Hawaii Five-0 Review: New Year, Same Five-0

"Ka Ho'oponopono" - The Fix

In our first offering of 2012, Steve and Five-0 took on a complex case that ended up being about more than was initially believed. I really enjoyed the twist and turns that it took, as I kept changing who I suspected and never saw the truth coming.

Sadly, that was the majority of my enjoyment for this episode, as there were some moments that forced me to yell at the TV is disbelief.

To start, I’m really done with Shelburn. I was hopeful that when Joe and Chin Ho were in the car after the Yakuza drove by, we would get some sort of information. Sadly, nothing. Then, at the end when Steve pointed out he was tortured and Jena Kaye died and he wanted answers, I thought we might finally get the next bread crumb . Nope, nadda. I’m so tired of the show bringing up Shelburn but not moving the plot forward that I’m at the point where I simply don’t care anymore.

Joe and Chin Ho

Wait, we did learn that Joe help Hiro fake his death. Is this connected to Shelburn? Who knows?!? Joe got out of the car and walked away. Then again, Joe did a lot of walking out in this episode. At the police station, for example. Since when can the suspect be the one who decides when he is done and strolls out? I guess if the head of Five-0 is working as you’re personal chauffeur you can. Really, are you kidding me?

Then again, Steve had his fair share of beyond believable moments as well. First, he decided that Joe’s method of getting answers was a good one when he kidnapped the replacement jury member to get answers out of him by pretending to hold him off a cliff edge, then arrested him afterwards for the answers he gave. Really, are you kidding me?

Afterwards, he decided to go solo into a Yakuza compound to rescue Joe. I’m not what I was more shocked by on this one: That he did a commando style raid, that he went alone or that he didn’t just arrest them all for kidnapping. After all, he had no problems arresting a guy he dangled off a rock ledge with a bag over his head.

Okay, to be fair, I did enjoy Lori and Kono at the school, especially Lori's reaction to the kid trying to run. While they seem to still be trying to figure out what image they want for Lori, I think she and Kono made a pretty nice team and hope we see them do more "girl power" scenes together.

In closing, I fully acknowledge that this series is a work of fiction and that many shows take liberties in the name of entertainment. However, that doesn’t give the writers carte blanche to assume the viewing audience knows nothing about the subject material or that we would believe anything they write. How about this: if you’re going to take reality off the table, could you write in some light sabers, phasers or an elf or two? Just to keep things interesting.

@ Martinelli.....NCIS LA probably won't give us any Kensi/Hawaii 5-0 connections, if there are any. I still am hoping though, that there are. I think we might be in the minority on that. @Amazingalex......It does look good. I think that they extended Terry O'Quinn's contract which should put him through most of the rest of the season. So that is why I am sure that this story line will continue after 2.14, but hopefully we get more answers, other then just who Shelburne is. I do enjoy guessing, but don't like being strung out too long. I like Joe also, but I get frustrated with him, because he frustrates Steve. But then again I get frustrated with the writers who drag this out too long. I guess if I didn't like the show, I would not be commenting so much on this, so I think they do some things right.

@kelley..that is NOT what I said he said. He said it is a key part of the show.He thinks the bromance and the carguments are an important aspect of the show I did not say he said they are the ONLY part of the show that makes it successful. He often gives credit to daniel and grace. His quote is on a fan site if you would like to read it yourself.

I don't watch for the Steve/Danny bromance and I'd be surprised that Alex said the success it due to Steve and Danny. That would be a bit insulting to Daniel and Grace. The show is so much more for me than the Steve/Danny moments. Maybe that's why I'm enjoying this season so much because I don't have to listen to Danny's rants as much. Sure some of their moments are funny and enjoyable but I don't want a forced car argument every week. The show is about the team, all four of them, not just Steve and Danny. Danny is in fact my least favourite of the four.

@Zia..I found the preview. I did not watch last nights epi yet that is why i did not know they had shown it. Oh it looks so good!!!!!!! And we were right, joe is a good guy!!!!! I love joe! I wish he could stay.

@Zia..where is the preview for next week? I have not seen it yet. I will go look for it. I like danny too but not in the way I like steve. :) :)I think they play off each other really really well. Maybe it is getting blurry cause we have not had it as much this season. Even AOL said that is the key to this shows success, the bromance, and if they mess with it it could mess with the show. He is right but unfortunately the writers are not listening to him.

@jeffrey...oh I have so many ideas for this show. I wish I could write for them. I am less then impressed with the writers right now. ALthough you may not like what would be my first script cause it would involved lori and a cliff. Or maybe lori and wo fat in a steel cage match. Whatever would take lori out would be my first priority. ha ha!

@Martinelli..LOL about your feelings towards danny. Dont hold back!! ha ha! I like him probably because I like his relationship with steve. They have become like brothers and what has gotten in the way of that is lori not danny. I do agree he mumbles and sometimes I have a hard time understanding him. That can be frustrating but all in all I like all four of the main characters. Not as much as steve baby but that is no secret. :) I miss the steve danny moments, we have not had as many this season and I want them back to bonding. To me that is a key element of this show. They have cast that aside to try to shove lori down our throats and that is why alot of us dont like lori. We were bound to disagree about something eventually, ha ha!! No biggie! :)

@Zia - Tonight is NCIS LA night (tomorrow for me) so let's hope we will know more but to be honest, I don't think so. This epi will be about Sam and that girl from Sudan. The magic number of 400, ha? Yesss, we did it!

Looks as though Adam is a bad guy. I just watched the preview for next week again. It will be interesting to see how they get Steve and Joe out of the meeting with Adam and the Yakuza thugs. I was blaming H50 for the repeats, but I think its a CBS thing. CBS' Tuesday schedule is new tonight, but they go back to repeats next week, while Monday goes to new episodes. I don't know what the thought process is at CBS, but this is more frustrating. They should have their break and then put on the new shows back to back.

Isn't it great that, hopefully, we all live somewhere were we have a choice. Where we can choose to like or dislike a character on our favorite tv show. The only other show I get to watch on a regular basis is The Good Wife and I don't like Carey, although that may be changing after last ep. My point being the show would not be the same without him.
In a few years I will be spending a good part of my life in countries that don't have the freedoms we take for granted, it's my choice and I have the freedom to make it. It also means I will miss a lot of H0, thank goodness for Amazon.
