Grey's Anatomy Review: Staring At Simba

by at . Comments

After almost eight Grey's Anatomy seasons, I don’t expect to be too surprised by the actions of these characters we have all grown to love so much. Except it happened tonight. And I loved it. There is a lot to discuss, so let’s get to it...

Ripped to Pieces. The cases in "The Lion Sleeps Tonight” were harsh, but in a good way. Morgan reached decision time with her baby, Teddy’s patient made her accept her widow status, and a lion attacked a couple. Well, the lion bit was a little unrealistic. But, hey, it made for interesting television and at least no one was trying to give CPR to a deer.

Broken Hearts. Teddy’s reaction at the grief group was priceless. First, the laughter and then the outburst. It felt so real, which is something this series does so well. This arc had felt a little dropped over the past few episodes so it was important to bring it back before season's end. Her dealing with the elderly couple was heartbreaking. I know I was not alone in tearing up a bit.

Battle Of The Exes. How do you work side by side with someone for two years that had previously dated your wife and it never came up? That situation totally sucked for Callie but Mark made a great point. She is taking care of a child, a child that Callie had with Mark, her ex. That has to be tough. Who would have guessed that Arizona had such a fun past and that Mark would end up being the mature one?

The Eyeball Doc. Speaking of Mark, he plans to move in with Julia? I don’t think so. This arc has gaping plot holes that need to be worked better. Yes, of course us viewers know they are together. There is a quick mention of them each week. But we don’t know this character. We met her how many episodes ago and that’s been it. Viewers are emotionally involved in Slexie. It’s because we know them. Why would we care if Mark moves in with Julia or breaks up with her? Answer is... we won’t.

The big brother/little sister interaction between Lexie and Derek was thoroughly enjoyable. We see these two in the OR enough, but seeing the family side is just as fun.

Der Smiles

Separation. Alex Karev, one of a kind. The man may be arrogant, a jerk, downright rude. But one thing is for sure, he is honest. The situation with Morgan is messy. As much as I want to see Alex get in a healthy relationship, this is not it. The girl needs a friend.

The Lion. Who knew that Meredith and Derek spotting a lion on their way to work would not be the most exciting thing of the hour? Gotta love Derek bringing a stuffed lion home to Zola. What. A. Dilf.

Scandal. Now on to the big news. A week had passed and Cristina was still ignoring Owen, being curiously quiet, and had not shared the news with her BFF, Mer. Owen is the Chief of Surgery. He knows better than to discuss this kind of stuff in the scrub room. Breaking the news to Meredith and having Bailey overhear means this story is coming to a head. We still don’t know who the other woman is but we do know one thing: Yang is devastated.

Girlfriend is also super pissed. Her chucking her bowl of cereal at Owen was the highlight of this episode. That was a DVR rewind moment if I ever saw one.

Alex Karev Smiles

Overall, a solid episode on the way towards the finale of Season Eight. TV Fanatics, what did you think? Hit the comments and let us know what you thought of “The Lion Sleeps Tonight”. How heartbreaking was Teddy admitting she is a widow? Who do you think Owen cheated with? What is Meredith going to do with the information? Who else thinks Bailey needs her own story ASAP? Sandra Oh killed it once again. How cool was the room of things found in patients??

New episode next week. While we wait, look for the official Grey’s Anatomy Round Table to gain a new entry in the coming days.

There were more well written and entertaining scenes in this episode than we've had in a long time. Funny: (Christina being Christina and tossing her cereal...priceless) Sad: (the old couple, Teddy telling herself "I am a widow"), more funny: ( Callie interrogating Arizona about her "number" and Arizona doing her fast-talk, plus the "Dr. Robbins help us....whaaa bit... hysterical) Good interactions all around in surgery, in the found objects collection room, in the science lab, and especially all the Calzona scenes. It was a bit surprising to learn that Arizona like Mark has been something of a Don Juan herself. And we find out that dark-haired beauties are definitely Arizona's type. But for those who wanted Callie to go off into a jealous fit it was nice to see that her love for her wife was more important to her. I like that they play these scenes for the humor not the angst. There was more than enough of that for them last season.

As much it sucks to see Owen and Cristina going through this, I think it makes their relationship seem more real. TV shows hardly go there with main couples but it's a reality that people cheat and I'm interested to see how this will play out.

Okay, so I know there's no point in complaining about realistic science, engineering, or medicine in TV. It's a show and I still completely enjoy it. But, I absolutely cringed to see them bringing food into the lab while Cristina was working. Anyone with high school lab experience would know not to do that, and it's just sad to see, especially when they are attempting to portray something as awesome as tissue engineering!

I couldn't highlight what I wrote vs what I was answering to ...I never thought this show was about real doctors (the second part after the HUH was mine). As for Lexie...Please...She needs to step up! This relationship has been wrong in so many ways...They are in...they are out...they are in...they are out... Don't tell me she needs time to make up her mind, she has been doing that for ages!

Owen and Christina - Cereal...Old Christina is back! She is so pissed, the hurt has washed away, the pissed off stage is the best. Owen was a jerk in this episode and the last.
Mer and Der - ZOLA!! She is too cute!
Lexie - I understand her reservation, yes she has feelings for Mark but its like Derek said, if she tells Mark about her feelings she has to be sure its worth it and that she is not about to jump ship when something pops up, Mark is God (lol), weird things tend to happen to him. We all know that Mark will drop the eye doctor in a heart beat.

Wait a minute, did I miss something?? when did Grey's Anatomy ever profess to be a documentary? This is not about real life and doctors being short staffed and working there cutting hands to the bone. Its about relationships, cool surgeries and Meredith Grey. Who can't stand it - stop watching! Personally, I love Grey's Anatomy - that being said,I kinda expected more from the episode after the hiatus, but OMG there was a lion! lol
High time for Teddy to reach this point in the grief process - it was hard to watch.
Alex Karev - still sexy and attracting the wrong sort of woman - why do they always have to be going through some type of emotional roller coaster followed by life threatening medical problems. Pregnant Lady crushed by concrete pole - disaster, Izzie with the cancer - broke his heart and poor Morgan and her premature son who has three pages worth of issues. (I did love all these story lines, don't you just want to hug Morgan??)

Liked it! Like Lexie, like Owen. I wish there were a little more interaction with Meredith and Derek. Happy Callie resolved her jealousy issue. Sad, super sad about the elderly couple. There was another episode a few years ago that I cannot watch because it makes me cry way too much. Whew. I don't think anyone posting actually loves the characters or the show. There is nuance. Good episode and I'm so wondering how these things will wrap up. I hope for a good outcome for Karev, for goodness sakes. And also for Bailey, for goodness sakes! :)

be Mrs. Sloan and a step mom (Because this is what mark wants soon with her and judging by her comment last night. She might not be to far off on thinking about having children with him) I don't think that makes her pathetic i think that makes her smart. Getting involved with mark she has to be more than a 100% sure, there is a kid involved now. So if that makes her pathetic then i guess a lot of women out in the real world are pathetic as well?

Lexie is pathetic and she doesn't seem to know what the hell she wants! I mean choose Mark or Jackson Lexie doesn't want Jackson that has already bee established on the Screen. Jackson is in lust with Lexie, He doesn't love her and he never did. Mark moved on with Eye doctor but even Derek said he would drop her in a second if Lexie told mark her feelings. and at the last ML Scene it's clear mark wants her to tell him that there is hope. Lexie knows she wants mark, She had been in love with this guy since she was 24 years old, she knows that she wants a future with him (She said that much in the first 6 months of their relationship. But Sofia being involved is a lot to take in right now. So she wants to make sure that she's in 100% before she makes any Decision that could possible hurt anyone. I don't see why that's a bad thing consider she has left twice before. As far as Lexie being Pathetic because she is taken her time in deciding if she can be Mrs.

After a hiatus, I thought there would be some movement in plot but nothing really changed. A disappointing episode.

Grey's Anatomy Season 8 Episode 18 Quotes

I was staring at Simba.

Meredith

We have a phrase in the operating room. Don't pet the lion. It means no matter how nice a tumor looks, how small it is, how perfect it's margins may be, it's still a tumor. It's still dangerous and it can bite.
