Once Upon a Time Round Table: "The Crocodile"

at . Comments

While last week's Once Upon a Time episode was all about ogres and evil queens, "The Crocodile" took a different turn, leaving Emma, Snow and Cora in its wake.

Below, our TV Fanatic Round Table team of Jim Garner, Nick McHatton and Christine Orlando band together to decide whether Rumplestiltskin and Belle have a chance at romance and debate which fairy tale character deserves to be the focus of his/her own episode.

What was your favorite scene from the episode?
Jim: I loved watching Belle's reaction when she walked into the library, followed by Rumple being brave and telling her the truth. You could tell Belle recognized his small baby step forward.

Nick: Hook's line to Cora about sparkly dirt, and, of course, getting to meet Captain Hook overall.

Christine: Definitely Rumple asking Charming for dating advice. It was unexpected, sweet and funny all at once - and Charming's answer was just perfect.

Once Upon a Time RT - depreciated -

Did you miss Emma, Snow, and/or Regina in this episode?
Jim: I realized we hadn't seen them, but I didn't miss them. It helps the stories be stronger when you're not required to show every character, as you can focus on telling a great arc with the characters that are there.

Nick: Like Jim, I eventually realized that they weren't in the episode, and I did miss them; however, there was still plenty of enjoy from the episode.

Christine: Honestly, I didn't realize they hadn't had one scene until the very end. I love Emma, Snow and Regina but the rest of the ensemble was so strong that I never miss them. That's the sign of a great show.

Knowing how Rumplestiltskin was betrayed, does it change how you feel about him?
Jim: Oh come on, who HASN'T been betrayed? Seems like the formula for a bad guy is to take someone with a horrible heartbreak and give them unlimited power. Both Regina and Rumple went from being nice people to complete bastards. Apparently the old saying about power corrupting is true.

Nick: It rounds his character well, and while I feel for him I don't exactly care about him as a character.

Christine: Okay, maybe it's a girl thing then... but I love Rumple. He's the bad boy you hope will make good even when the thinking part of your brain knows it's probably not going to happen. Yet, somehow knowing that he wasn't always so power hungry and evil gives me a glimmer of hope for his redemption.

Do you think Belle and Rumple will last as a couple?
Jim: I would love to say yes, but this is Rumple we are talking about. Unless he lets love break his curse and remove his powers, he's going to end up riding the evil train all the way to hell.

Nick: In the end, maybe, but as they are right now, no.

Christine: Oh, the romantic in me wants to believe it. They are so darn cute together. But the cynic in me knows the odds are long... very, very long.

Which character would you like to see as the focus of an episode?
Jim: Is an Ariel/Little Mermaid out of the question? We've gotten a few of the Princesses; it would be nice to round out the set.

Nick: Mulan.

Christine: I want more Ruby! She's turning into such a kick ass, take charge character in Storybrooke and I really want to know more about how the "wolf thing" works there.

I want Rumple and Belle to have a happy ending - they deserve one. And we, the fans, who have devoted so much to them and this show - deserve one. I will feel very cheated and very upset that come the end of this show - whenever that may be -- that they did not get a happy ending. I would be very hesitant to watch another show by this same team if they did that to their fans.

1)I liked Belle's scene in the mine. Rumple rescuing her was just awesome!
2)Eeehm...No.I love Rumple-centric episodes! Hope we'll get one for his background with Regina!
3)I don't think my love for Rumple can reach any new levels. I adore the guy and i was rooting for him through every moment of the episode. Yes...even when he killed Milla. That is a very logical outcome when anger, pain and great, uncontrollable power are combined.
4)Yes! She is so going to break his curse! I know things will get pretty bad between them, Rumple's going to scr@@ up millions of times, but Belle's faith in Rumple will prevail!!!
5)I'm hoping for a Mulan&Philip background, definetely a Peter Pan sl and another trip to Wonderland!

Sorry, I was cut off. Charming and Gold are hysterical together, they seem to understand each other a bit. I would love for them to align with Regina against Hook and Cora. Also the thought of Belle with Hook is nauseating. I am not a Hooker at all. He was way too over hyped. Jefferson and August are much better characters. Apparently he is eye candy, but not much of an actor. He was boring for me. He came off as a jerk. Rumple may be bad, but he is a rock star. Also, I wish someone would point out to Rumple, he did have a brave moment. When he killed the dark one, he was scared, but he did it to save Bae, so he was not a coward at that moment. He was able to summon his courage.

Why do people think just because Rumple is evil he can't be redeemed and doesn't deserve a happy ending. We saw this with Spike on Buffy. If you write a character that has redeemable traits, they can choose a different path. Rumple was not always evil, and I disagree with Jim, he is not a complete bastard. He does love Bae, he does love Belle. Also, Mr Gold shows at times with Charming, Hopper and Emma he likes them and respects them. He is like anyone with a drug addiction, they hurt the ones closest to them. I think he is redeemable and I think he and Belle should be together, maybe not now, the journey will be angst filled, but in the end they should be. That is why I watch the show, I want them all to have a happy ending. That is why we love fairytales. Do I have to have it now? No, but I would be very upset if at the end of the series Snow/Charming, Belle/Rumple/Bae, Emma/?, Regina/? didn't find happiness and redemption. I really like the chemistry between Gold and Charming. They understand each other, they make a hilarious duo. I also think someone should point out to Rumple, he did have the courage to defeat the dark one for his son. He didn't realize the price, but in that moment he was NOT a coward. He had the courage to stab him. I am hoping that comes into play at some point. It may be the realization of that, that could turn him. He did have his brave moment.

.....I am not a fan of Rumple or Belle. I'm tired of Rumple being several characters and Belle...she just isn't the Belle I'm used to. I would LOVE for them to delve into Mulan's back story; she has always been my favorite Disney heroine, but they should do another Ruby/Red episode, especially since she's becomming a bigger part. I think they could reasonably add in Rapunzel and I think it would be easier to explain than Ariel (not that they couldn't do it). But I want them to find Thomas, Cinderella's prince. He disapeared, Charming said they would find him, and then that was it.

Favorite scene
Darming mining away in a wife beater. Those biceps are to die for.
Emma, Snow, Regina
I do miss them, moreso Emma and Snow, but I was too wrapped up in Ruby's badassery to dwell too much on it.
Rumpel's past
I have to agree with Jim here. Everyone in Storybrook faced something terrible in their lives. Showing their past makes for a better character, but it doesn't change the fact that they chose to be evil and can't just magically unchose that path of life.
I think that Belle has a major Stockholm Syndrome. And she definitely falls for the incorrigible men in the naive hopes of changing them. And even Rumpel knows he has a magic addiction. It's a recipe for disaster, but I for one want to see it played out.

Pitty for Rumple? NO!!!! Not at all. He and Regina are great characters (and played by great actors) and they should remain front and center in this story, but they are evil. No happy ending for them!!! Frankly, I hope Belle falls in love with Captain Hook, so Rumple can lose two women to him.

I ADORE Belle and Rumple. Why isn't there more of them? I'm a hue fan of Tinkerbell too. It would be an interesting twist to include her. The dwarfes seem to have taken the place of the Lost Boys. I'd say the stranger is Peter Pan? Oh, who really cares, just give us more RumBelle
