Hawaii Five-0 Review: A Very Cold March

at . Comments

"Kanalua:" Doubt.

Know that I don’t say this lightly: This was one of the worst episodes of Hawaii Five-0 I have ever watched. After last week’s stellar Season 3 opening I’m absolutely appalled at how this episode went down.

I'll explain why...

August March: After waiting months for the return of Ed Asner as August March, I’m most disgusted with how his departure was designed. This is a man who has always thought two steps ahead of two generations of cops. Yet he decides to punch his own ticket by stepping into traffic. Seriously?!? Why were there not cops escorting him? Why was he allowed to just step out of the car on the passenger side and stroll across the grass into the path of a truck? Come on!

Catherine Getting Info: I’m all for Catherine using her feminine charms to get stuff from guys, that’s to be expected from the hotness that is Michelle Borth. But what self-respecting Naval Officer is going to hack into the WITSEC computer database by stealing the password from some poor schmuck in a bar?

Catherine Helps McGarrett

Ridiculous Computer Security: Speaking of getting info from some poor schmuck at a bar. First, the Government requires numbers, letters and a special character in all of their passwords. Second, I can tell you that none of my passwords have anything do with my childhood pet, family street or anything to do with me growing up. So between those two things, you are not going to hack a government database by asking a guy his life story over pool and randomly plugin random words he said.

Muddled Case: From the art theft, to the suspect dying, to the getaway driver being murdered, to it all leading to a kidnapping... it was just too much. I wasn't attached to the art, or the car driver, and only cared about the girl because she was a kid. Hell, I never even figured out what August went to ask the fence for since he was the one who shot the brothers with the same gun he used last time. Add to that mix Chin Ho dealing with Malia’s death and Catherine stealing government passwords, and it becomes one giant pile of what I like to call "A Hot Mess."

Speaking of Chin Ho, the only decent part of this episode was Chin-Ho’s dealing with Malia’s death. The funeral was beautiful, and then he and Danny talking at the end was a great moment. I was glad to see Danny step-up and be a friend and family for Chin-Ho; if anyone knows how alone he might feel it would be Danny.

But in the end, one good portion of an episode can not offset all the bad. Oh, and don’t even get me started on Kamekona new "venture" or the  lift and thrust ratios of the average touring helicopter – we will be here for days! GAH!

Here is hoping that next week we get back to a decent story plot and we get more information on Doris still being on the island. For now, I’m going to see if I can find some brain bleach to wash this episode from my mind.

@George Where did you got the info about that Reiko Ayelsworth was so fed up of not having any role in most episodes that she asked the producers to kill her character off this is new for me. And will you please STOP!! with all the racial comments you did it last week and now again it's getting annoying and ridiculous.

It is a bit sad that they showed more of Malia dead than alive in the past few months. I guess we will be hearing about her more now that she is dead and Chin Ho Kelly will find it very difficult to get over it. However, in real life what happened was Reiko Ayelsworth was so fed up of not having any role in most episodes that she asked the producers to kill her character off. They have already killed off two romantic Asian possibilities for Chin Ho Kelly. In the fist season, I believe Kelly Hu's character was finished off and in the beginning of the third, Malia was killed off. According to the grapevine Asian-Asian romance does not sell. For that matter black-black romance only sells to black audience. Evidence clearly indicates that white male-Asian female romance does not sell either. That is why Priya (Aarti Maan's character) was pushed out of Big Bang Theory. Ratings fell for every episode that Priya was the romantic interest of one of the main actors. The only inter-racial couple that really sold to the American audience was black male-Asian female..in Grey's Anatomy..Isiah Washington and Sandra Oh. During that period, it had the top ratings. Had Isiah Washington not gone on his anti-gay rantings he might have married Sandra Oh's character and Grey's Anatomy will still be on top of the list. Someone said Asians are invisible in Hollywood...Hawaii Five 0 takes that invisibility to new heights...literal invisibility.

Dude everyone I know in the word use a pet name or their wife/kid/ someone name as their password

(Cont) All in all, it was just OK for me. It seems many really liked it which may bode well for ratings. So, thats good because I know the show can do better than this when firing on all cylinders. For me, it just wasnt last night. All the awards to DDK, though.

This episode for me was just...meh. Not the worst, but nowhere close to the best. It may have satisfied as a mid-season filler ep but it was a disappointment as the 2nd of the season. A couple of scenes really stood out for me... (1) the opening - it was beautiful and I may have screamed Nooooooo when they shifted to the crime of the week (btw...promo fotos teased a Danny Kono conversation by the cars while dressing after the funeral that I assume got cut. Thats a shame) (2) the cousins at HQ. (3) Undercover!Kono is always a win for me and (4) Danny and Chin on the beach.
I hated the whole crime of the week this epi- unnecessarily convoluted and I wish they could have saved August March for another epi later in the season when there was less other stuff that really needed some attention because he is a great criminal. Last, I guess we assume Kono has no residual effects from her near murder/drowning and Im left wondering if the team even cares who pulled her out of the deep blue sea.
All in all, just OK. DDK saved this one for me. Of course, these are just my personal thoughts. It seems that many others liked it. I really hope the ratings are good because I love the show and want to keep watching for a long while.

(cont.)...Chin's situation is still heartbreaking. The ceremony at the beginning was beautiful, I wish they would have showed a little more, and Danny comforting Chin at the end was great. Both of them showed the emotions that you would expect. Both great actors. As for Kamekona, isn't he suppose to be played as someone trying to get to the next big payoff. That is exactly what you would expect from him. I think that might even lead us to another appearance by Jimmy Buffett, which I would love. Next week looks good, but I'm sure all those are ready to rip that one apart as well.

I agree that the ease that Catherine had hacking into a computer was way too easy. A lot of WITSEC witnesses would be dead if it was that easy. However, I liked this show very much. I agree the opener was better. Many people were complaining about the crime of the week. Well it was there and the core 4 handled it. Catherine out on her own was great, should have eased those that think she is going to interfere with 5-0. Her place right now is clearly helping Steve with figuring out Mama's moves. Loved the blue corvette, and getting info by using a little sex appeal is what you would expect from a crime show. (cont.)

I loved this episode. Steve and Danny were awesome. Loved all the action, loved the car chase with the bus, loved the art case. The ceremony for Malia was perfect, and vintage H50, and I loved Danny's scene with Chin at the end. The team dynamic was back in force this episode. Loved, loved, loved it.

Any fan of HFO knows that August March is not dead. Those weren't his remains. As Steve said, he is always 2 steps ahead of the game. He will show up again later on down the road. Poor Chin. Max was funny. Danny needs a new outfit. Still love him though. Too easy for Cath to hack into computer. Glad that they went back to the crime of the week format but the crime could have been better. I like crimes that involve international intrigue.

Well I loved it. I am a fan from Europe, great fan. And don't worry about the ratings, ratings for episode one leaped 44% !!!! thanks to DVR.

Hawaii Five-0 Season 3 Episode 2 Quotes

Danny: Going to need a vest, vest please.
Steve: You don't even know what my plan is.
Danny: This is true, but I know you, and any plan you have will involve me and serious bodily harm.
Steve: What are you talking about?
Danny: What I'm talking about, is that over the years our marriage has become predictable.

Steve: Catherine, I want you to help me find my mom.
Catherine: I thought you told Witness Protection you wanted kept secret even from you.
Steve: Yeah, that was before I found out she had a chance to kill Wo Fat and let him get away.
