True Blood Review: Sam I Am

by at . Comments

Just when you think you know someone...

A war is coming to True Blood and this was the week of choosing sides. "Somebody That I Used to Know" delivered on multiple fronts with riveting developments in several story lines.

Stackhouse Search Party

I'm going to start with Lafayette because I feel like I haven't given the poor guy his due lately. He has been through so much, what with losing the love of his life and having his mouth sewn shut... and then people still go knocking on his door to do that voodoo that he reluctantly does so well.

His line about being out of the help business to Arlene and Holly was easily one of my favorite True Blood quotes of the week and the scene where Jesus appeared in the car seat next to him tugged at my heart strings. Are you real? Does it really matter? Hookah no, I was just pleased to see him get a moment of happiness before he had to start swallowing spirits again. I sure as hell hope he got to take that small chronic break too.

We've seen all kinds of relationships on this show, but Sam leaning in to kiss, well, himself was a first. I'm glad a smooch on the forehead was all it took to shift Luna back. How amazing, however, was that whole scene when she walked out her hospital room looking like Sam, sassed Officer Doofy and stole some guy's Free Moustache Rides sweatshirt?

When Sam, Luna and Andy showed up to find Jessica alone in the hate group's home, am I right that they weren't alerted to the place's whereabouts by Hoyt? I think Sam got the location from the guy in custody after he went Cobra Commander on him. The woman Luna smelled in the house where Jess was held had to be the large lady friend of former Sheriff Bud who last week let him know the hot tub was just the way he likes it. This would confirm the theory that the former peace officer is behind the hate mongerers.

While Hoyt did the right thing in the end, I don't think anyone was really worried about him shooting Jessica. I liked her admission to him about how she prayed her love would come back, but it just didn't. Was it mere coincidence that Jason also made a reference to love when he was listing the reasons why Sookie shouldn't give up her powers?

Simple Stackhouse has really been dishing the wisdom lately. All the reason he gave his sister were valid, although having to listen to someone thinking about sucking your toes would get annoying after awhile.

Pam and Tara

I had hoped this week would lend some more clarity as to who the vampire on the bridge was. The abnormal fact that Sookie could connect with him had me thinking it had to be Eric or Bill since she has tasted their blood, but then we heard the name "Warlo" from Claudine. Could that be some old handle Bill or Eric used to go by or was it short for warlock and we are looking at an entirely new badass vampire on the block?

Elsewhere, Tara and Pam's relationship continues to get better and better with each scene to which we are treated. Loved Pam's line about her angry and happy face being one in the same.

I didn't have any delusions about Alcide beating J.D. but I had hoped for a little better fight. Shouldn't they have fought as wolves? The love scene between handsome Herveaux and Rikki, though, was all that and then some. I'll wager that hard drives all over the world are working overtime tonight as gif-image after gif-image of that righteous romp are being created.

I still am on the fence as to if Bill has fully swallowed the Authority's kool-aid or still has some angle he is working. I felt for Eric as he had to ultimately take Nora insulting their Maker like she did. The MVP of the night, though, had to go to Russell who just continues each week to drop memorable line after memorable line.

He didn't seem all that wrapped up in the global purge of the coexistence movement did he? He served his purpose, got what he wanted and tonight seemed more concerned with making Steve his new Talbot.

I started off this week mentioning the idea of choosing sides. When it comes to us the fans, I'm still surprised by those of you who are finding this season to be a disappointment. It is your right of course, but I want to hear why from those of you whose thirst for blood has gone unquenched and of course I hope to hear from those of you who - like myself - thought this was yet another great Sunday night of crazy television.

This season isn't as good because the relationships are missing. Sookie/Bill has ended for a while now, with Bill becoming a real jerk. The Sookie/Tara friendship is no more, we hardly see Merlotte's anymore. Jessica/Hoyt are over, so are Terry and Arlene, Jesus is dead, shall I go on? So basically, everythig that made this show great is gone now...

Alcide !!!!!!!!1 Boy, you got me going ! That yummy scene, DAMN !! The way he sent Rikki flying across the room gave me goosebumps lol, and then some ! That was just plain, pure HOT AND WILD !! Though still wanted him to win the challenge. Fucked-up pack, if u ask me !
Tara and Pam just rock ! Awesome scene once more !
Chris, you didn't talk about the flashback, which I thought was pretty poignant ! And sad...Bill daughter was dying and there he was, refusing her the chance to be sickness free...
Russell keeps on killing me ! His lines are just hilarious ! The man doesn't give a rat's ass about Lilith ! He looked like a kid in a classroom, chatting with Steve while the teacher's talking. Got himself a "new toy" lol
I loved the episode ! Thought it was pretty tight !, can't wait for the next one !

@McLebanese : I like your theory !!!! The child-eating vamp could be Warlow... But I agree, there must be something wrong with Sookie's lineage. The parents don't have fairy blood...but hey, if the fairies didn't say anything it must be okay, probably jumped a generation or 2.
NOW, LaFayette ! Man I love the guy, felt for him when Jesus "helped" him. Gosh still makes me wanna cry that he's gone... Now, he was really funny with his jumbo-mumbo.
The vamps, high on vamp blood is still interesting. But I still think they're crazy ! And Bill, WTF? Something doesn't smell right ! Poor Eric, had to listen to that bitch bad-mouth Godrick like that AND watch Bill flipping his vest, MAJOR LET DOWN !!!!
Yup, Jason his shining this week again ! So smart, suddenly !
Glad Hoyt didn't kill Jess, but I think the Fat lady got to him first !
Sam and Sam was just hilarious ! Andy and the other guy's faces in the interrogation room was priceless ! Still wonder what went wrong with Luna though...

continued ) could be Claudine's ultimate end. Two things I am certain of : 1) they're not the biological parents. We know from Bill in Season 3 that fairies are rapists...this could manifest itself in very interesting ways. 2) it's Sookie's blood for sure, and nobody else's. and I am reluctant to assure myself that Claudine ( or the fairies anyway )is behind killing the parents, but knowing that she called him by his name in a parental way or in a way with which someone calls their untrained dog makes me 99 % sure that she is behind it. i hope you guys can further contribute to this. and if am misinformed and/or clueless about some things I am missing ( I could be ), please let me know :) cheers !! the name is Ali, by the way.

@TiffanyO I am becoming more and more certain that the parents are not fairies, and I am sure that it's not about Jason seeing as Claudine screamed - in reference to Sookie: leave the GIRL alone. I think the show will have its own plot for Jason in terms of him being promoted or something like that. It definitely has to do with Andy's fate in the show, and I am beginning to feel that Andy's expression of hating this town could imply a potential retirement...and I am being optimistic here. Had the parents been fairies or even half fairy such as Sookie, the "vampire" would have devoured them to the last drop ( at least one of them, that is). It is quite an interesting analogy we could draw here: the fairies have their own puppets such as these half vampires on one hand, and the authority has its own puppets such as werewolves. Keeping Sookie safe and making sure she is "harvested" within a pure fairy context for the sake of having the upper hand of the battle against the vampires could be Claudine's purpose. Again, I am just speculating. But I am more and more convinced that Claudine wanted Sookie's ( now certainly not biological) parents dead. Fairies are rapists, as far as we know from Bill in Season 3...meh... i hope more people contribute to this :) cheers

@McLebanese REALLY good questions! We forget that what we "see" of Fae are what they present, but that in fact they are quite hideous. But, at the same time, a vampire hunting for fae blood would know "what smells so delicious". So hmmm. ? And her parents - I think you're right, I don't recall either appearing to be special. How was she then? BUT, remember her grandfather was - Granddaddy Earl. Maybe you're onto something here? Or, maybe we just don't know how they are special. IF the vamp WAS fae turned vamp, and they would know what "smelled so good", then that could make sense why it would be (see my inexplicable hunch below) Jason's band-aid they were seeking. Perhaps their parents were two different types of specials? argh! So intriguing. Great questions!

@Bmonkey if you are referring to when Eric asked Bill what he was doing, Bill said "evolving," before taking a sip of his glass of blood.

What were the last words that Bill whispered to Eric around the conference table???

The vampire attacking Sookie's parents must Be family related to her by blood. This being the reason why she feels and sees with him.In the books the parents were nulles by a fairy cousin who got crazy after a curse.
Also In the books a werewolf is Turned into a vampire. Could a fairy be turned as well ??

I think each episode gets better and better. I hated to see the guardian go so fast. I did enjoy looking at that body. But i love Eric and Bill together and Pam and a character i was ready to see go Tara turned around. Tara as a vamper makes her more interesting. The big women could be Hoyts mama dont sleep on her she hates vamps too! And omg Alcide Alcide Alcide if that aint the finest dam wolf in town. Canr wait till next week!
