Glee Round Table: "Original Song"

at . Comments

Welcome to the latest edition of Glee Round Table. Following a solid episode that featured numerous original songs and one monumental kiss, there's a lot for our panel to break down.

Below, lead Glee critic Matt Richenthal joins esteemed colleagues Steve Marsi and Eric Hochberger to discuss the episode. As always, reader feedback on these topics is encouraged...

What was your favorite quote/scene from the episode?
Matt: It's an obvious answer, but the Blaine/Kurt kiss. As I wrote in my review, it was well-earned, considering how slowly the writers let this relationship play out. Seriously, there was major passion behind that lip lock.

Steve: Was the ending cheesy? Yes. Was it a bit contrived to suddenly hand out a MVP trophy? Of course. Did I cry more than Rachel when she made her speech Ummmm... no comment.

Eric: World War Sue? Come on. My favorite coach didn't have many lines, but she made the most of those she did utter.

What was your favorite original song?
Matt: "Big Ass Heart!" I don't care that it wasn't used in Regionals. It was actually a sweet anthem that only exacerbated my affection for Puck and Lauren.

Steve: "Loser Like Me," no doubt. What a perfect note for the show to conclude on heading into a multi-week hiatus. Those L-shaped foam fingers and fun, appropriate lyrics summed up the series better than any speech from Will ever could.

Eric: I don't know why the group didn't choose Mercedes' "Hell to the No." I'm sick of all the attention on Rachel. Amber Riley has an incredible voice and I'd love to see her featured more.

Will Blaine and Kurt last?
Matt: No. I can easily see how this will play out: Blaine will have to move away for some reason, breaking Kurt's heart but also teaching him a valuable lesson: he really can be loved for who he is. Kurt will then return to William McKinley next season.

Steve: Forever and ever? Let's not pick out our wedding outfits just yet. But the show has worked too hard to get them to this place. No way they break up any time soon.

Eric: With a couple's nickname of "Blurt," I think they can overcome all obstacles.

Kathy Griffin's Sarah Palin-like character was...
Matt: ... Strange. Did Ryan Murphy lose a bet to Griffin? What an out-of-place, unnecessary scene.

Steve: ... A cliche. I'm all for solid satire, but jokes about Obama as a terrorist? That's just old, stale material.

Eric: ... Proof of what I've said for years: a law should be passed that prohibits anyone not named Tina Fey from playing a character remotely resembling Palin.

if blaine and kurt ever break up..i dont think ill ever watch the shoe so glad that they have a openly gay couple on tv that are together and its so sweet..they have to get MARRIED!!!

Whoops, I meant 'Quinn' helped Rachel out in the Britney episode. :P

Sorry Kreeto, I have absolutely no sympathy for Quinn. She had a shallow, superficial many would say bullying relationship with Finn in season 1. She cheated on him with his best friend and got pregnant as a result, the lied to Finn for most of the pregnancy and let him and his Mother believe the baby was his. She was absolutely vicious to Rachel the whole first season (remember the cruel things she used to say to her, she's toned herself down lately but she's still nasty and tells her reguarly she wants to punch her, how many times can you claim Rachel has behaved the same way, try NEVER). Rachel was the only decent member of NDs telling Finn the truth, whether that hurt Quinn or not is not the point, she should have told him herself and not lied to him to begin with. Rachel telling her that Finn left Quinn for her was not being mean, it was being truthful. Yeah Rachel helped her out a couple of times (Britney episode etc. but she's still not a friend) Quinn is in so much freakin' denial it's laughable. She doesn't care for Finn, she just wants to be prom queen. No-one caused Sam to dump Quinn but Quinn/Finn with their messing around behind his back. Rachel is a lot of things but she hasn't done anything to warrant Quinn's bile aimed at her, which she has been doing since the pilot episode (being nice to her 3 episodes out of 2 seasons doesn't make her a friend of Rachels). The way I see it Rachel only has 5 good friends in NDs/Warblers, Mercedes, Puck, Kurt, Blaine and Lauren (they're the only ones these days who aren't still nasty to her, I would add Mike but as he rarely says anything I don't think he counts) the other NDs still treat her badly and insult her reguarly (the only time Rachel has really been a bitch is when she laid into Santana, and that was SO deserved as she'd put up with that girl for ages with no retaliation). Rachel is not without flaw but I get sick of people being down on her, she's self-obsorbed but she's not nasty (whenever ANYone needs a friend she's there for them, unlike others).

It's kind of ironic that I really hate Rachel but I am a fan of Glee. Rachel practically offended Quinn, saying that Finn chose her over Quinn. But just because Quinn replied something mean to her, now she's playing the victim. Rachel has got to remember how cool Quinn had been with her dating Finn all this while, especially when Rachel was the one who told Finn that the baby wasn't his, causing Finn to leave Quinn. Also, Quinn did help to remove Rachel's doubt over Finn's loyalty to her (in Britney's tribute episode) which was totally something horrible for Quinn to do, but she did it anyway. And Quinn never interfered with Rachel-Finn relationship while the two were dating. And now when Quinn is dating Finn, Rachel is meddling around and playing the victim. She's so annoying. Oh, well I probably love Quinn too much. =) Also, just seconds ago Finn was flirting with Quinn, eventually causing Sam to dump her. And suddenly now Finn is really concerned not wanting to hurt Rachel by being with Quinn?

I totally agree with STEVEN when sais that Blaine and Kurt will no break up any time soon, because it is true that the writers made that kiss work out, so I don't think they'll break up, they are totally cool together

Hold up! Best Kurt/Blaine moniker: Kurt Coblaine. End of discussion.

klaine is toxic and awful
kum needs to happen immediately.

Team Blurt! (hate the nickname 'Klaine', Blurt is easier on the ears)

Yeah Rachel absolutely made this episode for me. Lea Michele turned what could have been horribly soppy/overwrought moments (and songs), especially that last speech, into some truly touching moments. Get it Right, Only Child, and Rachel's bedazzled microphone were other high points of this episode.

Gaby ee

1) The Klaine kiss!
2) Loser like me. The song really sums up everything the glee club is supposed to be about.
3) Yes! Both really deserve to be together and their relationship was built so slowly that it just seems they have earned the right to be together.
4) I didn't really care about it. Yes, it was defintely a bit unnecessary but I didn't mind to have it in the episode either.

How damaged does a guy have to be to be into some as annoying as Rachel?

Sometimes I don't feel like we're The Warblers. I feel like we're Blaine and the Pips.
