The Vampire Diaries Round Table: "Homecoming"

by at . Comments

Homecoming was anything but a celebratory occasion on The Vampire Diaries this week, as a villain fell, a brother was freed and many corpses were stolen.

What did our Round Table panelists think of the 2011 finale? Matt Richenthal, Steve Marsi, Eric Hochberger and Dan Forcella chime in below. Reader feedback, as always, is encouraged...

-------------------------------------------

What was your favorite scene from the episode?

Matt: I'll be very specific: when Mikael pulled in that Hybrid to prove he can compel members of Klaus' army. It was just the latest shift in an episode full of twists, turns and tense moments. Mikael and Klaus were akin to offensive and defensive coordinators trying to out-strategize one another. In the end, the former got sacked.

Steve: Klaus and Mikael squaring off in the doorway. Edge-of-your-seat stuff right there. Besides Eric's obligatory "any scene with Caroline" response, is there be any other choice for this question?

Dan: Steve's right. There's no other choice for this question. The climax of that showdown between Klaus and Mikael was magical. Tell me you had any idea how that was going to go down.

Eric: Haha, thanks to Steve I don't even even need to make my obligatory Caroline reference here. And for that, much like Dan, I can rip off his scene choice. Not that we had any other option.

Vampire Diaries Round Table

Was Mikael killed off too soon?

Matt: I don't think so. We were treated to the great exchange everyone referred to above, providing even more layers to Klaus and, let's face it, this show can only juggle so many characters at once. We only see Alaric once every four weeks as is.

Steve: Yes. I like that the show actually provides resolution to story arcs and has the guts to kill off characters rather than dragging things out endlessly for the sake of it, but Sebastian Roche was great and I feel like there was more material there.

Dan: No. I don't think so. At times it seemed like TVD got into a habit of just bringing out a bigger and bigger bad guy as the weeks and seasons went on, so bringing out a new big bad and killing him off so quickly was a bit refreshing. Klaus should remain the main target for a while because he's that awesome.

Eric: I actually think so. I do agree that we have enough bad guy in Klaus, but I can't help but feel like Mikael was a waste of good talent. Maybe we could have saved the Vampire Vampire Hunter for later in the season...

More surprising: when we learned Katherine had been posing as Elena, the abduction of the Originals or the fact that no male high school student asked Rebekah to the dance?

Matt: Rebekah all the way. She's been practicing all these cheerleader moves in front of the football team for weeks, right? Where's the cocky quarterback who has taken notice of this new girl and wants to diagram a play in her end zone... if you know what I mean? Come on.

Steve: Rebekah is new in town, mysterious, intimidating and almost unattainably hot for the general population, so I can kinda see that. Katherine as Elena ... it's hard to be thrown for a loop by something that's been done almost too often at this point. Which leaves us their abduction of the Originals by default. I definitely didn't see that coming and it set up a great arc for the spring. You would think Stef and Kat would refrain from poking the vampirical bear that is Klaus after all they've been through, but revenge is a powerful motive.

Dan: Yeah, we've seen the Katherine thing before and no normal high school student would have the courage to ask out the incredible Rebekah, so I will go with the Original abduction. Way to go, Stef!

Eric: While I admit I definitely was shocked by the classic Katherine swap (I mean, it's been awhile!), I have to give it to Rebekah not finding a date! Look, clearly I was never a jock in high school, but I've watched enough television to know the cheerleaders always go out with the football players. There's no way they didn't see her at cheerleading practice wearing those short shorts and ask her out on the spot. Right? Support me here Mr. Athlete, Matt.

Could you beat Klaus at beer pong?

Matt: Probably not. But Never Have I Ever?!? I'd have him wasted in 30 seconds. Never Have I Ever... lied about yanking my mother's heart through her chest? DRINK!

Steve: Does Eric worship the ground Candice Accola walks on? No offense to your boy, Dan, but I am the man at beer pong. He'd get schooled unless he compelled me to lose, but that would just be pathetic on his part.

Dan: No. Neither can Steve. Nobody can.  ou can't beat Klaus at anything. You can't even get your murder plan correct against him. He is the absolute man!

Eric: God no. Did you see how badly he was stomping that other team? It was like one cup to seven at that point. I'm much more interested in challenging him for a little 2-on-2 guy/girl teams. His ego would probably pick the most useless supernatural on his side, Elena. I got dibs on Bon-Bon. Sorry, Caroline, but I'm taking a witch in case I need her vampire migraines in the clutch.

Name one thing you hope to see happen on The Vampire Diaries in 2012.

Matt: How about one thing I hope NOT to see? Katherine. She really has to go.

Steve: Two words: For. Wood.

Dan: I hope to see no dead people return to Mystic Falls.

Eric: Steve! Stop stealing my Caroline answers! You make me come up with real answers here. As much as I love Klaus and Rebekah bonding with the gang, I want to see some serious Good V. Bad in 2012. Let the real evil come out. And more Forwood.

1.Fave Scene:The Mikael/Klaus standoff was epic...but on a overall character evolution note...Damon and Elena's relationship has developed into best friend territory, they aren't fighting it, they're working together and they genuinely are friends. Admitting that they trust each other, it's been a long time coming...a season ago neither of them would allow themselves to be this close w/o pushing the other away. Same goes with Katherine's move to save Damon and him telling her to take care of herself, and her discussion with Stefan...the character growth exhibited in those scenes were huge! 2.Yes. I would have liked to see him hang around a bit longer...although it was kind of tough watching him verbally abuse and berate Klaus like that...common element of psychopathy? troubled childhood. 3.technically none of them. Rebekah's intimidating and came out of the blue. Katherine has subbed for elena too many times...it's like the first element of any of Damon's plans along with somebody dying. And they've been hinting around at Stefan's interest in those caskets for too long to. But if I had to choose I go with the kidnapping the Original Bodies. I love Stefan, especially Badass/Jerk Stefan but I was a bit surprised he went there on his own...tho technically Katherine helped. 4.Nope.I think the only thing I could beat Klaus at is moral goodness. 5.The same answer I always will give. Elijah. We needs him lots. @Liz. Im not a Bonnie fan but it's because she's poorly used and lacks development so I agree. More development can make her more likeable. It's a shame that the other characters continue to evolve and grow and she doesn't. She's just thee.

1. Fav Scene: Elena realizing that Stefan may not be worth saving and calming Damon down... I think we are gonna see some Delena action now. 2. I think that they are seriously trying to make Klaus completely invincible and I don't see the reason. Killing Michael was the last known way to get rid off him. What they should have done was let Michael get hurt and then run off but come back at some later stage. 3. The abduction of the orignals was the most surprising. It seems Stefan can think better when he doesn't have his humanity in the way...
What are the panelists obsession with the fact Rebekah never getting a date to the dance? The writers new they were never going to allow her to go to the dance so why waste time getting someone to ask her out when they could just use that useless Matt. A more prudent question or comment is how heartbreaking was the scene where Rebekah tells Elena that she has never been to a dance and then she stakes her... Rebekah is going to come back with a vengeance and a half... 4. Who cares? Why are the round tables asking stupider questions every week??? 5. I have more than one thing I want to see. Stefan unstaking all the Originals. The witch necklace needs more screen time, maybe an appearance of the original witch herself.

Sorry for posting twice, was something wrong with my mac. As Lou, I also want to see more development with Elena. But the question is, how can they do it in a believable way. A believable break down (depression, alcohol, nervous break down ++). She might just be a girl dealing with things in a healty way (I know, rare in the world of tv). Have a good cry, an inner battle and then putting it behind her without forgetting the people that she loved and lost. But so far Elena hasn't really had the time for a break down, at least she might feel that way. There has always been someone to fight, and trying to survive. like Buffy once said "right now I'm just trying to survive". Elena has a need to protect the people she love and will always put them first and she has to be strong for them, but she also has a survival instinct. So far these things have kept her from falling apart. But maybe once things slows down a bit (sooner or later it has to slow down some) she will feel the heavy load and fall apart. But she cant right now, it would believable but her guard would be down and she would be an easier pray.. Thats my opinion at least.

Great episode! In 2012 I hope that Elena and Damon finally get together! Damon deserves a chance to be with the girl he loves.

The biggest question is: what will they do after this season is over? Is there a story big enough or a person/thing bad enough to top the original/klaus storyline? What will they do next? Kind of feels like they are running out of shocking stories (I know there are a lot of stories they could go with, but can anything beat Klaus or the Originals?), or is it just me? I really hope they get more seasons because I love the show. But what storylines could they use? There are only so many things that can happen in a small town like Mystic Falls, what more can happen there without it becoming redundant and far fetched? I am a Delena fan (and a huge Nina fan), but I love the show as a whole. So I would watch either way. Once I start watching something I usually have to watch it to the end. Even if the quality sinks, my curiosity will still wonder what happens to the storylines and characters and how it will end

Couldn't agree more with Lou! Give Elena some depth, they've done a great job with once seemingly two-dimensional characters like Damon, Caroline, even Matt and Tyler, it's time they gave Elena the same. Otherwise soon the main character will pale in comparison to her supporting players.
