epi was solid compared to most. this show started off satirical. The moment it blew up and took itself too seriously the writing got all screwed up.Ryan deliberately tried to send messages rather than just letting the show be.I didn't get how drudging up the christianity v homosexuality bit was necessary. The God Squad (which is what the Celibacy club revamped?)all of a sudden pondering if it was ok to deliver a lesbian valentine. It was another forced attempt to insert another message about tolerating gays, which was redundant.I like the Mercedes triangle and the problem with it isn't the people involved so much as the writing that's been put into place from the beginnning.cedes isn'tKurt,Rachel,or Finn therefore they'll NEVER spend enough time on her to properly map out a love triangle (just like they don't spend enough time on Tina,Artie, Puck etc.)and it would have been believable if they hadn't had that major screwup with the casting and fired "sam" before rehiring him again.

Matt definitely got shredded last week and it was so unjustified and insane, because he was giving an HONEST review.I agreed with it...just as I see your points in most of this review as well.I can't help but think this review you really unleashed some things in retaliation to the copious amounts of commenter bashing last week. While I totally got where you came from (still do)this time in addressing the naysayers it did take away from the actual reviewing of the episode. It's hard to ignore people, I get that, but feeding into the bs doesn't help matters either. I love that you have the balls to be brutally honest...stick with that, minus the addressing the fellow Gleeks who criticize you bit. : )

I HATED this episode. You've counted a lot of the reasons, so I won't repeat. Let me just say: Sugar = worst character EVER. And to give her a whole episode.

I think this is the "jump the shark"episode for me, and I won't watch any more Glee.

That really is weird how the have this song in the episode and Whitney Houston passes away. While Amber Riley is probably the 2nd best singer on this show it's amazing when you hear other people sing Whitney songs just how much better she was than everyone. She truly might have had the best voice of all time. The power, the pitch, the tone, incredible range. She just had everything

    @ BrittanaLover
Thank you for clearing that up for me. Unreal that they had recorded that prior to her passing. It was a lovely performance by Amber.

  6. Vicky

That was a great performance by Amber Riley and to think that it was recorded way before Whitney died is simply amazing. Such an amazing coincidence, that episode was already scheduled for last night. Wow. RIP Whitney, great performance Amber.

I actually do agree with everything you say but don't you let TVD slide alot on the whole continuity and bringing up issues and not really addressing them either so I wonder if Julie Plec like pays you for all those stellar reviews you give while Ryan Murphy (which I would argue isn't even involved in writing much of Glee anymore and like Kevin Williamson got bored and moved on). While TVD is a fantasy show is does do alot of bringing up issues that happen to everyone and not really discussing them. I really would like to know why you can be really hard Glee but you don't do the same with TVD when it imo also has gone off track and episodes haven't been stellar (I am aware you graded the last tvd episode lower than usual but like I mention you don't seem as technical about tvd storylines as you are glee's).

so where was the quinn who was totally against finchel in the last episode, she is letting her clone sing to rachel from Finn
when i first saw stereo hearts i thought that maybe they were trying to prove to rachel she can get better (aka jon)
and if ita for Rachel finn could request somethig from broadway maybe?
and when was the last time Rachel sang??

I think people are forgetting that there's a difference between a RECAP and a REVIEW. A review should state what's good or bad about the episode, what's working and what's not. This is not a RECAP. While I may not agree with everything the REVIEWER stated, sometimes his comments make me realize why an episode doesn't really resonate for me.

Glee is what I would call the Tv version of Tommy Boy, Ace Ventura, Dumb & Dumber. It's a check your brian at the door type of show yes it does try and tackle some serious issues but isn't going to delve into them the way say a teen drama show like 90210 would. It's not that kinda show it's as someone put it earlier a show about kids who sing. I do think the show would benifet from triming the cast down and condencing the story lines. It's a show that midway through season 3 is already in decline. Had a nice run but it's on the downward spiral.

  11. Sammie

I ship Rachel with anyone BUT Finn. Finchel is one of the worst, most nauseating couples ever. This whole getting married plot needs to end now. Put her with Puck or Sam please!!

Also, can't stand the Sam/Mercedes/Shane triangle. I'm just supposed to accept that Sam and Mercedes have some epic love cuz they had some summer fling that we never saw. For me to get emotionally invested in a couple then I need to actually see them fall in love and not just be told they did. Forcing a couple is beyond annoying to a viewer.

Sorry, I think that bias won for you instead of objectivity. It's like you are looking for things to bitch about and this episode was solid with great performances. It didn't fix Glee, but it kinda stabilized thematic-wise, and that's good.

Respect where respect is due, you are just bitter now.

  13. Ella

And I would totally SHIP Joe and Rachel ! She's always with Finn it's annoying, they even wanna get married !

  14. Ella

I loved the Stereo Hearts cover, I think Samuel/Joe's voice is really AMAZING ! And so are his eyes lol !

  15. SugarMagnolia

Joe Hart never exactly said he was opposed to gays, he simply said he had never met anyone gay before so he didn't know where he stood on the subject. I see no problem in him taking only a day to figure out that "love is love".

I think this is an excellent review that identifies the problems with Glee quite clearly. This idea that one is not permitted to criticize the show is ludicrous. If you just want to park your brain at the door and enjoy it, go for it. But thats not how everyone is wired.

I find Glee to be a preachy, incredibly poorly written mess of a show that really only gives a crap about, maybe, 3 or 4 of its characters, and treats the others like paperdoll cut-outs to be maneuvered around each week with little rhyme or reason. There's a great arrogance in the way Glee is written and run (not surprising given its egomaniac creator). But the tragedy of it is that there is the potential for a good, entertaining show trapped somewhere in there. There's a ton of talent in the cast. But its just squandered on a weekly basis, which is sad.

Glee STINKS! There are so many better shows on TV than Glee!

  18. Mary

I have to agree that if Glee is going to tackle such serious storylines that they need to handle them with care. And to the person who said they don't have enough time, maybe they shouldn't jam so many storylines into 1 episode. This is where their constant introduction of new characters becomes a problem. Why do I care that Rory likes Sugar? Both characters are barely shown in most episodes and have little to no interaction. And I still don't really get why, if they were going to let Sugar into the club in the end, we had to go through the whole 2 clubs storylines.
But back to the serious stories, as a Christian who struggles with aligning the beliefs of my church on homosexuality with my personal beliefs and knowing what is right, this isn't a decision that can be made overnight. It's something I struggle with all the time.

  19. bobby

Who the hell cares if someone is gay it is not y'all life so stay out of theirs people can't help who they love I am straight but I have some gay friends and I don't judge them but the people who are homophobic I judge you.

  20. Lisa

Anyone else feel like Rachel and Finn are throwing their lives away? Why can't they just live together in New York? I think the parents might rather they do that than rush into a teen marriage. If she stays in Ohio just so she can be finn's wife is a waste of time and a waste of a good storyline. I'm a romantic and a Finn and Rachel fan since the begining, but this is so not the direction I'd want to see from them. If they go through with this it will be a mistake. I have a feeling Rachel will back out at the last minute. At least I hope so. Too young, way way too young.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: It's a show about teenagers who sing. That very fact should lower your expectations and standards considerably.

  22. phil

I'm glad somebody finally called homosexuality an abomination, even though it was quickly washed out with the additional comments. The Bible also condemns tattoos, so I have a problem with Joe. All the Bible says about Simon is what his political persuasion was. Did they ever show or mention the God Squad before? Were there other members? I hoped we had seen the last of Karofsky, but now they need to follow up and he's suddenly a junior, meaning he was the school's leading bully as a freshman? Rachel's dads are even dumber than I thought. They should have appeared long ago. Isn't Burt supposed to be in the US Congress now?

  23. Kelly

Matt, the ratings for season 3 are like the ratings for season 1, the only reason season 2 was so high, was because of all the commercial music. It's funny that you would reference season 2's ratings when you felt that's when Glee went down hill.

of course, I meant brittana and god squad scenes;)

@Matt: keep on doing your job as a reviewer/critic. you are not the only reviewer I read who is currently frustrated with the show.

This time, Matt, you were a bit too harsh, although I understand where your frustration with glee is coming from. This was the first episode in a long time that I actually enjoyed watching without rolling my eyes every 5 minutes. The songs were great - especially Mercedes' - and fitting. And the writers finally remembered that they have the britana couple, yeah! Maybe that is one of the main reasons I was able to enjoy the episode. I even liked Rory's version of "home". The god squad scence were a bit over the top, but I guess that was the point.

@jr116: So, you felt offended by this episode, and I feel offended by your homophobic comments hiding behind your religious belief. I don't understand why it is ok for you to question people and their lives so harshly and disrespectfully, but not for others to question certain behaviour by some religious people, isn't that hypocritical?
