Hawaii Five-0 Review: All Aboard the USS Bromance

For all of us who have enjoyed the "bromance" moments and the "carguments" over the last three seasons, this week’s Hawaii Five-0 episode gave us something we have been hoping for for a while. Steve and Danny. Hanging out. Just the two of them.

Of course, given that the time they spent together included being boat-jacked, stranded at sea in a sinking dingy, chased by sharks and finding a crime scene at sea, maybe they want to actually relax a bit next time. Still, you have to admit the two of them on the ocean created some of the best Hawaii Five-0 quotes we've enjoyed this year.

McGarrett and Danny On A Boat

Long time viewers know that Danny has not been a big fan of the ocean. Learning that Danny's childhood friend drowned trying to help him explained a lot about his dislike, but also some nice info about Danny himself.

This was one of the first glimpses we've had into Danny’s childhood. I hope we get a few more. We know a lot about Steve, while Kono and Chin talk about being kids fairly often. The same can't be said for this snarky character.

I’m also thrilled that this installment was better put together than the last episode. The pacing was well done, action was consistent - and watching Kono take down Scates and then handcuff him to the rail was pretty awesome. My only confusion was Catherine coming along with Chin and Kono to raid Scates’ apartment.

When did Catherine join Five-0? Why would a Navy communication officer have a bullet proof vest and gun to wear off duty to a crime scene? I can see an ex-Navy Seal like Steve having that type of gear, but Catherine is not a Seal... unless I missed her being reassigned.

The irony is that Michelle Borth fit right in with Kono and Chin and would make a great addition to the team. Except for that whole sleeping with Steve thing, which might be awkward around the office the next day.

Finally, how long did it take Lost fans to recognize the actress playing Katie Burgess as Cynthia Watros, who played Libby? It was good to see another former Lost alumni on the show – albeit briefly. Speaking of on the show again, here's hoping that Steve’s mom returns soon, as I really want to see more of Doris McGarrett in action.

Speaking of guest stars from Heroes, Lost, and TR...how about another guest from Moonlight? We had Jordan Belfi die in front of Alex again, so how about Jason D. (aka Josef) being his snarky self once more? He could compete with Scott! LOL. Or Eric could play an ADA. Come on CBS.

Now if they only would kill off mama (has no place in the show and keep the girlfrined at home)it would be the good show again. Sorry to see mama coming back. D & Mcgarrett work together in a boat as good as they do in a car. And yes, Scott C is a nice guy. Worked with him on American Outlaw in Texas.

HFO has gone from one of my favorite shows to almost unwatchable in 3 episodes. i usually love danno’s sarcasm and cynicism but this week he was totally overboard (no pun intended). the producers/writers are doing with catherine exactly what they did with Lori - forcing the character onto the show without a purpose. in some scenes she didn't even have any lines - she just stood there. and being in the navy doesn't make her qualified to run down criminals with the team - she's not a cop, she's steve's girlfriend (sort of)! she’s great as a guest star, but not a regular. they've already added christine lahti as a strong female character, and her story arc has a purpose. they need to just leave it at that.

Danny needs to stop his constant whining and b*tching, I would have killed him and blamed it the villian!! Man up, Danny!! Stop sounding like a housewife with PMS!

Everytime I watch the show it makes me miss living there. I lived in Kaneohe for about a year and the highlight of my time there was when I walked into "Pinky's" and saw Scott Caan sitting at a booth eating lunch. He was kind enough to let me snap a cellphone pic and I used it as proof that I had actually met him hehe. It was totally cool and he was very nice. I will never forget it.

This was a really good episode, I enjoyed it. It had lots of good moments. I wondered why Chin would attack Kono like that about Adam, but I think it's because he doesn't want to lose anyone else, and rightfully so. Loved the scenes between Steve and Danny even if Danny sounded like a nagging wife, lol. I'm sure I'm in the minority in this, but there is one thing that is really annoying me, and that's Catherine. Three episodes in and I'm still wondering what purpose she serves as a season regular besides getting info for Steve by using her connections. I'm sure Steve has other connections he can use. It's just really stupid for her to be around just to look after/look for his mother. And when she went with Kono and Chin with a bulletproof vest on and a gun to the suspect's house? So ridiculous. I did appreciate her concern for the boys though. I actually hope we see more development for her and better stories. Even Lori had somewhat more of a purpose, even if she was very unpopular. I know she's supposed to bring out the softer side in Steve, but I've barely seen that so far. But I suppose this is just the third episode.

Continue Catherine worried about the boys was a good way of using Cath in this episode and I didn't have a problem with Catherine coming along with Chin and Kono--at that point, they all were worried about their friends . But once the boys were back Catherine was no where to be seen until the Ohana moment at the end. Chin looking at his wedding pic aww. I like that the show has Chin still grieving over Malia because no one gets over the death of a loved one that quickly. And I love that Chin still needs to take care of his cousin. Chin still don’t trust Adam which I understand he safed Kono but he also pointed a gun to her head looking forward how this will continue. The Ohana moment at the end was adorable. Love these moments.
Perfect balance between the main charaters keep this up writers!!

I enjoyed this episode very much. Can someone give Steve a award how he can put up with Danny yelling and complaining all the time OMG! I love how calm Steve stays when Danny is in his yelling mood. I think Danny is the only one who can ask Steve about his personal life his mom and girlfriend Cath and in the middle of the ocean Steve could walked away from it perfect timing from Danny he knows Steve needs a woman in his life and that that person is Cath. The look on Danny face when Steve said she isn’t my girlfriend or we only have a thing says enough.
But at some point I can see Steve commitment and trust issues will bring some tension in this relationship. What happened with Danny’s friend was really sad and I understand his hate for the ocean now was so cute of Steve to toasts at the memory of Danny's childhood friend. At the end. I will never ship them as a couple but their friendship is amazing. Catherine worried about the boys was a good way of using Cath in this episode and I didn't have a problem with Catherine coming along with Chin and Kono--at that point, they all were worried about their friends . But once the boys were back Catherine was no where to be seen until the Ohana moment at the end.

Hawaii Five-0 Season 3 Episode 3 Quotes

Steve: Set the Hook!
Danny: Stop the backseat fishing!

Steve: Time out, I thought the mission today was to get you your first tuna
Danny: Why does everything have to be a mission?
Steve: . The goal was to help you catch an Ahi.
Danny: There's no goal, there's no mission; we're just fishing. We have a couple of laughs, maybe we catch a fish, maybe we don't
