Arrow Review: Hiding In Plain Sight

at . Comments

Another week in Starling City, another shocker. Actually, "Muse of Fire" gave us more than just one new bad guy.

It introduced viewers to a possible love interest; an identity reveal; and the early stages of a full out mob war. Somebody is targeting the associates of the Bertinelli crime family, who ever could it be?

Oliver on a Date

When Moira is shot for standing with someone who owed the Bertinelli crime family, Oliver is determined to take that person down. So determined, in fact, that he leaves his own mother lying and bleeding in the street to try and get a glimpse of the license plate.

I know he was doing it to seek justice for his mother, but as Diggle told him sometimes you need to be a little emotional and stay in the moment, maybe hold your mom's hand until the EMTs get there.

As Moira told Thea, I think people often forget that Oliver was living on a deserted island for five years. One with the Mandarin name for "purgatory." Oliver's social and emotional skills need adjustment. Then again, he probably won't ever be able to relate to people the way he did before.

I just think we need to stop judging him for the Oliver he was and start accepting him for the Oliver he is. | permalink

This actually reminds me of Emily Thorne's quest for justice on Revenge. While she may have a childhood love for whom she still harbors feelings, after everything she's gone through, she's going to be compatible with a completely different type of person now. That brings me back to Arrow and the Huntress.

Not to upset the Laurel/Ollie shippers, but I am really feeling Oliver and Helena. They are both vigilantes in their own way. It was evident from the moment they had dinner and she asked if there were parts of the island he missed. Not many people would ever think to ask that, nor would they think there was anything appealing about being on a deserted island. It was obvious she was a little darker from the get go. It looks like everybody's family has their drama.

Truthfully, I watched this episode twice and went back and looked at clips on YouTube after John Barrowman was revealed to be Mr. Merlyn. I'm sure a lot of you predicted it, but I was really wowed for a minute there. So the Queens and the Merlyns are both caught up in things they shouldn't be, which makes sense considering they are both very powerful business families with shady secrets.

Were you expecting that to be Barrowman's identity?

The question now is where does this leave Tommy with his father? What exactly was Mr. Merlyn trying to convince Moira when he creepily visited her in bed? Also, do you think a full out war will emerge now that The Chinese Triad is being blamed for the Bertinelli shootings? It sure looks that way.

Last, but certainly not least, what did you think of the introduction of The Huntress? Do you agree she and Oliver have chemistry?

Excellent episode! @stepphie59 - While certain things about comic book characters can be altered for an ongoing tv series, there are some absolutes that cannot be changed. One of these is changing the names of characters and giving them different identities than what is portrayed in the comics. Laurel Lance is Black Canary and Helena Bertinelli is the Huntress. Switching them around would be like turning Clark Kent into Batman, and Bruce Wayne into Superman. You DON'T do that. Period. What can be done is change the nature of Laurel's and Helena's relationships with Oliver Queen.

i really liked this episode !
the revelation that that evil guy was tommy's dad didn't really do much for me but maybe it will be significant later !
i liked helena ,however i think that her relationship with oliver won't work out considering that she doesn't hesitate to kill and all !
But it is an interesting relationship ,a hell of a lot more than his relationship with laurel !

Strawberry fields

Oh yeah, hello Helena. Nice introduction, that was awesome. I like her a lot and her chemistry with Oliver is really working for me. Probably because I really believed both of them when they said that being honest with someone felt good. I like Tommy even more after the last two episodes. Diggle is still the man. Thea can be really sweet and a little annoying sometimes, but I like the fact that she has her own opinions and she's not just a filler of space.

Moira didn't get shot, only the mob guy did.

Having been a fan of John Barrowman on Dr Who and Torchwood, I have to say that I am thrilled to see him on Arrow, playing a devilish character who is so charming yet so evil...and full of secrets. And I love that Oliver is now involved with the Huntress, I do think that they have a lot in common and could do some serious bad-ass stuff around the city together, fighting crime. Laurel is going to end up with broke-arse Tommy, who should be a better person for actually having to work for his keep now. I just hope he doesn't use her and end up cheating on her and breaking her heart. I think Oliver was right when he said that if Tommy hurts her he'd break his neck. And yes, of course one of the highlights of the show is sweaty Oliver without his shirt, showing off those delicious abs. Nothing wrong with a little beefcake on TV. IMHO.

Bit of romance With Oliver That will be nice.Looking forward to that love the show Not even half way through the episodes here in the Uk

I am really happy the they decided to put another love interest to oliver, i like helena character and the chemestry with oliver was much bigger that with laurel. I have only one complain and is that the writers are taking the story TOO FAST!!!! i mean in one episode introduces a character , make them conect with each other, then he discover her secret, , he cuestion his feelings about her ( really?? he had just met her), they fight together, he reveals his secret, and finaly they kiss
cmoon !!!! why couldt make it in 2 or maybe 3 episodes and give it a little bit of mistery you have an entire season to develop the characters and the story why the rush if they take things slowly i think that this show will be even more great

While I didn't realize that my boredom warranted a response - yes, I bore easily. I'm also easily entertained and amused. Oh well. Helena Bertinelli is the Huntress. She won't be Black Canary.

@joyeful, seems you bore easily. Anyhow, are you sure the producers aren't going to make Helena the Black Canary? Maybe they were taking the show one way, but when they saw that some people don't like Laurel for some reason, they may decide to take it another way. And besides, I myself can't see Laurel as anything but a lawyer/reporter. If they had introduced her early as the Black Canary, maybe then. But now for me it's too late to do so. I don't think I will find it believable.

★★★☆☆TV I was intrigued enough by Helena. Why won't they flesh out the characters. Thea , Moira, Diggle, and (New)Oliver really need more. Laurel and Tommy can run off together. Still the hour wasn't as disappointing as the last few. .,

Arrow Season 1 Episode 7 Quotes

I think it's easy to forget that he lived apart from civilization for five years.

Maybe you should spend a little less time trying to be a hero, you're obviously not very good at it.
