Castle Review: Paper Dolls Are Not Just Toys...

at . Comments

A recent TV Fanatic interview with Stana Katic told us viewers that this episode was not one to be missed. The actress wasn’t lying. At all.

The latest hour of Castle dealt with a sniper on the loose, which affected Kate in all the wrong ways. It’s okay, you can sit back off the edge of your seat now. Let’s take a breath and discuss "Kill Shot."

Gates and Beckett

Losing Control. Beckett was beyond her element in this case, feeling out of control for pretty much the first time. Her PTSD came back in full force as soon as the case came about. I have raved over several occasions that Katic is an amazing actress. This episode only solidified that belief. Katic showed such pure raw emotion throughout the hour that this has to be submitted for her Emmy nomination reel.

Earlier in the season, I was surprised when Kate seemed pretty much back to herself after returning to work. But this hour explained it. Sometimes we bury those things because we can’t deal. In this installment, Beckett had no choice but to deal. Great work by the entire Castle team. The flashbacks, the memories; Kate’s trauma felt so real.

Esposito Is Pretty Much The Man. Throughout this season, Esposito has been working his way to earn more screen time and, boy, does he deserve it. He was the one to help Kate throughout the hour, pushing her to move forward and protecting her while doing so. Plus, he took out the sniper as he held a gun to our precious Beckett. See? Espo is the man.

The dynamic between these two is flawless. They are both serious cops who know how to handle each other in the best way possible. The scene in the evidence room with the gun that shot Kate was perfect.

Things Are Getting Better! Even though Gates is still not a huge fan of our favorite author, she is making progress in working with him. There were a few instances throughout the episode when she asked Castle directly for answers, proving what Beckett told her: Castle is an asset. The two stood at the board together discussing the case, she depended on him with the paper dolls (which was one of the coolest identifiers for a case, ever)... it looks like Ms. Iron Gates is not as tough as rumored to be.

Caskett Is On! Sort of. Kate took the step she needed to in order to move forward. She has already admitted to her therapist that she knows Castle’s feelings and she remembers her shooting. Admitting that her issues run deeper than the PTSD and back to her mom, she made the choice that it's time to begin moving again, to be more of a person; AKA get herself better so she can move forward with Castle!!!

She said before that she can’t be with Castle or anyone because she’s not ready for that. Girl is making steps to get herself ready and that's all us Caskett shippers can hope for!

Side Notes...

  • We got glimpses of Beckett’s scar tonight, including a scene in her bra. I know this was a scene that all you male viewers were loving!
  • How amazing was Beckett hiding in her apartment after drinking? Rocked it!
  • Lanie and Esposito worked together in a handful of scenes throughout the hour. Did anyone else notice it seemed like nothing ever happened?
  • Less screen time for Ryan and more for Espo.
I really have no complaints about "Kill Shot." This was an episode with just the right amount of twists and turns, emotional baggage and shipper moments. What did you think, TV Fanatics?

Awesome episode. Stana Katic blew me away. It was her best performance to date bar none.

This was a love/hate episode for me. It was billed as being heavy on the Caskett scenes, so I was very disappointed that they spent the majority of the episode apart , as Castle gave Beckett the 'space' she needed to heal. I'm not saying it wasn't a good episode, Stana Katic knocked it out of the park. She was superb, showing a woman who usually is always in control, spiraling, as she tried to deal with fears that she hadn't realized still haunted her so deeply. If they had told me this was going to be an ep centered on her, I would have given it a 10 out of 10, but they billed it as having this big revealing moment between Rick and Kate. In the end, the revelation came to Kate, while she was with her shrink, taking away some of the impact. 8 out of 10 . I was really amazed by Esposito in this episode, he stepped up as the 'big brother' that Beckett needed. I loved him in this one.

The Best Show Ever! I can't stand COPS and Murder Mystery shows but this is not your typical blood n guts, Romantic/Comedy/Drama. This is more than that! I am ever so impressed with the acting, chemistry ALL the characters have with one another and the pureness of the show as well as the excellent writing! I love that Espisito is getting more exposure. Would love to hear him sing in a fututre episode! Hint Hint, yes I read your BIOS. Espisito was the perfect person to give support to Beckett for this situation. Beckett needed to realize she is NOT the ONLY one that feels what she is going thru and we know she respects Espisito and I think this episode brings forth a new comradery. It was beautiful to see that all the actors can have meaningful relationships with one another and not be "pigeon holed" to what we are accustomed to seeing in "other" shows. Ryan...I would love to see more of Mr. and Mrs. Ryan soon! They are an awesome couple on screen and off! (Met them at Comicon San Diego!) You both are SOOOOoo perfect for each other. Maybe Castle and Beckett can learn about expressing their love for one another by their example! If I had one request, stop calling the Cpt. "Sir"...why? why? why? was that written in for what purpose? The only female I recall ever being called "Sir" was Peppermint Patty! Love, Sandy ~ Castleholic, Always

Each episode is unique and one better than the next

Yeah I thought she had a pericardial effusion which involves open heart surgery but they did stick a hand inside her chest from the side so that would leave a significant scar which would be easily viewable when wearing a bra.
Obviously not a shipper ep.
Kate taking a big step is to start getting therapy about Mom. You don't really want to start dating anyone who's in therapy for Mommy issues. So I don't expect them to start anything soon. I'm actually expecting Kate to meet another guy for a brief while.
My original review was on the spot I don't see how any of this can help to bring Caskett together. While Ricks happy to sit back and wait and wait and ..... wait some more..And Kate's happy to push the whole world away...I mean seriously you don't date a babe who's on def-con 1 and entirely defensive anyway... Well the worlds passing them by. I want them to be together but the way they are writing this is, to me, most unsatisfactory.
That being said last night acting was in a word....Superb..

I think they wrote Esposito in for a reason, this wasn't a shipper episode (even if they all are shipper episodes). They wanted to show how she is still damaged by the shot and also, she is damaged for too many things. I think this episode shows them all, she being hurt by her mother's murder, her own shot, her apparently unpenetrable wall inside that doesn't let her to be happy - with Castle - and so many things she didn't know she felt or didn't want to admit but were there. This was the totally necessary step for heal. And as Peg said above, Castle knew that the best way for him to help her was being there, but letting her walk away from that alone, giving her the space she needed to learn how to make things right for her life, that eventually will become their life together. So what I'm trying to say here is that the help that Esposito gave her, was the kind of help that Castle couldn't provide her. He taught her to walk away from there, with his own experience because he had already been where she was standing; but Castle hadn't, and that's something beautiful to look over because she'll know that Castle's personality is not the kind of ones that doesn't let anyone but himselfs to help the person they love. She'll know that her team isn't just a regular team, they are people that love her and care about her, and want to make her feel better and be alive so they help each other, to provide her segurity and keep her safe. Also Gates, because you saw how she worked side by side with Castle (even if we know she doesn't like him) and that's something that probably won't happen under other circumstances. And you know what's the most beautiful of all of this? That Kate now has a reason to stay alive, and enjoy all those gifts she wasn't able to enjoy because of the closure she was looking for. Now she have a very big important motive to bring down that wall and be the person she is and wants to be. For her, and for everybody that loves her.

Coffee stuff was cool, she owes him about 100 cups...always...been there for shows real devotion to step back a let someone else help the one you love to let them fight their internal battle for themselves.
Always. What a bond they all have for one is true friendship to watch your friend fall and not call them on it or treat her like she is broken.
Always. Espo is the man. That is so right. He is a friend, a comrad in arms, and a hell of a shot.
Always. Is...How long I will love this show.

Great episode. I think this show just gets better and better . They have gradually developed each character. Every episode is enjoyable. Loved watching Beckett come to grips with her shooting. CAn't wait to see this storyline continued. One thing I can say about this show's creator. They don.t have continuity issues and the characters stay true to form.
The writing is just good all around and the cast just makes it better.

First off, I absolutely love this series! It's about time a network came up with something of substance rather than other reality crap show. Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic together are a pure joy to watch. I love the chemistry between them, they really bring a comedic, romantic twist to the show. The slow building of the relationship is what's making this series so great. It's not the usual...male/female work together jump into the sack. They are building a friendship with a romantic undertone and slowly becoming essentials in each other's lives - Castle with her job, Kate with is family. It's really a well written show that I hope will be around for a very loooooong time.

This show is the best love it and last night was exceptional.
