Hawaii Five-0 Review: New Year, Same Five-0

"Ka Ho'oponopono" - The Fix

In our first offering of 2012, Steve and Five-0 took on a complex case that ended up being about more than was initially believed. I really enjoyed the twist and turns that it took, as I kept changing who I suspected and never saw the truth coming.

Sadly, that was the majority of my enjoyment for this episode, as there were some moments that forced me to yell at the TV is disbelief.

To start, I’m really done with Shelburn. I was hopeful that when Joe and Chin Ho were in the car after the Yakuza drove by, we would get some sort of information. Sadly, nothing. Then, at the end when Steve pointed out he was tortured and Jena Kaye died and he wanted answers, I thought we might finally get the next bread crumb . Nope, nadda. I’m so tired of the show bringing up Shelburn but not moving the plot forward that I’m at the point where I simply don’t care anymore.

Joe and Chin Ho

Wait, we did learn that Joe help Hiro fake his death. Is this connected to Shelburn? Who knows?!? Joe got out of the car and walked away. Then again, Joe did a lot of walking out in this episode. At the police station, for example. Since when can the suspect be the one who decides when he is done and strolls out? I guess if the head of Five-0 is working as you’re personal chauffeur you can. Really, are you kidding me?

Then again, Steve had his fair share of beyond believable moments as well. First, he decided that Joe’s method of getting answers was a good one when he kidnapped the replacement jury member to get answers out of him by pretending to hold him off a cliff edge, then arrested him afterwards for the answers he gave. Really, are you kidding me?

Afterwards, he decided to go solo into a Yakuza compound to rescue Joe. I’m not what I was more shocked by on this one: That he did a commando style raid, that he went alone or that he didn’t just arrest them all for kidnapping. After all, he had no problems arresting a guy he dangled off a rock ledge with a bag over his head.

Okay, to be fair, I did enjoy Lori and Kono at the school, especially Lori's reaction to the kid trying to run. While they seem to still be trying to figure out what image they want for Lori, I think she and Kono made a pretty nice team and hope we see them do more "girl power" scenes together.

In closing, I fully acknowledge that this series is a work of fiction and that many shows take liberties in the name of entertainment. However, that doesn’t give the writers carte blanche to assume the viewing audience knows nothing about the subject material or that we would believe anything they write. How about this: if you’re going to take reality off the table, could you write in some light sabers, phasers or an elf or two? Just to keep things interesting.

@Zia - I forgot to answer your question: we all are obsessed in a certain way with something and/or someone or. Some with Lori (like/dislike), others with AOL (like/like), others with the show etc.

@Zia - Ok, let's say we find out who Shelburn is but then comes the question WHY? So let's look at the big picture. I'm going to write down all those peoples name who were/are implicated, let's see if we can make a logical connection or speculation:
- the Governor (she was dirty)
- Noshimori
- Wo Fat
- some people from China
- Shelburn
- McGarrett Senior (because he found out)
- Joe (at this point I don't know what to believe, whose side is he on)
- Kesi's father (maybe?) I guess this has something to do with politics.

@Martinelli......Shelburne is the next step in us finding out what is going on, so revealing him/her should give of some answers. For Senior McG and Joe to be keeping this from Steve for so long, then there has to be more then just Wofat being a bad guy that John McGarrett was trying to expose. Or was he trying to cover something up that he did? We aren't obsessed with this show are we. Even if we don't always agree with the way they are handling this show, they do have us guessing and anticipating.

H50 clearly took the lead regarding review comments on TV Fanatic, don't you think?

I did some thinking and I'm not interested in who Shelburn is. I'd rather want to find out what they want to hide, cover up and why. During this waiting period I think I'm going to watch all the episodes with Joe and concentrate on the things he's saying. Maybe I'll find out more. I already have a couple of ideas.

@Zia...I thought that sometimes they don't want to put new eps up against some big event even if on another network, I'm not sure about that.
I love Kono and Steve working together but no romance please.

@jschoi.....the football game is not being shown on CBS, so their must be some other reason for the repeats. H50 needs to be ahead, since they are finishing up 2.15 this week and it takes 2-4 wks to film, edit, and produce we are looking at repeats over the next month or so. I agree its frustration having to wait for a new episode and then get another repeat.

@Martinelli.....you are right, they have not given the reason all this is happening. Hopefully with the revealing of Shelburne, we will get answers sooner then later. Although the Wofat story line is not going to be resolved for a long time. It's a big part of the show and they will milk it for as long as they can. I just hope they give us info a little more quickly then they did with Shelburne.

I looked at the sched and did notice all the shows on Global or CBS tonight are reruns, maybe it's because of the football game tonight. I wish they would just show some eps in a row while this story line is going on. The interruptions just get in the way and keep dragging it out. It' also taking forever to get to ep 17 when we hopefully get some answers on Lori one way or another. I'd at least like to know instead of being in the dark.

@HFO....It's not just Lori, I don't want Kono and Steve together either. He needs someone outside the team. He is her boss, she calls him boss. Romance between team members usually happens when a series has nothing else to show and is coming to an end, it's the kiss of death. I think H50 has much more to explore before that. Please don't kill the show. @Lena.....Fox shows start at their own time usually later then everyone else, but I'm surprised that the CBS shows, NCIS and NCIS LA, have not shown as many. I did not remember them showing any repeats earlier and they started at the same time. But they are showing new ones tomorrow, and with all the repeats coming up for H50, I bet they catch up quick, while filming ahead for the other shows.
