Grey's Anatomy Funeral Scene Raises Questions, Emotions

at . Comments

As the rare, outdoor behind-the-scenes photos from the set proved without a doubt this week, the cast of Grey's Anatomy is giving George O'Malley his official sayonara.

We knew it was coming, but some are having a hard time coming to grips with the prospect of no more O'Malley. He was not just an original character, but a fan favorite.

Spotted on the set were Katherine Heigl, who plays Izzie Stevens, George's best friend, and a very pregnant Ellen Pompeo, who plays the title character, Meredith Grey.

A few of the men were also back to work: Justin Chambers, who plays Alex Karev, and Patrick Dempsey, who plays Derek Shepherd. Others may have been there, too.

The demise of George O'Malley was not scripted this way initially.

It turns out that Grey's Anatomy creator and executive producer Shonda Rhimes originally had a different opening sequence planned for the 6th season of Grey's Anatomy.

A flashback was supposed to take viewers to the hours when George was missing, from when he left the hospital to when he returned later on as a disfigured John Doe.

However, Knight reportedly declined to make a brief cameo and instead of seeing George's split-second decision to save the passerby's life that cost him his own, viewers will just have to watch Shonda Rhimes' alternative idea, the funeral scene.

Which brings us to the characters and George's coffin.

omg!! i was just watching season 3, the part where meredith goes into the after life (some kind of miracle) and when callie and izzie are fighting in the clinic about callie being married to george, callie tells izzie that she should acknowledge her as george's wife or he wouldnt talk to her anymore (or something like that). And then callie continues to say " you cannot afford to loose another friend, not when people around you keep..." she cuts off.
and then izzie says " dropping around like flies" And boy, was she right.

Anna, While I DO have a similar view of GA as you do (hell, they are my prime reason...and Mark) I do realize that from time to time we need something else. However I see your point. Meredith and Derek are the only official lead characters (pre-cancer SL) and in a way, the core story should be centered around Meredith and her surroundings as a surgeon and as a woman. Now that she and Derek are 'married', Derek is going to have an even more active role in Meredith's life than before, but Mer also has friends and other teachers. Derek has a whole life that we didn't knew about (and Mark too, for that matter) and should be explored, especially being a lead characters. Of course, courtesy of Izzie (or KH for that matter) we didn't get either. I hope that S6 has a better balance in characters. Just like S2/S3 had.

No,GREYSLOVER0316, because I knew that George was John Doe when he appeared in the ambulance and even before: when I saw the season finale promo. I'm a George fan and a Gizzie fan so it's not so difficult to find out why I knew.

This may sound weird but when watching the seen that this pic takes place in and not knowing that it was george on the table the guy looked nothing like george, but now that I know it is him it looks so much like George I feel stupid for not realizing it was him when I first watched the episode. Anyone else feel that way?

R.I.P. George. I can't imagine who is going to take his place. Who is going to be the funny, nice guy who is always there to help?
He helped Alex with his tests, Joe with his bar, Meredith with the intern test, Izzie to decide to do the surgery or when he support her with the LVAD. And so more....
I don't know why same people hate him. Season 5 without him was so dark.
Fab 5 is Grey's Anatomy. Is the effort of 5 intern trying to be surgens. At least it was at first. Now is a soap opera where the main issue is if Mer/Der are going to married.
BTW i don't like Alex anymore. I used to like him when he was bad boy but now - after all this effort from the writers to turned him into a good guy so he can be with Izzie and make haters happy - he is just a crying little baby. I know my english are bad. I hope you understand.

Oh come on Anna, yes, this is Grey's Anatomy but it can't be all about Meredith or MerDer,will be so boring.! Has to be another characters that make the show better and amazing, and one of them is George and the rest of the fab 5: Izzie, Cristina and Alex. You has to think that if all the episodes focus only in Mer and Derek relation, the show will only have two season.
I love all the fab 5, and especially George!!!. I miss him, he is my favourite.

Anna, it's hard for George to take screen time from Meredith when he hardly has any storylines.... blame Izzie!! Shonda Rhimes has forgotten about George ever since season three.... even when he had more screen time, he was never as much and as important as the others. I love George, I can't believe they're killing him off... this show is going to suck without him!!

Who cares bout Meredith n Derek. Buuuu.....

I watch Grey’s Anatomy because of Meredith and Derek and I have always enjoyed all of the other characters that make this series ensemble a great show. But come on people, the show is supposed to be about Meredith, and how her story has unfolded from the first season with her relationship with Derek. Sure it has been important to have all of the other characters revolve around the stories to help these two main characters grow and expand, but ultimately I am interested in watching the Meredith and Derek story unfold. George O’Malley, Izzie Stevens and even Cristina Yang’s storylines have dominated the show for awhile. In the first season, count how many times and how long Meredith appears on screen as her story unfolds from the first and second season with Derek—count the scenes they have together and how long it is in the first two seasons then compare them to how many times and how long their scenes are in the proceeding seasons. I am sorry that George O’Malley’s character has been killed from the series because George has been an integral part of the story however, I believe that there are too many characters on the show that require too much time taken away from the Meredith and Derek characters. I was also looking forward to the Izzie character being killed off the show since she has dominated the storylines more than anybody including the Meredith and Derek characters. Even though the Izzie character is staying with the series for now, I hope that the character and more of her story does not continue to dominate the series; last season was very promising with glimpses of the expansion of Karev's and Callie's character and I hope season six will continue to expand some of the other characters as well. However, I am hoping that with one less character, season six will have more time to continue the expansion of the Meredith and Derek characters and provide more screen time for these two as it did the first two seasons.

Bringing Burke back would be good. George was Burke's Guy after all but...Addison? I mean, I like her but I don't see a real reason why she should come back. She wasn't close to George at all. Not really seeing why. I love Addison but I don't think she should be in George's funeral. I bet that the next time Addie is back on GA will be to deliver McBaby. I am almost sure because I don't see another crossover soon so... :S

Grey's Anatomy Quotes

Did you say it? 'I love you. I don't ever want to live without you. You changed my life.' Did you say it? Make a plan. Set a goal. Work toward it, but every now and then, look around; Drink it in 'cause this is it. It might all be gone tomorrow."

Meredith (closing voiceover)

Burke was- He took something from me. He took little pieces of me, little pieces over time, so small I didn't even notice, you know? He wanted me to be something I wasn't, and I made myself into what he wanted. One day I was me Cristina Yang, and then suddenly I was lying for him, and jeopardizing my career, and agreeing to be married and wearing a ring, and being a bride. Until I was standing there in a wedding dress with no eyebrows, and I wasn't Cristina Yang anymore. And even then, I would've married him. I would have. I lost myself for a long time. And now that I'm finally me again, I can't. I love you. I love you more than I loved Burke. I love you. And that scares the crap out of me because when you asked me to ignore Teddy's page, you took a piece of me, and I let you. And that will never happen again.
