respects her as a person and an actress!

If Sara Ramirez does leave, it could be because of what's happening with Smith. Smith was fired 2 months ago so she could have said then that she wanted out. I hope it's not true because I love Callie.

Avatar

If the rumors about Sara Ramirez are true, perhaps she decided to leave as a result of these recent developments? I know she's said in interviews before (like when she was on the View) that she thought it would be a good move for Grey's to start expanding its horizons and make efforts to change its rather homophobic image post-Isaiah. It would be sad to see her go, but I think she belongs on Broadway where the full range of her talents can be showcased. Though I'll never get tired of seeing her dance in her underwear.

brookesleaves: thanks for the links. I'm no longer watching the show--not even this episode. I've written fan fiction, followed every episode from the day one, but I can't support a show/network that would allow for such a thing to happen. As much as it will pain me to "breakup" with Grey's, it's more important that I "stick up" for what I believe. The homophobia that the writers fail to acknowledge counteracts all the efforts of the gay community. I won't support something that fails to recognize me as a human being capable of loving another human being (regardless of sex). Brooke proven she's a talented actress; someone will snap her up for their show in a heartbeat.

Grey's Anatomy Season 5 Episode 5 Quotes

Erica: This is her angio? That thing is wrapped around five major arteries.
Miranda: It's bad, but I've got some ideas.
Erica: Good for you! Try them on someone who might actually live.

Erica: Don't get emotional Bailey. No one likes a girl who gets emotional.
Miranda: Still. I would like you on my team.
