Grey's Anatomy Review: Unanswered Fates

by at . Comments

Seriously? Seriously.

I need a few minutes to catch my breath after what can be remembered as one of the most emotional and gory finales in Grey’s Anatomy history.

We were warned. We knew this episode was going to be rough. Someone was going to die. The only problem? Knowing it’s going to happen doesn’t make it any easier. So let’s get to it for the last time this season. Put down those tissues, time to discuss “Flight."

Meredith Post-Crash

At Seattle Grace Mercy West Death. Back at the hospital, Webber prepared to take the residents to his annual dinner to celebrate. Ben and Bailey decided to get married and Callie was waiting for her wife to come home. Alex made the decision to go to Hopkins because he needs to know he is good without Arizona holding his hand.

Teddy was offered an incredible opportunity as the chief of Medcom. She didn’t want to take it because she can’t leave Owen in the state he is in. Talk about loyalty. Just a few episodes ago, these two weren’t even talking. This just shows how strong of a friendship Owen and Teddy share. Of course, Owen recognized what Teddy was doing and fired her so she would have to take the job.

How sad of a scene was it to watch Webber, April, Jackson and Alex wait for Meredith and Cristina. Little do they know...

Cristina in Agony

And Then There Were Five. Leading into this episode, I had constantly checked the comments on for the Grey’s Anatomy previews to see who the fans thought were going to die. Top of the list on the death poll? Arizona and April. In reality? Lexie Grey.

RIP Little Grey. In an extremely sad farewell (and in the first 20 minutes!) Lexie Grey died. What an emotional scene! Mark held her hand and confessed his love for her and that they were meant to be. The acting in this scene was incredible. Kudos to Eric Dane for his stellar performance.

So what is the fallout of losing Little Grey? Meredith has now lost another family member, Mark has lost the love of his life and Derek has lost his little sis. I’m not sure how you come back from this.

I have to be honest, I was pretty surprised it was Lexie. I knew there was a chance, but I really didn’t expect it. Will this lead to Meredith back to a dark and twisty place? The one positive to losing Lexie was that it led to a sweet exchange between her and the man she loved.

“I’ve always been in love with you. I’ll always be in love with you."

Heartbreaking.

Damaged Goods. Lexie wasn’t the only one with injuries. Mark needed a make shift surgery, Cristina’s shoulder was out of place, Meredith had a piece of plane in her leg and Derek’s hand is most definitely broken. The most gory? Arizona’s bone peaking out of her leg.

So Where Does This Leave Us? Shonda had made it clear that at the time of filming, no contracts had been signed. This means the fate of all of our favorite docs are up in the air. So what can we expect next season?

Derek’s hand. Will he be able to operate? Will Mark make it until they are found? Cristina is sure she wants to leave Seattle. Jackson chose Tulane. April and Teddy do not have jobs at Seattle anymore. Alex is headed to Hopkins.

Finale Standards? If there is one thing that Grey’s Anatomy does right, it is finales. They are always intense and always emotional. Season eight was a bit of a challenge. Because of not knowing if the actors would be returning, we were left with an open ending. It worked and it didn’t. It felt a bit like the writers were jumping back and forth to hit each story to make sure us viewers know their fates are questionable.

It’s a big cast and it’s hard to coordinate. It would have worked better if SGH was just shown in the beginning and the end; Richard and the other residents waiting at dinner and Owen firing Teddy. Other than that, another great ending to a solid season.

Some After Thoughts

  • I loved the flashback to the pilot episode in the beginning and the voice over at the end mimicking Webber’s words. Ah, nostalgia.
  • How gory was this episode? I had to look away when Arizona showed her bone popping out.
  • In an emotionally charged episode, the writers still found time to throw in a couple jokes. Thank you for that!
  • How good is Yang in a crisis? PS. How funny was she with her shoe?
  • How long until Owen saves them?

So what did you think, TV Fanatics? Was the finale everything you hoped for or did it fall short in comparison to the other season endings? Will everyone else survive the plane crash? Who will return to our beloved TV screen next season? Were you surprised that it was Lexie?

It’s time to say goodbye until next season. Check out the Grey’s Anatomy quotes for the best lines from the hour and make sure to check back for the Grey’s Anatomy Round Table. Hit the comments and let us know what you thought of “Flight” and the death of Lexie Grey. Chyler Leigh, you will most definitely be missed.

Oh, and for the record, this was one of the best (and shocking) finales in Grey's history. It's up there with the season 6 finale. Man....

@NurseMom--That's what I was hoping too lol. Wishful thinking I guess.... This finale was just...I can't even explain it. I was most definitely shocked that it was Lexie, but Shonda was right; it was someone lovable. For a minute I thought Marc was going to die too; thank God he didn't. Poor Callie, she just went on and on about how happy she was and how great she's feeling about her life; but little does she know that the love of her life and her best friend AND father of her child is dying. Does anyone else think that Arizona isn't out of the woods yet? She's coughing up blood and has a bone sticking out. I'm a little concerned. All in all, a gut wrenching, devastating episode, but great as always. I'm already itching for next season to begin!

Grade F. Soooo many stupid things in this episode. And they promise a death and deliver by killing a character that could add vitality to future seasons. The other characters are aging and settling in. Lexie is younger and still has question marks ahead. But noooo, they didn't think of that, just decided to kill her off cause they promised a death. Okay, the actress may have wanted less screen time -- then kill Mark and have Lexie go away for a couple of years for some fellowship or something. It lets the actress have family time, but gives the option of bringing in a "grey" when Meredith is too boringly settled. So my vote, if you have to vote only for those on the plane, would have been for Mark to go. He's a relentless hound dog, which is supposed to make him sexy and interesting, but it's getting old and he should be thinking about how women are treated -- he's got a daughter! Grey's has already had a crisis for callie and arizona, so it seems awful to go that route again. If they'd really wanted to shock they should have done in Yang.

There sure seems to be a lot of negativity in these remarks but I thought it was the best finales ever for one of the best shows on TV. Very emotional and heart wrenching. Fine acting and writing.

Part 2 the corner & there isn't. This is tv not motion pictures where they can really elaborate on scenes. I liked the show myself but so many viewers did not. I am very sorry that Lexie died, from the moment she came on the show I liked her & her character. The 1-hr ending just doesn't make it - too much was packed into the show. I hope they start right at the ending point of last night's show. To me it would be very bogus to have everyone already found & back at the hospital being treated or operated on - plus I think they should have some type of memorial service for Lexie. I am hoping we get to see a real life rescue with Owen heading up the search team but that's just me ...

I heard long ago that bells/chimes means the passing of time. In my opinion, two of the BEST scenes last night were with Owen & Teddy - the first in the operating room when Teddy told Owen why she couldn't leave (Henry)& she wanted to remain a loyal friend to Owen because he's so broken & she admitted to her adding to his misery. Miranda paid close attention to what Teddy told him & she looked at Owen's eyes/face as Teddy was saying that to him. Then of course, when Owen "fired" Teddy for the reason he did. I did not see that coming. To help someone else become great, THAT is a self-less friend. I am sorry to see Kim Raver leave the show. I liked her & she really was a great mentor to Cristina. I think if viewers were not able to watch the first 6 minutes anywhere online as a spoiler, it would have been better for us. The more we know at showtime the more anti-climatic it all becomes as we are anticipating that something bigger/better is right around the corner & there isn't. We just watched the previous episode on our PVR - Lexie was on the plane with Meredith, Yang, Derek, Mark, and Arizona. Alex had to stay home because he "no longer represented Seattle Grace".

Wow, you can always depend on Grey's to throw you a loop. I totally don't understand why we be strung along all season long with the Mark/Lexie storyline for her to just die. Tricky. I will totally miss Lexie, and how sad is it that Mer has now lost another family member? Christina was fantastic, and I loved the open flashback and George mentions. I guess the fact that contracts were not yet finalized at the time of the finale have watched Grey's from the beginning and continue to be a fan... I just hope that at some point we get a reprieve from so many great characters meeting their demise. Too much going on for just one hour, but I'll miss Grey's over the summer.

patm - Arizona wouldn't let Alex go because she was made at him and went on her own. Lexie WAS on the plane. But I thought there were others besides the ones they showed.

if anything greys anatomy finals are the best shame lexie died she will be missed.
