The Vampire Diaries Review: Burning Bridges

by at . Comments

The Vampire Diaries asked its viewers to accept a lot in "Break on Through," not all of which flowed very naturally.

Let's start with the return of Sage. It wasn't exactly organic. First: how did she know Finn was freed from his casket?

Granted, she's 900 years old and clearly possesses certain powers that far exceeds those of the young (not even 160-year old!) Salvatores. But it becomes a dangerous line, a pretty severe writing crutch, when she can simply do and see anything she wants.

Rebekah and Sage

Second: Why did she and Damon suspect Rebekah was up to something? We've barely seen this Original since she and Klaus discovered the White Oak Tree secret in "All My Children." Was she really acting different? Was there any indication Damon should be suspicious?

Third: Finn? Really, Sage?!? This is the Original we know the least amount, making it difficult to really get invested in anything surrounding him or the fiery red-headed mentor of Damon's. It simply seemed random all around that Sage showed up... schemed to deceive Damon... and based all her machinations on love for another character we scarcely know.

Nothing involving Sage worked for me this week, which is saying a lot considering her presence resulted in a near threesome.

The storyline didn't serve Rebekah well, either. The Vampire Diaries has done a tremendous job creating depth to this (gorgeous!) character, but she came across as more pathetic than vulnerable here. I know, I know: it's Damon Salvatore. What woman would not jump at the chance to jump back into his bed? But she was really so willing despite the rivalry that clearly existed between her and Sage? With Sage right there? Looking on mischievously?!?

Can we give Rebekah some credit please? (SPOILER ALERT: At least she'll get her revenge next week.)

Elsewhere: There wasn't really a lot of movement on the Alaric front. Yes, we now know for sure he's one "accidental serial killer," as Damon so tactfully put it. And, yes, that counsel member hit list is sort of scary. But we're still left pretty much where we were a week ago: with Alaric as a murderer; wondering how the ring will affect Jeremy; and appreciative that Matt Davis is getting a shot in the spotlight.

The final line of the episode was even indicative of how the show has been treading water a bit recently: Let's go kill some Originals. We're on board with that battle, Damon. Trust me, I'm excited to see where this all goes. But wasn't that also the mission many weeks ago? Where have we really gone since then? And, honestly, why do they even want to kill the Originals anymore? They aren't even in Mystic Falls, for the most part, and haven't really done much in awhile.

Let's hope the concluding set of season three episodes stop spinning and start moving forward with the momentum that made us all embrace TVD from the outset.

What were the highlights of an overall mediocre installment? A number of nice character moments and exchanges. We had Bonnie embracing Elena; Caroline doing her best to convince Abby to stay, by invoking the memory of her father; Elena shedding quiet tears on the phone with Jeremy (great work in this scene by Nina Dobrev); and, best of all, Stefan realizing that he could overcome his blood lust, thanks to Elena.

You're gonna be okay, she told Meredith. But I somehow doubt the fallen doctor was the only person for whom this message was intended.

What did you think of the episode? Were you intrigued or bored by the appearance of Sage? Do you blame Rebekah for bedding Damon again? Do you care that Bonnie's mom left again? And where can we find Own it. Live it. Love it. bumper stickers?

The final line of the episode was even indicative of how the show has been treading water a bit recently: Let's go kill some Originals. We're on board with that battle, Damon. And, honestly, why do they even want to kill the Originals anymore? They aren't even in Mystic Falls, for the most part, and haven't really done much in awhile. In response to that: They were out of options as Damon and Stefan did not know about there being another white oak tree, thus there was nothing they could do to kill the originals, so that is why it was left alone for awhile but now that they know that there is more white oak the plan was up and running again. I don't know I guess that the people that are complaining about the show, really are not fans. I have never been disappointed by any episode in 3 seasons.

This episode was just ok. The show is definitely much slower than season 1 and 2. I liked the fact that Stefan finally was able to talk to Elena and get her to help him with his issue and the fact that he actually was able to control himself with blood was awesome! The look on Elena's face was so great and priceless when Stefan fed Meredith blood to save her. Hopefully no more of the back and forth between them and they can finally get back together soon. As far as Sage and Rebeccah, that seemed way too forced and not natural, so kind of stupid.

We are all allowed our opinions, but giving it a 3.4 star Matt..really?
Another great episode! Loved it all! Damon is a smart one, no one can ever say other wise! He always has these plans when something goes wrong he ends up with a, the may have taken this or done that but I have this, which I guess was fitting with his Philanthropist comment.
Sorry Ian I love you but you can not dance, however I still found that whole part up to and included the shower scene sexy.
So glad that Bonnie forgave Elena but I am mad at Abby for leaving, I do not think she will survive on her own.
I loved seeing Jeremy, I hope he comes back.
Kudos to Matt Davis he was really good tonight!
Damon is great, the whole thing with he and Sage on the bridge was great! Then the look on her face when Damon said Finn wanted to die was just priceless, I love it when the Salvatore brothers can get under the skin (so to speak) of those who betray them!
Once again Damon had some of the best lines!!
I loved loved loved Stefan saying to Elena he can't be he guy she needs at this time. So there is hope! From what I read in an interview with Paul it does sound like Elena and Stefan will get back together!! YAY!
More great Damon and Stefan moments

Overall fans you have to be honest with this seaon and realize that there's been no real progression in the SL. Your evil Villain hasnt caused the chaos we've been hoping for with his hybrid army. Which has been rendered useless. We are going in circles with SLs which is kill originals & Stefan learning to control is blood hunger. Klaus needs to have a bigger plan then just creating hybrids not to be lonely. It should for taking over the world or something bigger then just Elena being a blood bag for the rest of her life. It should be something bigger then them to fight for.

What would of made sense is if Carol picked up on Rebekah asking her questions about a certain tree! If I was Carol a person who knows about vampires & holds a high position as mayor. Didn't pick up on why is this girl asking me about Trees! Carol bringing it to Damons attention would of been more realistic. Plus Rebekah being at events and things shouldn't have raised suspicion! She's been participating in everything since shes come to MFs. Sages character is a huge disappointment and her motive is lame. There's really not much more to say on her. Seems like Elena is regreting letting Jeremy go. It seems like shes relied on the wrong man in Alaric. Hey 'BoredNow'....maybe you should just stop watching. That's a thought. Then you wouldn't be so disappointed every week. Just move on.
Damon was suspicious because she was bugging him and the mayor at the Grill. This was pretty much spelled out by Damon himself.
I think that people don't like episdoes unless they feature Damon and Elena or Caroline and Klaus. That is just silly to me. It's not all about them.
It can't be all hooking up and fighting every single episode.
I'm just hoping that the bond is broken between the Originals because I don't want Elijah to die...sorry but he's the one we HAVE to save!

I love this show, but it feels like something is missing without Joseph Morgan there. Love me some sexy Klaus! Episodes with Damon Stephan and Klaus...wow!!

I actually liked this episode.... and last week's also. ok they weren't the super action-packed tvd classic eps but they were plot-building. Alaric's madness will set on move eventually jeremy's return, stefan will get back elena( who's been so much better lately- she was unsufferable earlier indeed)... Sage&Finn probably have a role to play, maybe her presence will change Finn's mind about dying, form a full O.V team so what will mama original do? The salvatores have tried so hard all the season to kill klaus- will they succeed in it?(Actually i love them i want them to stay)I miss Klaus 2 eps now- Some Klaus-Caroline-Tyler scene plzzzzzz! Can't wait for next week's epiosode!

I know, I know: it's Damon Salvatore. What woman would not jump at the chance to jump back into his bed? A sensible woman, maybe? Who is human, not a vampire...Breakfast in bed takes on whole new meaning in such a scenario, lol...and I wouldn't want to be that breakfast and then lunch and then leftovers.

Elena is so annoying, it's getting hard for me to tolerate her presence on the screen. She always have this sour puss face and she's soooo judgmental. I thought Stefan would burst into tears when Elena caught him with the blood bags. He couldn't distance himself from them fast enough when she was in the same room. I think I can figure out who the writers favor because Caroline and Damon were awesome in this episode. Leave it to Damon to be one step ahead of double crossing lovesick bitches. He definitely learned his lesson from Katherine. And he better mean it when he said let's kill some originals.
