The Vampire Diaries Round Table: "Homecoming"

at . Comments

Homecoming was anything but a celebratory occasion on The Vampire Diaries this week, as a villain fell, a brother was freed and many corpses were stolen.

What did our Round Table panelists think of the 2011 finale? Matt Richenthal, Steve Marsi, Eric Hochberger and Dan Forcella chime in below. Reader feedback, as always, is encouraged...

What was your favorite scene from the episode?

Matt: I'll be very specific: when Mikael pulled in that Hybrid to prove he can compel members of Klaus' army. It was just the latest shift in an episode full of twists, turns and tense moments. Mikael and Klaus were akin to offensive and defensive coordinators trying to out-strategize one another. In the end, the former got sacked.

Steve: Klaus and Mikael squaring off in the doorway. Edge-of-your-seat stuff right there. Besides Eric's obligatory "any scene with Caroline" response, is there be any other choice for this question?

Dan: Steve's right. There's no other choice for this question. The climax of that showdown between Klaus and Mikael was magical. Tell me you had any idea how that was going to go down.

Eric: Haha, thanks to Steve I don't even even need to make my obligatory Caroline reference here. And for that, much like Dan, I can rip off his scene choice. Not that we had any other option.

Was Mikael killed off too soon?

Matt: I don't think so. We were treated to the great exchange everyone referred to above, providing even more layers to Klaus and, let's face it, this show can only juggle so many characters at once. We only see Alaric once every four weeks as is.

Steve: Yes. I like that the show actually provides resolution to story arcs and has the guts to kill off characters rather than dragging things out endlessly for the sake of it, but Sebastian Roche was great and I feel like there was more material there.

Dan: No. I don't think so. At times it seemed like TVD got into a habit of just bringing out a bigger and bigger bad guy as the weeks and seasons went on, so bringing out a new big bad and killing him off so quickly was a bit refreshing. Klaus should remain the main target for a while because he's that awesome.

Eric: I actually think so. I do agree that we have enough bad guy in Klaus, but I can't help but feel like Mikael was a waste of good talent. Maybe we could have saved the Vampire Vampire Hunter for later in the season...

More surprising: when we learned Katherine had been posing as Elena, the abduction of the Originals or the fact that no male high school student asked Rebekah to the dance?

Matt: Rebekah all the way. She's been practicing all these cheerleader moves in front of the football team for weeks, right? Where's the cocky quarterback who has taken notice of this new girl and wants to diagram a play in her end zone... if you know what I mean? Come on.

Steve: Rebekah is new in town, mysterious, intimidating and almost unattainably hot for the general population, so I can kinda see that. Katherine as Elena ... it's hard to be thrown for a loop by something that's been done almost too often at this point. Which leaves us their abduction of the Originals by default. I definitely didn't see that coming and it set up a great arc for the spring. You would think Stef and Kat would refrain from poking the vampirical bear that is Klaus after all they've been through, but revenge is a powerful motive.

Dan: Yeah, we've seen the Katherine thing before and no normal high school student would have the courage to ask out the incredible Rebekah, so I will go with the Original abduction. Way to go, Stef!

Eric: While I admit I definitely was shocked by the classic Katherine swap (I mean, it's been awhile!), I have to give it to Rebekah not finding a date! Look, clearly I was never a jock in high school, but I've watched enough television to know the cheerleaders always go out with the football players. There's no way they didn't see her at cheerleading practice wearing those short shorts and ask her out on the spot. Right? Support me here Mr. Athlete, Matt.

Could you beat Klaus at beer pong?

Matt: Probably not. But Never Have I Ever?!? I'd have him wasted in 30 seconds. Never Have I Ever... lied about yanking my mother's heart through her chest? DRINK!

Steve: Does Eric worship the ground Candice Accola walks on? No offense to your boy, Dan, but I am the man at beer pong. He'd get schooled unless he compelled me to lose, but that would just be pathetic on his part.

Dan: No. Neither can Steve. Nobody can.  ou can't beat Klaus at anything. You can't even get your murder plan correct against him. He is the absolute man!

Eric: God no. Did you see how badly he was stomping that other team? It was like one cup to seven at that point. I'm much more interested in challenging him for a little 2-on-2 guy/girl teams. His ego would probably pick the most useless supernatural on his side, Elena. I got dibs on Bon-Bon. Sorry, Caroline, but I'm taking a witch in case I need her vampire migraines in the clutch.

Name one thing you hope to see happen on The Vampire Diaries in 2012.

Matt: How about one thing I hope NOT to see? Katherine. She really has to go.

Steve: Two words: For. Wood.

Dan: I hope to see no dead people return to Mystic Falls.

Eric: Steve! Stop stealing my Caroline answers! You make me come up with real answers here. As much as I love Klaus and Rebekah bonding with the gang, I want to see some serious Good V. Bad in 2012. Let the real evil come out. And more Forwood.

The Katherine switch up was fairly obvious... you could tell when Elena suddenly appeared in two different places at once in different outfits... It's not that it's been done to often it's that they made it very obvious... stealing the coffins was fairly obvious when Stefan called Klaus... I think the biggest surprise was Katherine saving Damon's life... maybe there is a heart under that ice exterior. Anyway in 2012 I want more DELENA ACTION... with Stefan away on an anti-Klaus regime and Katherine clearly back on the run, it's time for Delena.

Okay even I could've beat Klaus at Beiruit. He barely had to throw the ball, the opposing cups were so damn close!!!! And then he would snap my neck, rip my heart out, or some other typical Klaus reaction.

i think that Damon and Elena's growing bond is the most exciting thing this show is offering along with Stefan's new "self" that i have come to love hehe...Damon and Elena used to be my opinion, when one of them was in love with the other from the beginning and that is Damon, no true friendship can exist....cause feelings are complicated! Elena is surely overwhelmed by conflicting feelings for Damon, because the only thing keeping her from him so far is the fact that he's Stefan's brother....but...hopefully she will give in to her emotions soon......that's the EPIC THING!

1. klaus crying. that guy really has showed some of his humanity-and as we've learned from Damon, we just cant resist awesome bad vampire going kinda-good on TVD.
2. nope. even the vampire diaries can't handle that many characters. with him gone, we'll just have more time for forwood.
3. what about elena stabbing Rebekah right in the back? defenitly didn't see that one coming. i just really hope that they are gonna wake her up soon, coz I started to love her.
4. Damon&bigbadvampirefather were united against Klaus and they didn't succeeded... who am I to even think about having a chance in beating Klaus at anything?
5. forwood. and elena to become BFF with original barbie (yes i know she is death. but this is TVD. she will be jumping around in her shorts next week. the problem is that she may not be extra happy with elena being the one who killed her). and delena kiss. and some HOT original brothers. AND MATT GONE. seriously, why is he still alive?

1) best scene was a tie between the showdown and the last Delena scene. One has an immediate impact, the other long term. 2) I don't know is he was killed to soon. I just met him, I was intrigued but not yet in love with the character. I wish they had atleast layed more groundwork for him. It makes me not care as much about the originals. Especially when they stake poor Rebekah so early. There is a character I want back stat. 3) Only because of the frantic pace of the episode and the length of time since we last saw her, Katherine posing as Elena. I admit she is a plot device (so is Bonnie/Jeremy/Matt etc) but since Elena is just now getting interesting, she is the badazz chica I need. BTW I would have liked more review and less drooling over Rebekah. Oh and Im getting sick of the Caroline/Forwood talk. I love her and them but Its making me sick, especially when they are not the main characters/couple. 4) really??? 5) Headlining what I wanna see is Delena, obviously I'm not alone. I feel they have progressed steadily and tremendously. She is no longer trying to change him, she is more accepting of him and that will only increase. She looks at him like she is starving and vice versa. Since Stefan couldn't be bothered to even see Elena befoe he left, there is nothing stopping them. If she was truly in love with her first, she would never get with another. You know what they say, if your unsure of who to choose pick the second option because you wouldn't have fallen for them if your first was meant to be. Second, I want continued Elena maturity. Last, Id like to see the REAL Stefan stand up. He is awesome when he doesn't hold back and he's himself, I believe he will continue and will distance himself from Elena. He needs a strong female vamp like Becca or Katherine to balance him. Oh and bring Rebecca back damn it :)

i love damon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1) Definitely a face-off between Mikael and Klaus. Joseph Morgan was great in those minutes and the entire scene was just so intense. 2) I think he was. Klaus is enough for a bad guy but I thought there was something so interesting and different about Mikael. They could've done more with him being their father and a vampire hunter and I honestly would've like to see more of him. 3) Rebekah not finding a date seems impossible. She can flip and cheer better than Caroline! But in all seriousness, I was more shocked with the abduction of the Originals. 4) Haha. Not a chance. 5) 2012? Give me Delena! Now that Elena's agreed she needs to let Stefan go, I think that's the green light for her and Damon to get together.

Can I get some Delena in 2012?!! I'm all for building up supercouples and its definitely their time. Almost everyone wants it and as a Stegan fan first, he is better without her or with a Kat or Becca type. Like Forwood and Elijah also.....can not wait.

@Blu: Damon and Elena friends? Lol. Since when do you wanna f*ck your friend? She gives him eyes only a lover would and never gave looks like that to Stefan. When do you touch your "friend" like they constantly do, its only going to get more intimate. I'm not a shipper but calling "delena" good friends is awfully inappropriate lol. Those two make cooking look x rated

1- Caroline not being able to accept the fact that Tyler can throw a better party than 2- Yes he was killed off too soon, why build him up like this only to just Kill him that easily???pointless to me 3-the abduction of the Originals 4- Deff not 5- More of Stefan in control, Ric and the crew figuring out the next weapon to kill Klaus, of course not too soon. Bon Bon with a new love interest, someone fresh and not recycled...
