@Aaron Busch: I wouldn't say it was canceled. Sure, Shonda Rhimes had basically given up, but according to her Tweet; ABC and herself came to a mutual agreement to end it. This to me is an equal decision from both parties, therefore it is ending on it's own terms.

Private Practice is now CANCELLED. Agree? Disagree? It doesn't matter what you think because most of the time, these Networks won't hear it. They see you as a statistic, not a Viewer. Despite that, Viewers SHOULD have better input on what truly deserves a place on Television. Otherwise, we end up with shows like CSI: Miami and Harry's Law being replaced with Reality TV that has us scratching our heads. After all, these Networks wouldn't be in business without YOU.

I didn't even know Castle had a short order season. Pleasant surprise :-)

Shonda Rhimes tweeted months ago that Grey's was renewed for 24 episodes, so this isn't really a surprise.
In regards to Modern and Middle, they normally receive a 24 episode order and I'm positive it was announced that they had received 24 episodes months prior.
Overall, it's hardly a surprise and when I first heard about the news, I assumed they had gotten 26 episodes each - which would probably be smarter seeing as Grey's and Modern are the highest rated drama and comedy ABC has to date and has had since both shows launched in 2005 and 2009, respectively.
