The Vampire Diaries Review: Doom, Gloom and Personal Growth

at . Comments

Damon Salvatore has a secret, Vampire Diaries viewers, and he just couldn't keep it at the conclusion of "The Descent."

It's not that he loves Elena and it's not that he's saddened by the demise of Rose. It's that he actually yearns to be the exact thing he has spent months claiming to despise: human. I didn't see that admission coming.

Heated, Hot Argument

The 2011 premiere of The Vampire Diaries kicked off and concluded with a major body count: three campers (dead), one shirtless blood sucker (Stefan), one unfortunate female (dead? dying? Damon's new sex slave?)

In between, the plot didn't move forward very much, but plenty of information was passed between characters that planted the seeds for what should be an exciting second half of the season. To wit:

Stefan is pulling a Katherine, trying to build up his tolerance to vervain. Not a bad strategy, but let's remember how close he came to the dark side when he did the same with human blood.

When Rose was not sucking down packets of blood like they were six packs at Charlie Sheen's house, she spent a lot of time selling Elena on the advantages of being human, even saying building a family with a vampire is "not compatible" for her kind. Is this more foreshadowing of a decision Elena will soon have to make?

We've seen countless love triangles before on television, but this has to be the first between a human, werewolf and vampire, right? Then again, with the intel Jules has passed along the Tyler, he may wanna yell at Caroline more than make out with her next week. (It's true.)

That was a very strange dream within which Damon and Rose hung out, wasn't it? It was a touching scene and all, but it seemed to be an example of the show making up a supernatural rule. Since when can Damon control another vampire's subconscious in such a manner?

Can't say I missed Bonnie or Jeremy very much. No offense, guys. But let's all welcome back John Gilbert. Hope your fingers are feeling better, buddy.

Overall, one might criticize the episode for focusing too much on Rose, a character we haven't known for very long. But I see it differently. The extended death scene and the pain she was in as a result of the werewolf bite was necessary in order to depict the stakes that are on the horizon during the impending werewolf/vampire war.

A bite from the former may leave you in the arms of Damon Salvatore, but not in the way most women dream about. It's a grueling way to go, and it's a fate our heroes will stare down over the next few weeks. I can't wait.

I can understand the guys who think Damon has a lot of screen time, compared to other but I did not find him boring! Far from it actually. The character has multiple interesting faces, it's not all black and white people! Personnally, I find that Stefan is boring, except when once again we can see anoter side of him, instead him being all nice and all. Anf for that, I prefer Damon.
Concerning the couple of Elena & Stefan, I also have the impression that, yes they are sweet but kind of boring to. Back to the "tomb talk" but it would have been great to see Stefan in the tomb with Katerine more than one day to really challenge their relationship. But what's done is done^^

@daniella exactly my point. people who hate on damon complain about us damon fans being too blinded by damon love but they're even worse when they're blinded by damon hate. like i don't know what show they've been watching for the past two seasons. this is damon's show! who else show is it? if you don't like it then too bad. it's always the most interesting complex character that people hate on. i don't know why for one second people would say damon is boring. he is no way a boring character. if anything he is what makes this show great. he steals the show every episode and always brings a lot to the table. keep up the good work ian somerhalder!

People who are hating on Damon, need to understand one thing. When he killed Rose, it was because he HAD to. He didnt WANT to. And with the girl at the end, he put all his feelings out for her, and killed her in one instance, because he was breaking all that he had built. He doesn't like to feel. He doesnt want to feel. But last night ep, proved he does. Its a side of Damon rare. I see Damon as damaged goods- Broken to much. I dont know if you missed the line, but he did say. "There's only so much hurt a man can take." And that my friends, is your answer.

If he can't get Elena to love him, then Damon may be content for her to hate him, hence him returning to his 'evil' ways. Either way, he DOES have her attention, which is what he wants...

i don't understand why people are hating on damon. he didn't want to kill rose and that's why a lot of damon fans feel sorry for him. and for those who say damon makes the show boring, what the hell show have you been watching? damon is what makes the show fantastic 99% of the time! get with the times and don't be so blinded by damon hate!

Make the Bad Boy Cry............winner every time. Well done!

I just don't know what to think now. Ok, I still have the opinion that Stefan and Elena is really boring. I don't know, there is just no "click". Damon is going back to the dark side, right? does that mean that he will go back to NOT being friends with Elena? This love/hate relationship has got to start getting somewhere. C'mon!
No Bonnie or Jeremy. I missed Jeremy, I did not miss Bonnie, she's so boring this season, always ploting and stuff.
Oh sweet Caroline.. I love Matt (apparently so do you) and watching the preview of next weeks episode I guess he really IS the right choice. He is a guy, he can take a rejection.. Tyler - not so much.
In the end I was thankful that there were only 30 seconds of the boring couple, and at least we got to see Paul's abbs. as for the rest, Damon stole the show, once again.
Yeah, this is Damon's show, who else?

@Ella, sorry, clarification to what I said: Yes, I heard it in the preview, no it was not in the episode and I noticed the absence as well...

@Ella...yes! I really thought I heard that too...and I remember thinking that there was a line similar to that in Twilight. So I'm not imagining things! And I like that line....

in the preview for last nights ep, didnt rose tell elena...
"its okay to love them both?" did i miss that or did they just put that in the preview and cut it out?????

The Vampire Diaries Season 2 Episode 12 Quotes

He's an Original. I don't really know what that means.

Elena: Don't ruin the moment. You're about to ruin the moment, aren't you?
Stefan: I'm totally ruining the moment.
