The Vampire Diaries Season Finale Review: The Choices We Make...

at . Comments

It was all about choice on the season finale of The Vampire Diaries.

While Damon's fate was never really a question this week - yes, this show kills off more characters than any other on TV, but the odds of Damon dying are lower than Lindsay Lohan turning down a drink - we were left to wonder just how the brooding, sarcastic Salvatore would be saved.

And the answer was an exchange I never saw coming, just one of many choices that highlighted "As I Lay Dying." Let's review them all, along with their consequences...

Damon and Elena Photo

Stefan trades a sibling for a soul. Might as well start with the biggest of them all, right? The series gave us a glimpse into Stefan's dark past on "The Dinner Party," but I never dreamed we'd see that side to him again. Remember his conversation with Elena on that episode?

Elena: He described you as a monster.
Stefan: That's what I was.

And that's what he now is again. It was shocking to see Paul Wesley with blood tricking down his mouth this week, a sight only made more disturbing by the faint smile on Stefan's lips as he embraced the beast that had been bottled up for so long.

A noble act to save his brother? Perhaps. But Katherine pointed out the other side to that seemingly benevolent coin upon delivering the cure to Damon: didn't Stefan also abandon Elena by doing so? And how many innocent lives, starting with that girl Klaus served up, will now die as a result of Stefan's decision?

No matter how much you love Damon, you have to wonder: is his life really worth all that?

Damon chooses to accept his fate. Oh, the cruel irony. Just as Stefan was paying the ultimate price for what he deemed to be his ultimate mistake - turning his brother - Damon was realizing that he has no one to blame but himself for the events in 1864.

He was manipulated by Katherine back then, he made the decision to love her anyway and it was that triangle which sealed his and Stefan's future. An amazing job, as always, by Ian Somerhalder, bringing every painful emotion to the forefront as Damon lay dying.

Elena plants one on Damon. Because he was literally on his death bed? Out of pity? True feelings? Only she knows for sure. Actually, she probably doesn't.

Bonnie decides to save Jeremy. My biggest problem with the show is how it has occasionally used Bonnie's powers as a crutch. There seems to be a spell for every scenario, as we witnessed last week when she suddenly discovered a way to save Elena.

But, wow, it's hard to complain too much when the spell results in such a What-the-Hell-just-happened-and-what-could-it-possibly-mean development as we saw to conclude this finale. Jeremy sees dead people?!? Are Anna and Vicki actually alive again? Are they merely visions? Will they be joined by others?

Caroline's mother accepts her daughter, fangs and all. A nice family moment here, and one that also leaves the door open to storylines on season three. Will Liz now use the power of her position to defend the supernatural beings in Mystic Falls?

A few more observations from an incredible final episode:

  • Jeremy has now died twice. Might he eventually be revealed as a cat? Seven more lives to go, buddy.
  • You've gotta love the spirit in Mystic Falls. The only busier people than the vampires in this town must be the costume shop owners.
  • RIP, Elijah. Probably. We think. As we've seen, it takes A LOT to kill this guy.
  • Will Alaric adopt Elena and Jeremy? There was definitely a fatherly vibe to the way he cared for the latter.

So, the only piece of good news following such a riveting finale? We have plenty of time to discuss it before a new episode airs. Do so now in the Comments section and/or our Vampire Diaries forum!

Yes Kat wasnt invited but i dont think Elena is not a fully normal human being anymore.

So many epic moments in the season finale! klaus killing elija (Again!) totally knew that would happen! when klaus healed katherine with his blood, did he also make her a werewolf?? will damon have that same problem? thank you for not killing of jeremy - i love his character at the moment! also the fact that he's seeing dead people is quite interesting...can't wait to see how that develops. Evil stefan is also very interesting turn of events, although elena will not want to be with an evil stefan so YAY for DELENA. btw, the delena kiss was so sweet, i almost cried here when i thought there might be no hope because kat wouldn't come back until she did!!! wow kat came back! the caroline/liz moment was also a nice surprise, i wonder if the sherif will lose her job or try to protect caroline now? jeremy/bonnie - i love them so much, hope to see more scenes soon. Please say next season has another tyler/caroline kiss, it's been ages!!! :) they are certainly better than matt/caroline. also, i think alaric should move in with elena/jeremy because i like their house, but maybe they should all move into the salvatores home now that elena owns it. klaus is so creepy it's not funny. i wonder who will survive mystic falls next season. also, it's nice to move away from mystic falls, i look forward to seeing klaus & stefan's bad vamp reputation but also the many thrilling surprises that await. fabulous episode as usual. p.s jeremy as a cat lmao! i hope not, but i hope he does survive a bit longer!

I think Katherine, after seeing Elena kissing Damon, got jealous. it would b amazing to see Katherine fight for Damon :)) And poor Stephan, hopefully he will be okay.

The only thing I really don't understand - how did Katherine get in the house, if she wasn't invited?!

Katherine confuses the h*ll out of me. Does she love Damon or not? If she does why did she lie to him? She's so manipulative it's hard to trust a word out of her mouth. The Damon & Elena smooch made my day, month and year! At the start of the season Elena was saying she hated Damon, and it ends with him saying he loves her. So great. Am I alone in hating the I see dead people twist with Jeremy? It was so lame. It's going to stir up a s**tload of drama for Bonnie and Jeremy next year though.

The season finale rocked!!! It even managed to surpass last year's amazing finale. Seeing Damon confront death and apologize to Elena for all the mistakes he's made broke my heart. He's found his humanity and will hopefully become a man Elena can be in love with one day. I'm a devoted Delena fan and I am dying to see them become a couple! Now that Elena's starting to realize how much she cares about Damon a romance between them might happen sooner than later. Peace Stelena fans! I respect you, and we all love TVD we just have a difference of opinion. I say this because it can get pretty nasty at times between the Delena and Stelena fans. And I feel it's unnecessary on both sides.

The episode was dull. I was really disappointed.

While Damon is not the best brother in the world he does love Stefan. He has saved Stefan's life several times in the past 2 seasons. In the the Sun also rises he put his fist though the wall because Stefan was going to try to sacrifice himself. Whats sad about this episode is Damon accepts his death, he doesn't want Stefan to sacrifice anything in order to save him. But Stefan does because he cant live without his brother anymore then Damon can. While Stefan is off being a ripper, i see Damon and Elena getting closer but i don't think Damon will pursue her romantically, When Stefan was in the tomb Damon didn't try anything but protect her. Damon and Elena will work together to get Stefan back.

First off, I strongly believe this episode didn't not live up after such a terrific one last week.
Stefan giving up everything he worked so hard to keep in check for his brother , who would probably not do the extreme lengths for him if the situation was vice-versa. It was sad to watch him descend to that monster but also thrilling. I just wonder what will happen next.
Damon obviously wasn't going to die even though that would have been a shock. Personally his craziness did not affect me as much as Rose's did probably because I knew he would live and it just seemed like a wasted storyline. AND I feel that Elena instantly forgiving Damon was unrealistic. He was the reason her brother, the only family she had left, would have been dead if it wasn't for Bonnie.
Speaking of Bonnie, all she is useful for is performing spells to save people. It's getting old. I would have rather had her be killed off the show or do something else.
Caroline and her mom was a sweet moment in the show. I just wonder if the Sheriff will be helping the vampires now...?
Alaric is awesome. Enough said.
And then my favorite moment of the finale would be Jeremy and his new interesting developement. I can't wait to see what that is all about. I have been saying all season that Anna would be back whether in a flashback or not (probably because I was pissed off about her sudden demise, and that I simply adore her character and the relationship with Jer which is my favorite reltionship of the show. SO i might be biased here) but none the less that was pretty wicked. Don't care much for Vicki but none the less exited to see how this plays out. :)
