Gossip Girl Review: A Dair Affair

at . Comments

Now that's what I'm talking about.

This was one heck of an episode of Gossip Girl, with tension slowly built throughout the winter boiling over on all fronts, and leaving us with even more intrigue as we head into a mid-mid-season hiatus. "Empire of the Son" lived up to the hype.

The real reason for Russell's vendetta against Chuck was revealed (in the opening "previously on Gossip Girl" montage, and then later). Lily finally prepared to face the music. Rufus remembered he's on the show. Ben was vindicated.

And, lastly, there was the kiss heard 'round the Upper East Side and Brooklyn.

Dair Moment

You could sense a Dair kiss was coming whether you're a Gossip Girl spoiler junkie or not. From the opening moments, Blair was still stalking Chuck but is in a really good mood.

Blair does not walk around in good moods, people.

Meanwhile, Serena got a call from Vanessa for some reason, but is confused and upset that Ben is blowing her off. Nate? He's being Nate, and exploring his feelings for Raina.

Chuck learns about Nate and Raina from Russell, who also hints (so subtly, with that orange outfit) that he knows Lily's secret. Lily and Chuck try to find out what he knows.

Try as they might to do their thing, which they don't really understand or want to admit, Blair and Dan are handcuffed by sneaking around. It's Dorota who catches her on it.

Soon we learn that Ben has been ignoring Serena because his mom is in town, while Lily thinks Ben revealed the secret (Vanessa hinted this) and that's how Russell knows.

The affidavit is also missing from Serena’s drawer. There's no mention of Eric or Damien, both MIA this week, and their role in outing Lily. It all leads up to Chuck's big party.

After Serena accuses Ben of outing her mom, she learns that it was Ben's mother who rifled through her stuff and gave the affidavit to Thorpe so that he can clear his name.

Russell tells Chuck to hand over Bass Industries or else. Raina was hiding and overhears, devastated that her father, her idol, would resort to such an underhanded tactic.

Lily is ready to turn herself in. But there's more to it than that.

A Lily and Serena Photo

The major secret revealed last night was a bit odd, as it was a reference to a blink-and-you-miss-it Season 2 scandal, but it did help explain Russell's hatred of Chuck a little.

Russell Thorpe reveals that his wife died because of Bart and that’s why he’s seeking revenge. This would have been more shocking had it not been given away earlier, but still.

Serena's father, William, returns and tells Rufus they're going to form a united front. Rufus is just excited to form any sort of dialogue at this point. Stay tuned on this front.

Rufus' other contribution last night, along with Dorota, was to convince Dan and Blair to stop fighting it. Why the plausible deniability? Why not embrace their true feelings?

Embrace them they did, as Dan made the first move - refusing to back away - and insisting that they kiss, just once, to ensure their relationship wasn't more than platonic.

We have a feeling it's a lot more than platonic.

"For crying out loud, Humphrey!" Blair said, before kissing Dan as the screen froze and the credits rolled. She surely spoke for many fans across the country ... but what next?

The Dair cliffhanger was vintage Gossip Girl, leaving us wondering whether Chuck and Serena will bust them, where Louis the Prince fits into this love rectangle, and more.

Here's our first look at where things pick up April 18 ...

Terrific stuff last night, and plenty to keep us guessing as we suffer through another long break. A handful of final thoughts before we turn it over to your comments ...

  • Apologies to those who like him with Serena, but does anybody else think Ben and Vanessa would make an awesome, irrelevant couple? Anyone?
  • This was not a good night to be Chuck. Not only did Russell throw him for a loop, TWO exes are in the arms of friends. Well, one friend and Dan.
  • Nate's streak of being involved with every girl is legendary.
  • Who do you think will find out about Dan and Blair first?

What did you think of last night's Gossip Girl? Discuss!

Dare I say the Dan and Blair writer should be kept on whatever it takes. April 18th can't get here any faster. Who's the blonde VDW cousin for by the way? Chuck?

What a way to end the episode. Now I’ll be imagining all kinds of scenarios until it starts in the UK again. What could happen? Chuck and Serena walking in on Blair and Dan kissing? Or them realising that they have a burning passion for each other and perhaps even not. As much as I like Dan and Blair together, I think I’d prefer if they stay good friends and everyone knows about it. None of this backstabbing and scheming against each other. More than likely Chuck and Blair will rule again, but don’t ruin Blair and Dan’s friendship. ps. Love Blair Waldorf/Leighton Meester and love Chuck Bass/Ed Westwick

oh my word people! who is crazy enough to like dan and blair together!!!!! CHUCK AND BLAIR belong together!!!!!!!! ya their relationship has been tough but as if relationships are always perfect. they will figure it out, thats what you do. They better be together in the end. i honestly believe that they will be..they are so cute together and chuck is himself. and they are exciting. dan and blair=BORRRINGGG!!

@mike the song was don't wait by dashboard confessionals

Ok, I'm being dense... but I completely missed what the huge secret was. Yes, I know it was the revelation that Bart had something to do with the death of Russell's wife... but how has this been brewing over seasons? I'm kinda sketching over what happened in Season 2, so could someone please explain?

I do not think Dan and Blair are doing anything wrong. They have both been ignored by their respective love partners and needed to find solace (and I don't even mean sexual) in someone else. Dan was there for her when not even Serena was, as the blonde was too busy with Ben and therefore also ignored Dan. Chuck was busy falling in love in a scary little amount of time with another girl (Really? After all he made Blair go through in S2, he falls in love in, like, three episodes). Chair was a fantastic couple. I loved them. But as they progressed I started to realize more and more that though Blair was good for Chuck, he is not the right one for her. She gets emotionally exhausted with him because she apparently existed in that relationship to help pick up the Chuck pieces. I always believed that Dair would make a good couple because it is the pair that would challenge each other more. How could Queen B fall for disgusting little lonely boy? How could Dan ever feel anything but disdain towards the "label-whoring package of girly evil"? What would everyone else say? It would not just be a battle against the world, it would be a battle within themselves to admit what they feel for each other, and that's what makes them so fascinating (it was what made Chair interesting too, actually). I'm all for Dair now. Their bickering is hilarious, I think they look pretty cute together (note: not sexy, cute!) and their brutal honesty with each other is refreshing. And since truly believe they bring out the best in each other, and I'm an aspiring writer...I think they should be endgame for real.

I liked Ben...But for Serena there's always plenty of fish in the sea! lol As Blair and Dan...SERIOUSLY?? Don't like the couple...Will always love Blair and Chuck chemistry together...I fell in love with those too since the very beginning!! And Dan and Rufus characters are so boring...They're just there because...Oh well,I'll keep watching! lol

I hate dan and Blair ... i cant believe this that writers are just forcing two characters like this..... I hate dan and Blair ... and for the love of god why does chuck keep on doing anf falling for every girl ...

I think what would happen is that there would be less DAIR in the remaining episodes, so that they would be given a chance to test how they really feel about each other. also Dan and Blair should be the END game. so lets give the chair fans what they want just for now hahaha

@Ace: Beatifully said, I totally agree! I don't really care who will be endgame, because I LOVED Derena and Chair. But for now, they shouldn't be together. Not after everything that has happened. Plus, Dair also is a fascinating combination and at this point in the story Dair makes a lot more sense!
If, at some point, the writers find a good way to break up Dair (assuming they actually let them begin a relationship) and then bring Dan and Blair back together with their former partners, I will be okay with it. But only if its done right!
As of right now I'm all for Dair. I don't get why everybody seems to be so at war anyway. I love ALL the combinations and think the built up and development of each relationship was/is done great and thats the most important thing!
So everybody just enjoy the show and stop fighting over who will be endgame. Hopefully that is still over 2 years away ;) And btw: I have a feeling, that Chuck's sudden wish to find Blair at the end of last episode will make quite an impact on her. She is still pretty hung up on him, so it will be interesting to see how his rediscovered feelings will affect her and how it all plays out...
