Castle Review: Meet The Parents

by at . Comments

Castle returned this week with "After Hours," an episode that took Castle and Beckett on the run with a witness and spent some quality time between two parents. Let’s discuss the latest hour of our favorite detective show, shall we?

The weekly case centered around the witness to a murder of a priest, who was involved with a mob family and informants.

Castle Hiding Out

The case jumped all over the place, from having Castle and Beckett hiding with the witness... to Castle getting picked up by a mob boss... to Kate being taken hostage. Although this installment made for some great one-liners, the hour felt a little less than par when it came to Castle standards.

The eighth episode of Castle Season 5 brought out a few TV veteran guest stars that are always welcome on my screen. Tony Denison and Patrick Fischler were perfect in their roles as the mob boss and creepy killer, respectively. Fischler just looks the part, right?

Castle and Beckett attempted to have dinner with Martha and Jim, Kate’s father. You would think this would go well. Not so much. It was a little awkward to begin with, but as expected, the parents were quite friendly by the end of the hour.

Kudos to the writing staff for continuing this relationship in an adult way. The couple has been together for some time now and meeting the family is normal. That is one of the best parts about this series. Although it is quite absurd at times, there are always realistic moments drilled into each episode.

After Thoughts:

  • Ryan and Esposito have such a great bromance. Both characters were on fire in “After Hours,” providing some of the best Castle quotes of the episode.
  • Gates is definitely softening up on Castle.
  • Are Rick and Kate’s backgrounds too different to move forward?

Overall, an entertaining episode. It jumped around just a bit too much, but the real Castle feel was back. This was very welcome considering the previous episode’s documentary style filming

What did you think, TV Fanatics? Did you enjoy “After Hours” or was it a bit of a let down? The series has been on a roll the majority of Season 5. Was this hour up to par or did it fall short?

Later this week, make sure to check out the Castle Round Table while we patiently wait TWO weeks until the next new Castle episode. Until then!

All phones can be used to call 911, locked or not. As a detective, she should know that. Even Castle should know that. Also, about the cab driver, really, she can't just tell him to call 911 right away. Other than that, the show is ok

I know that someone mentioned that Kate relies too heavily on Castle and perhaps that might be so in the way that she leans on him for support but in this eppisode we saw Kate doubt every single hairbrained idea that Caste had :) But still he accomplished every task he set out to do. He unlocked the phone, rewired the radio and it wasn't until the end of the eppisode that she finally let go and trusted that Castle would save the day. Beautiful eppisode as always !

Glad Kate questions their relationship. I feel the writers are making her rely to much on Castle. She was so more independent in the first 4 seasons. I noticed in "Swan Song", Castle made her question the the band leader by her self in front of the documentary camera. So she could "strut her stuff". I guess falling in love makes you rely more on your partner. I agree Gates is softening up to Castle. But he better replace that doll he broke of Gates! Thought "After Hours" was the best! never thought the little witness was the killer. If Castle and Beckett have a baby in about 3 seasons from now it should be a girl and name her Johanna after Becketts daar Mom. Cant wait to see Martha date Jim.

DeAnn - Reading your comment is like reading my mind. It voices a reality sensed by those who have taken the time to take a deeper look at all things Castle. For the past 5 Seasons we have seen healthy fiction. This episode caught "The Rhythm of Love" we so loved before. Castle allows you to enjoy viewing a murder mystery without the need to stress & try to solve it. It is more about enjoying the journey.
Castle & Beckett's relationship in this episode denotes respectful interaction between two people in love - getting their rhythm - emphasizing their individuality. Caskett - two imperfect people perfect for each other.
I second the motion - hope for marriage & CASTLE BABIES - TWIN BOYS - BELIEVE IN THE POSSIBILITY OF MAGIC :)

Loving Season 5. No complaints on any of them. Great fun watching Caskett work out their relationship dance. Going to be many moments, questions, doubts, especially with these two characters. Always quality stuff from Andrew Marlowe and Company (writers, producers, directors, actors, staging, costume, hair, makeup, lighting, camera, etc ). You guys rock!

I loved this episode! I found last weeks docmentary style episode painful, because of how they acted when they knew they were on camera. (Good acting, just painful to watch.) Loved seeing Caskett bickering, because it's so human. Loved when Kate threw her arms over Rick's head. Brought tears to my eyes. It was also pretty cool to see Jim Beckett and Martha take a dislike to each other, but totally forget that when they were concerned about Rick and Kate. I wish Jim Beckett was on much more than he has been. I like the actor and he is so totally right for the part. He brought on my tears when Kate was shot by how he asked for her at the hospital. I'd managed not to cry until then, but that man can act! Love this show. My favorite!
