Gossip Girl Review: Daring to Dair!

by at . Comments

The spirit of Valentine's Day was in the air on Gossip Girl Monday night, but did "Crazy Cupid Love" tug at our collective heartstrings, or did it flatline amid high expectations?

There was plenty wrong with the episode, but at least Dan went there. He did it!

There's no longer any doubt about how Gossip Girl's underdog non-couple feels about one another. Dan's feelings may be stronger (or at least less complicated, with no dowry looming over Rufus) than the reverse, but they're mutual. He kissed Blair and unlike the first time, it wasn't just Dan doing the kissing.

On the contrary, she was all for it. That was awesome.

Whether you're rooting for a Chair series endgame or for unrequited Dair love, you have to concede that the show has short-changed both twosomes of late, and that something had to give one way or the other.

Blair probably should have run off with Chuck last week. Or the week before, during the now-infamous pre-wedding confession. But she didn't, and Dan subsequently remained in the romantic picture.

Tonight, he decided to make the most of that opportunity, and give the Hump credit for having giant cojones. Sadly, crazy Georgina was creeping nearby and engineered the ultimate c--k block on Dair.

Hot Dair Action?!

I didn't think he'd actually do it, or that she wouldn't pull away. The long-awaited kiss was worth the wait for those who have watched Dan and Blair grow together and experience so many near misses.

The evolution of their relationship has been an enjoyable constant in recent months, culminating in Blair's recollection of all the reasons "Serena" should love him. That scene was as heartfelt as it gets.

How adorable slash hot was that kiss, too? Leighton Meester was typically wonderful in conveying the mixed emotions of feeling forbidden to do such a thing but at the same time wanting it SO badly.

While this chapter was cut short, the love story remains an open book.

Make no mistake, Dair is no longer just a momentary obstacle or a blip on the radar. Blair and Chuck may indeed end up together in a year or so, but after this? Dair is the real deal, and all bets are off.

The fallout should be interesting, with Georgina holding the infamous photo as blackmail, Serena bitter at her BFF for moving in on Dan, and Chuck apparently for revenge against Dan for moving in on Blair.

The juiciest part of all of this is that the Dair kiss has dealt a serious blown to Chair and Derena ... and Blerena and Duck. No one will be able to wrap their minds around (or get over) this one anytime soon.

At least I think that's Chuck's motive. His random hookup with Alessandra was preceded by an unintentionally hilarious request for info on Dan's book. What could she possibly reveal that would hurt Dan?

Therein lies the problem with Gossip Girl these days. Dair did all they could to salvage this installment, but they can't stop the majority of the plots from feeling disjointed and patched together haphazardly.

Take Blair's return to N.Y. for example. Needing a way to push Louis out of the picture for one week, but still have him looming over Blair, they give a "minder" ... who's conveniently absent at exactly the wrong time.

Then there's Georgina's desire to break a mega-scandal because she's ... bored? Until Dan outs her, because she has the loudest cellphone ring ever, so she can't? But she magically gets her hands on Blair's prenup?

Or Nate's desire to woo Lola at a party Gossip Girl told him he's throwing, which can't happen because she won't cater Spectator events, but shows up at when Chuck moves the shindig to his place spontaneously?

BD Pic

It doesn't make a lot of sense. Even if you're entertained by it all (and for the most part I am), you can't escape the fact that the show tries to strong together seriously convoluted plots with 2-3 lines of dialogue.

What else did we learn Monday? Where do we even begin. Some of the major developments:

  • Ivy's been staying in the Hamptons with Cece, who is totally the frontrunner in this spring's Gossip Girl death pool if she wasn't already. Ivy ran into Lola, who she'd bet before in Florida. Obviously.
  • Lola's a cutie who's playing hard to get, which only causes Nate to want her more. Love it. Also love that she's apparently clueless about everything that's gone on. Time for some recon/payback!
  • B's minder has a thing for Louis or is a serial murderer intent on offing her. Or a bit of both.
  • Fair, young Dorota was once wooed in a Polish beet field. Too bad that story was cut short.
  • Serena pines for Dan and broods a lot. Not too much else going on in the land of S of late.
  • Georgina employs various minions, including Nate's random Vanessa look-alike assistant.
  • Phillip and Milo? Say a prayer for those guys.

All in all, this week was very much up and down for me. The Georgina/G.G. and dowry angles are all over the place and on the verge of being mishandled to the point where it's hard to take them seriously.

That said, Dair continues to carry the show, just as Chair was once the reason to tune in. Which of the two couples has a brighter future romantically? Will Serena sabotage Blair before Chuck undermines Dan?

Can't wait to find out.

Before we turn it over to your comments, here's next week's promo for "Cross Rhodes." Blair looks like she wants it bad. Again. Consider this a 20-second glimpse of the next round of fan wars about to erupt ...

Are Dan and Blair soulmates?

Dair-for-ever

@ S - thanks - glad to know someone's reading my comments :) I feel bad about getting so invested in Dair - knowing how the writers will make Chair endgame - but sigh! somehow the whole vibe of how they didn't get along at first, then became friends, then fell in love - that always gets me. We need more of that in a cynical world! With so little time given to Dair, look at how much support they have amassed. In spite of five seasons of Chair, Dair has stood their ground, like an unsinkable ship. Dair FTW4EVR :)

Amygirl

AND was single for long enough to receive some character development and therapy. Then, Dare to Dair.

@Dair For Ever Not everyone hating on Dair likes Chair. I know I certainly don't. I hate both ships. I'd like to think of myself as Team Blair (aka Blair be single) but I dislike Blair so... call it what you want. I did catch the end of the episode, so I know that Louis doesn't love Blair. Blair doesn't love Louis. The feeling is mutual, right (although GG loves to make Louis seem like the evil villain)? Why shouldn't Blair involve herself with other men? Because I have always thought Blair to be the kind of "Hopeless Romantic" girl who stays with one guy. Who wants to be with that one guy. Blair being romantically involved with 2 guys (I'm not counting Louis, which is pretty generous considering they're married!) is so OOC I find. I would be open to a Dair relationship if she had severed off ties with Louis and Chuck.

@SuperIdole, Kudos, for the flattery. In terms of reality, the realism that might be applied to Dan and Blair's future relationship can be based in most consensual friendships to romantic entanglements. After all, 42% of Americans have admitted (mostly on dating website surveys) of previously or currently dating a working colleague or friend so to speak. In the United Kingdom it is closer to 1 in 5, while there are similar studies in other countries. Some of those relationships fail to workout due to conflict of interest such as a supervisor to employee relationship while college/university romances work well too. Such is the case of both Dan and Blair attending NYU. Now, I expect a dissertation as a rebuttal. Thank you...

@PTY First I must admit that I always read your comments and through that I know your are really smart/intelligent in all sorts of a way. (to bad you are a Chair fan, take that as compliment:)
But my point was this and also one of my favorit equote: "There is no such thing as bad publicity except your own obituary." We have sit through this Chair angst love for years now and like to have this underdog lovestory played before my eyes and whatever happens in the end I don't care, just as long I will have this played out.
Buy that I mean Blair and Dan together and I don't mean to sound spiteful about it.

@Dair for Ever Brilliant comments! Keep posting. :)

Dair-for-ever

In another discussion I read Chair shippers saying that the GG writers themselves have apparently tweeted that Blair is not herself this season. And Chair shippers agree, giving that as the reason for Dair. Ok - I have read comments from Chair shippers about how Chuck has grown, matured, redeemed himself etc. by now. So, by your own account, Chuck's character has evolved i.e. it has changed i.e. he is doing things that can be called "out of character" with what he used to be. But in Chuck's case you find it all positive and realistic - people grow, people can change and become better! Fine, but suddenly in Blair's case it's out of character! Are you kidding me! You can't have it both ways, Chair shippers! Blair has also evolved and matured and thankfully, that maturity is making her realize her childish infatuation for Chuck cannot hold a candle to her deep rooted, adult, emotionally mature feelings for Dan. That is a character progression right there.

Dair-for-ever

The hypocrisy of some Chair shippers amazes me! I am 10000% sure that if Blair had kissed Chuck instead, not a single comment about morals, and married women kissing others would have been made! Ha ha! Suck it. Dair kissed and it was SPECTACULAR. Also Chair and "morals" are oxymorons, given their past antics. Seriously, doesn't the irony of you guys suddenly playing the moral card strike you!?

Ninasmileface

This episode fell short for me, again.
pros: Nate in a St. Judes uniform, Georgina and her husband's relationship, Blair's red dress, Nate finally having to work for a girl, and all of the flash backs to season 1.
cons: Pretty much everything else. Now I have to say I am a Chair fan, but that is not why I am upset about the Dair kiss. Dair are cute together. They are fun to watch and they have similarities. Back in Season four I even wanted them to be together. I think that the problem is not Dan, but Blair. She doesn't know what she wants. I can't believe that someone who clames to be soooooo in love with Chuck can then kiss Dan like that. It's unrealistic and sloppy writing. If they want a love triangle to work then it has to make sense. I will root for Dair only when Blair renounces her love for Chuck, untill then this show is not going to get any better for me. I also really miss Derena, but I guess I'm the only one:/ Oh and any episode with Ivy in it deserves at most 3 stars.

AmyGirl, my guess is that you missed the very end of the infamous wedding episode.
To all the Dair haters out there, that is your opinion. I have watched for many years believing Chuck and Blair belonged together, but to play games and everything else they had to do to actually get the other interested, hmmm... Makes me see that Dan did not have to fake or try hard to get Blair. They actually have a lot in common, as in real life, that goes alot farther than mere attraction.
I'm not saying they should get married, but a little romance would be nice.
