Grey's Anatomy Review: "Slow Night, So Long"

at . Comments

It was extremely entertaining watching Cristina switch careers and enter into the bartending world on last night’s episode “Slow Night, So Long.”

So far this season, Cristina has yet to let me down in terms of bringing it each week. I really wish she would get over her issues and return to being the doctor we all know and love, but until then, this week did bring in some light humor and laughs.

Cristina the Mixologist

Joe's face says it all.

The group goes to Joe’s to celebrate Derek’s grant and they find Cristina behind the bar wearing more make-up than I’ve ever seen her wear. Everyone is shocked, but Derek is the most concerned, feeling responsible for his demise and unable to enjoy his own victory.

But, just because Derek isn’t having a grand ol' time, doesn’t mean any of the rest of them aren’t boozing it up. Bailey and Teddy decide to let it all go and drink their problems away. They both end up back at the hospital because they're too drunk to drive home.

This leads Bailey and April to an unusual shared moment. Bailey opens up to April and tells her not to just give it up to any Alex, but to wait for a guy that’s worth it. Of course, April now believes they will be the best of friends, but Bailey shuts that down right away.

Meanwhile, Callie just wants to get over Arizona. Mark tells her maybe she should just clean the pallet and start fresh. Who expected to find these two back in the sack?

From the look on Callie’s face in the morning, the sorbet, so to speak, didn’t change anything. In fact, it looks like it only made things more confusing and awkward for her.

If and when Callie and Arizona get back together, how will she explain this situation?

Calliope and Mark

This is going to be awkward now ...

Jackson is still dealing with the emotional trauma by screaming out in the middle of the night. Lexie tries to get him to open up about his issues, but he snaps at her. Thankfully, by the end of the episode he kind of lets her in by telling her:

Jackson: Just tell them that he's gonna feel pretty awful. That he lived and his brother died. That every time he feels glad to be alive, he'll hate himself for it. Just tell them to look out for it. He won't want to talk about it, but he'll be glad they know. | permalink

I was happy to see that Meredith didn’t wait to hear back from Dr. Stark. He in no way shape or form is able to fill Arizona’s loving and caring shoes. Who knows whether or not her patient would have survived if she and Alex didn’t dive head first into surgery on her patient?

It was strange that Joe let Cristina get as drunk as she did, even if he fired her beforehand. The patrons of the bar loved the stripper moves, but I was shocked that Owen wasn’t more upset that his new wife was dancing all up on some other guy.

Overall, I did find this episode to be pretty hilarious. With all the normal seriousness, it’s nice to see some funny drunk moments.

One final thought that my lovely man pointed out to me: why do they all still live in the same house? I get Izzie and George, but that was bygones ago! It’s time for Lexie, April, Alex, and Jackson to fly the coop and let these two lovebirds get their privacy back.

Since we have a two-week turkey break, I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving. Here are a few of my favorite Grey’s Anatomy quotes from last night:

Meredith: Good morning.
Derek: Goodnight. | permalink
Meredith: Remember when the chief said only two of us would make it?
Alex and Meredith: I thought it would be me and Cristina. | permalink
Meredith: Under the cover of darkness, people do things they never do under the harsh glare of day. Decisions feel wiser. People feel older. But, when the sun rises, you have to take responsibility for what you did in the dark. And face yourself under the cold harsh light of day. | permalink

Mark: Water?
Callie: I want sorbet.
Mark: Sweet tooth? I think I've got cookies around here somewhere. Oh. Oh. Really?
Callie: Really. | permalink
Derek: (about Cristina) If she's going to act like a stripper, I'm going to act like a bouncer. | permalink
Teddy: Crap! I'm really drunk. | permalink
Bailey: Young people need love too. | permalink
April: Dr. Bailey! Ugh! I'm so glad you're here.
Bailey: I'm not here. You don't see me. I just need a nap before I go home, but first, I need some food. | permalink
Alex: (to Meredith) Let's play a game. There's only one rule. You don't call Starke. | permalink
Bailey: Sexual sorbet? Hahaha! I love it. | permalink
Callie: Did she mention me?
Teddy: What?
Callie: I know she writes to you so I'm asking you if she's mentioned me. | permalink
Derek: Yang is bartending. You know how disturbing that is? | permalink
Teddy: Okay again Mr. Perfect married guy you don't have to open your mouth. | permalink
Bailey: First round is on me.
Callie: Um guys? | permalink
Jackson: Nice face.
Alex: At least I can do surgery. How's that hand?
Jackson: It'd be better if you hadn't run your face into it. | permalink
Meredith: We doctors take pride in the fact that we can basically sleep standing up. Anytime, anywhere. But, it's a false pride because the truth is after twenty hours without sleep you might as well just come to work drunk, doctor or not. So it's no wonder that fatal medical errors increase at night when we doctors are proudly sleeping on our feet. Recently our communal pride has been shattered and our egos have been wounded by new laws that require we sleep all day before we work all night. We are not happy about it. But, as someone who might need medical care, you really should be. | permalink

Love all of this episode but as a Mallie fan I have to say that them together is what I love the most!
How can I tell you what I see in Mark eyes when Callie makes her request…?!?!
I see pure love but I also see fear… Fear of what could happen if they have sex again.
They start their relation with the sex and then they become best friend, they know each other so well now.
They are each other person, they are soul mate, more soul mate than anybody in the show to my eyes. Mark has always been there for Callie… Trough everybody and everything and Callie do the same for him. Mark is a better man not thank to Lexie but because of Callie, for what she teach to him, for what she says to him.
But I think that they are so scared to admit this love. Because Mark can’t live without Callie in his life. And because Callie doesn’t survive at the lost of Mark. And if they go down that road it’s too difficult, they can’t come back easily. The risk is too high!
I’m scared too if I think to that. But I want them together.
I hope that Shonda rethink to the “Arizona and Callie made for each other thing because I think that the two made for each other are only Mark and Callie. And I keep up my hope that you writers have to them a great storyline, not only sex.
Because they are more than that.
Anyway see them hook up was so damn hot… I don’t know if I prefer to be Mark or to be Callie in that scene!!!
I only know that I want them to fall in love!
Sorry for Slexie and Calzona fans but I’ve waited too long.

Oh Jesus... I've a lot of things to say..
How can I tell you how great it was to me see Alex save that baby life??
He's been trough so much and he's still here: strong, caring and I'm sure he'll become such a super pediatric surgeon!!!
And him with Meredith...oh they rock!!! If Meredith hasn't Derek I think he could be her McDreamy!!!
Bailey. I always like her. She's always the best but in this episode she makes me laugh so hard... Drunken Bailey has to happen again! Please!
Not a fan of Teddy but in this episode i like her too.
April is growing on me, yeah she really does.
Jackson...I feel so sorry for him. But I think that he can start again. He can do that. And he can do that even better with Lexie.
Yes, I'm totally ok with those two to become a couple. Lol!!! I saw something special between them, something magic, something "soul mate type".
And happy to see Lexie a little more mature!
I also like the scenes with all the resident together and the scenes in the car with all the attending.
And I love Meredith house. I want to live in a house so full of people too.
Cristina is killing me. I want her back, I want her to feel better, I want her to move on, I want her to be able to love her work as before. But I know she comes back so I'm waiting. But, really, bartending is not her work. She's the star in the OR.
And Owen how much he loves her??
And much McDreamy is he??? With Mer and with Cristina! I want a husband like him me too. Proud of you McDreamy!
And finally...Mark and Callie!!! Oh they are my two favourites characters, my favourite couple.
I want more of them! I want them to be more than bes friends, more than friends with benefits. I want them to become a couple. A real one. I feel and see such a big chemestry and I always think that their love is so big and real! I could die for a spin off with them together!!!

Does anyone know the full quote Callie said about a girl dancing on top of a bar is really just a girl dancing by herself? I thought it was very insightful especially for Callie being drunk.

bartender cristina was amazing! i can't stop laughing! but i really didn't expect owen's reaction when he saw his wife dancing like a stripper over that guy, i thinked he would be upset... and i'm so sorry for callie, i can't wait until arizona is back! and please get mark and lexie together, they MUST be together.

April, Jackson, Lexie, & Alex are all living in Casa Grey because someone is so disturbed on the writers' room to think this was a good idea that a grown married couple should host four doctors and get zero privacy. I feel for Derek. I really do feel for him for having to live in a college dorm.

Mark and Callie: I really, really, REALLY, want them together. Always have, always will. They have chemistry, they are in touch with each together's needs and they know each other very, very well. It doesn't seem like this will happen especially after seeing the look on Callie's face at the end of the romp but here's to wishful thinking.... Meredith and Alex: Shonda Rhimes and crew, PLEASE continue to develop this relationship. I LOVE their interaction and regard for one another. I love that Alex is turning out to be quite the ped's surgeon and that Meredith relied on his expertise to assist on her case. Meredith, the surgeon: Needs more work GA writers! Two weeks ago you were on the right track now let's see Meredith have more consistent badass surgeries/patients please. Lexie and Jackson: Hope this develops into something more. Not sure if I want them in a relationship but I definitely think Lexie needs a person and Jackson can be it because he needs a person too. April: End her contract please. She's annoying and it's not getting any better. Derek: Love how he feels responsible for Cristina because she's Meredith's person (thus, family) and because she saved his life. Loved the way he looked out for her without pushing her. He is so McDreamy. Patrick Dempsey is fantastic. He can break your heart, make you jump for joy or fall in love with just a look. Owen, the husband: The jury is still out on Owen, the husband. I guess he is trying not to push Cristina over the edge but he is standing so far back she can still fall off if he's not there to assist. So, not sure about him but I love Kevin McKidd. He's been a great addition to the cast. Cristina: I'm not liking this storyline at all. I don't want her whole and healed. I like that she's struggling and that she left the program. And when she finally comes back, I want it to be a while before we see the badass Cristina we know and love. I can't take these over the top story lines (e.g., the house warming party and the bar). It feels so fake, like the writers are trying to impress upon us that Cristina is traumatized....WE GET IT. MESSAGE CLEAR. Please give us a storyline that isn't so over the top. How about we see Cristina struggling to live outside of her profession? A Cristina that focuses on her husband, her mom and the other things that normal people do that she wanted to avoid but now wants to be a part of. I just can't take anymore "I'm traumatized" storylines for this character. Please spare me. It's not funny, it's not cute, it's just pathetic. Richard: More Richard please. Loved how he came in screaming because he was called in the middle of the night. I'd like to see Richard infused in the current stories.

Whipped by damon

I find it to be quite understandable that Mark and Callie had sex, she's just broken up with someone she was in love with and she sought back something warm and comforting and familiar! Has no one here has inadvisable sex with someone you shouldn't after a break up?

@Matt Richenthal, no i don't, because last week the reviewer commented on how she doesn't like alex's behaviour because she doesn't think broken guys are attractive, and he's a jerk. he's been through hell and back, but that apparently doesn't matter. and several reviews have pointed out that they're sick of seeing cristina struggling. i get that on tv things happen more quickly, but it's good they're treating it like a real problem, because trauma lasts decades. so to define them as simply issues, as in something she can just get over, is kind of stupid. you don't go to rehab for trauma, like demi whatever, it's not something you cure.

Mark and Lexie really really need to get back together, for the sake of all that is good and holy in the world.

Regarding some comments: yes people are saying god why did callie sleep with mark, so wrong it has ruined their friendship. THAT IS THE POINT. Callie is devestated and stuck on AZ. She hates herself so much (girl dancing alone on the tables) that she is trying to push everyone away from her. She thinks she is trying to forget AZ but really she is just in denial about the fact she is going into selfdestructive mode. sleeping with mark is the one thing that could ruin their friendship, then she will really have nobody, which is how she feels. note the look of disgust at herself at the end of the episode. plus callie didnt "mess up". she doesnt have a relationship with az. az is gone for 3 whole years in her eyes. we all know jcap is back, but callie doesnt. so she is just trying to get on with her life without reference to az who apparently doesnt call her and wants to be rid of her. its so sad.
