Beauty and the Beast Review: Not So Grotesque After All

by at . Comments

Maybe my expectations for the Beauty and The Beast pilot were set too low based on all the early reviews calling it one of the worst premieres of the season, but I didn't think it was that bad.

In fact, I thought it was pretty good.

Beauty and the Beast Premiere Pic

Beauty and The Beast is in The CW's sweet spot: beautiful people in ridiculous or supernatural (or both!) situations with sexy undertones and emotionally stirring music that makes you totally buy in to their world of questionable plots and lustful glances.

Vincent Keller, "The Beast," is part of an experimental military genetics program? And he's a scientific genius? AND he's hot 99% of the time except when his adrenaline kicks in? Yup, it's a CW show through and through. As long as you're aware of that tuning in, I see only good things in your future.

Quick disclaimer: I've never seen the original Beauty and The Beast TV show that aired back in the late 80's, so I'm not judging this "remake" by i's predecessor. Great. Moving on.

Jay Ryan, most recently seen in the ill-fated Terra Nova, does a great job filling that much beloved role of the brooding CW supernatural hunk. He's not at Ian Sommerhalder's level, but let's face it, no one is. His transformation into the beast (is it a proper noun? Should it be The Beast?) was a little goofy and reminded me of Twilight, which, for the record, is never a compliment.

Kirsten Kreuk of Smallville fame is more believable in her role as a detective than I thought possible. That fight scene on the subway platform was impressive, but I did think it was pretty funny that Vincent only saved her once she had beaten the bad guys mostly to death.

Ironically, the most ridiculous thing about the premiere wasn't the whole "Beauty and the Beast" plot but the "murder of the week" storyline. Using cosmetics to kill and frame people? It's just like the plot of Catwoman! Which, for the record, is also never a compliment.

Beauty and The Beast has the makings of a classic CW show. There's lots for the network's legions of die hard fans to love and lust after here.

What did you think? Grade the premiere now:

I was a fan of the original series in the 80's and was really excited when I first heard about this show. After watching the pilot, I was instantly addicted! It is almost nothing like the original series, but such a compelling story...you can't stop watching. It's a star-crossed romance with a supernatural twist. Add some funny supporting characters, dash of cop drama, a secret government agency and you have a really great show! I am saddened by the negative reviews I've read about BATB that all seem to be written by men. Don't be afraid of a little romance boys...imagine what your real lives would be like without it. ;)

I think this show will tank because they are trying so hard to make, as you said, a twilight out of B&TB and it was never that. I think they are demeaning their audience by leaving out common knowledge police dialogue/procedures, and making their actors look bad in the process. Nobody says "the writers suck" they say "that actor sucks" which is sad because just a quick look at "Lana" and you know that Kirsten is worth better writing because she can do much better.

I came here to see what other people were thinking about this show. I JUST started watching it online and I've gotten through two episodes. What's funny to me is that I have no law enforcement background other than watching shows like CSI and Bones. I have been able to poke holes through this shows story line. I could accept the new take on the "beast" (even though c'mon Vincent in the original you found yourself creeped out that you thought he was hot and was jealous of Catherine. I absolutely adored Smallville! The second I started watching this I squealed "OMG ITS LANA!!!" But then I kept finding myself rolling my eyes at how incompetent the writing was. "hello? hello...i have a warrant...." or even the epic fight scene where she never pronounces herself as a police officer until someone says they'll call the cops. During the moment where she's staring down the woman she should have been saying something like "blah blah police department stand down" I think this show will tank because they are trying so hard to make, as you said, a twilight out of B&TB and it was never that.

I love this show. I grew up with the 80's original and I can honestly say this version is in no way shape or for similar to the original. The 80's version The beast lived in the tunnels under the city, communicated with the pipes and morose code, had entrances in practically every building's basement, could feel every time cat was in distress, and he would go charging off just to jump on and ride on top of a moving subway to save Cat. Vincent loved reading stories to the many homeless families living with him and his doctor dad. Basically the first one was very cheesy. This new version is more realistic. They toughened Cat up made her a detective instead of the layer she was in the original. Plus the fact they son't make Vincent a beast 24/7 is in my opinion the best move they made. It keeps the Disney element out of it, but if you have to look at it this way even in the end of the Disney version he is human anyway in the end. This is one show I will be watching each week.

I completely ignore everything i said during the summer. I thought most of the new CW shows sounded stupid but i have actually quite enjoyed the pilots of this show and Emily Owens MD; not had chance to watch arrow yet. Having said that i do miss secret circle and wish it had never been cancelled.

O and i forgot to mention that the fight scene in the subway totally rocked honestly one of the best fight scene's i saw on television in a long time!

I actually really enjoyed this episode and so what if he doesn't look like a beast 24/7 he looked pretty creepy to me when he chased catherine away lol I'm definitely tuning in next week.

ok i thought this was gonna suck so bad but i was pleasantly surprised! sure it's not as promising as arrow but if you set aside a few cheesy scenes the story was good too.I'm gonna tune in next week.

Beauty and the Beast Season 1 Episode 1 Quotes

Vargas:This is where he lives? A chemical plant?
Cat: He's a researcher, maybe he works from home?
Vargas: Or maybe it's a meth lab.
Cat: Just my type.

Everyone told me it was just a coyote or a bear. This thing I thought I had seen was just a result of my concussion or post traumatic stress. No, the men who killed my mother were beasts. I believed them. Until now.
