Once Upon a Time Review: The Fruits of Sacrifice

by at . Comments

"An Apple Red as Blood" showed us that Regina's hold on her curse was just as tenuous as the survival of her precious apple tree and the stress was getting to her.

That was quite a dream. The eeriest part was Henry standing there holding a hangman's noose. What a sign of things to come.

Evil Offering

Was the curse really weakening? Well, the apples on her tree were definitely rotting where they grew. I could only imagine that wasn't a very good sign for the evil queen.

But according to Regina and Mr. Gold, Emma's very existence keeps the curse alive. If Emma dies, so does the curse - but Emma's also the only person who can break it. Now there's a conundrum.

Mr. Gold seemed to think that the end was near and said he was planning a trip. Where would the master of the deal go once the curse he helped create is no more? I don't have a clue.

Emma was reeling and she didn't even believe in curses. After talks with Mary Margaret and Archie, she's begun to realize that she needed to put Henry first but figuring out what that meant wasn't easy.

And poor Henry. August was certainly putting a lot of pressure on the kid. As the man continued to turn back into wood, he told Henry he was done trying to convince Emma. So he quit and left it up to an 11-year old. That was lame. After spending most of last week's episode learning about August's plight, this episode was only reminding me why I was never a big fan of the Pinocchio story.

I didn't expect to see the Mad Hatter again and was surprised that Regina brought him to her chamber of hearts... and who knows what else. Apparently the only magic in Storybrooke was what Regina brought with her from the fairy tale world and there wasn't much left. So, in true Regina fashion she used the last of it to wreck more havoc. Unfortunately it came back to haunt her.

As soon as Emma took that pastry I knew that somehow it would end up in Henry's mouth. With no one else willing to play the hero, Henry took the role on himself to save Emma. I bet Regina never saw that coming.

In the fairy tale world, Snow used and army of dwarves and fairies to try and free Charming. Those fairies were fierce. Who would have guessed fairy dust packed such a punch?

Unfortunately Snow was a step behind the evil queen, who grabbed Charming for herself. I liked that in this story she didn't trick Snow into eating the poisonous apple, she simply threatened her one true love. That was enough for Snow to make the sacrifice.

Will Henry survive? How far will Regina and Emma go to save him or take one another down? Is the end of the curse in sight and do you want it to be? With the Once Upon Time season finale on its way, hold onto your hats for the next Once Upon a Time.

"But according to Regina and Mr. Gold, Emma's very existence keeps the curse alive. If Emma dies, so does the curse - but Emma's also the only person who can break it." So basically she could break the curse by commiting suicide?

@ carda
I think it was the first esp. ,( its around the time that they show the story about charming and how Mr. Gold play a role in his twin brother becoming a prince to help his parents pay off the debt on their land.) Well in the real world Regina went to Mr. Gold and question him on were he got Henry. He explain that he have to go out of the city to find her an son, since she was complaining that she needed someone to love, after you find out that she kill her father to start the curse. Hence the name Henry. She also questions his reasoning for why he would chose the savior abandon child at the time. He explain that he have his reasoning, but try to play it off that he did not know that it was the savior child which Regina did not seem to buy his excuse.

@Christine- the reason why henry ate the tart was to show emma that regina did poison the tart. He was try to help emma believe.

@tati - the evidence we have that Regina does not love Henry is that when Emma asked her if she did, we know that Regina lied. And she said that she did love Henry at that time. Otherwise, I agree with your theories.

I think there's merit in the idea that David might almost die but be saved by true love's kiss (though this could well be the cliffhanger to wait and see if he lives). First it would bring the season full circle from the opening scene of the pilot. Two the stories have been Snow and Charming rescuing each other, so there would be balance in her having the opportunity to return the favour. AND three, MAGIC IS COMING - it would be a litmus test for the magic returning, since REgina told Snow the reason her kiss wasn't working in the pilot was because the magic was disappearing, therefore it starts returning = the kiss could work.

SOOO< Emma isn't suspicious at all that Regina take ONE tart out of the oven and gives it to her? And why wouldn't Henry just destroy the tart? Why eat it? And seriously, how long does it really take Emma to pack her goods? It is curious that Emma being the only one who can break the curse and the fact that her death will also end it are interesting - how is she supposed to break the curse without dying?
A lot of crazy things happened this week!

@Bored Now: "He is pretty much the "Charles Widmore" of this show" awww man, I love you :D can you refresh my brain on how Mr. Gold gave the whole Emma family line to Regina in Episode 2 as you just said? I totally can't remember that *_*

Where did Jefferson go when MM kicked him out of the window? When was that explained?
We had a distinct hat-sound there. When was that explained? The hat Regina had did not contain any magic when they first tried to use it. It only became magic when *Regina's* tokens were inserted into it, not because of anything Emma did.
because thats a different hat.Thats a hat from his fairy-tale time. Not the one Emma created. If Emma could create magic on her own without even believing herself
She believes,. She just denies to herself she does. Hence the moments she truly believes her magic works and her lie-detector power works and whens he does not, it does not. :)

@Bored Now - It does need to be explained. Where did Jefferson go when MM kicked him out of the window? When was that explained? The hat Regina had did not contain any magic when they first tried to use it. It only became magic when *Regina's* tokens were inserted into it, not because of anything Emma did. If Emma could create magic on her own without even believing herself, the hat would have been spinning without assistance.

Regina is fully aware of Emma's role in the curse & that she adopted Snow's grandson. Somehow I thought that would be revealed more dramatically.
Mr.Gold pretty much revealed that to her in the very second episode of this show.
