Gossip Girl Round Table: "Where the Vile Things Are"

by at .

Welcome back, once again, to TV Fanatic's weekly Gossip Girl Round Table Q&A discussion! Below, our panelists break down all aspects of this week's Gossip Girl, "Where the Vile Things Are."

In our Q&A session, TVF editor Steve Marsi and staff members Christina Tran, Leigh Raines and Courtney Morrison share their opinions on everything that went down on the Upper East Side.

Weigh in with your take on the following topics after reading ours!

-------------------------------

1. Favorite quote or scene from the episode?

Courtney: I loved the scenes between Blair and Eleanor, but my favorite quote goes to a low blow from Queen B to Nelly: "Then why are you still sitting below me on the steps?" Classic throwback.

Leigh: This is so weird but "It's the people you know best who can hurt you the worst." Serena VDW has never been so well spoken.

Christina: Blair: "Hold it right there, Humpfreak!" I sincerely missed the Dan jabs.

Steve: B recalling that she'd been cordial for 52 minutes. Not that she's counting.

2. Blair's devising a line based on her Constance school uniform: Is this her best idea yet or will it be another fashion disaster?

Courtney: Ehhh, not too sure. Could be super cute and fun or it could be a giant mess. I'm thinking since it's the end of the series... it will be a hit.

Leigh: I think it'll be a hit now that Blair is letting her dark side work with her light side! Gotta have the balance.

Christina: Well, one thing's for sure: Blair never looked better than in Gossip Girl Season 1 or 2. She definitely knew how to rock her uniforms, so I guess it's time for her to bring back the headband.

Steve: A wise fashion designer once said that everything old becomes new again. NOTE: I don't actually know if that's true, but there could be something vintage and old school about B's new idea.

3. Georgina was MIA. Did you miss her?

Courtney: Nope, NOT AT ALL.

Leigh: I missed G. She's hilarious.

Christina: I'm with Courtney on this one. It may be wishful thinking, but I hope we've seen the last of her.

Steve: While I recognize that she's often inserted into the plot in absurd ways, I'm with Leigh. The girl has so many of the best Gossip Girl quotes and there's never a dull moment. Poorly written, maybe. But not dull.

4. Derena is back on: thumbs up or thumbs down?

Courtney: Thumbs up. Only because their parents are no longer together and doesn't look like that's going to happen again.

Leigh: Serena is too quick to forgive. I kinda dug it though. Season 1 vibes.

Christina: Thumbs down because I'm still rooting for Serenate!

Steve: Call me a sucker for old school Gossip Girl, but thumbs up because they might as well end the series the way it began ... either that or have the relationship implode again in even more spectacular fashion.

5. What was your favorite Ivy insult?

Courtney: Ivy blasting Lily at the art auction was pretty impressive, especially when she told her that she wants to be better than her and Rufus already thinks she is. Burn!

Leigh: The best dig was really by Rufus. He is the one guy who would never reduce himself to "revenge smut." When he's turned on Lily for good, you know she deserves it.

Christina: It's so hard to choose because I loved every bit of Lily's snarky remarks and even Ivy's constant one-upping. I'll go with "gypsy trash" though.

Steve: "Listen, you vile little interloper. You and Rufus may have rubbed your last two nickels together to replace my art, but the only people that you are making fools of are yourselves." That's just brutal.

6. Who was on the other end of Ivy's mysterious phone call?

Courtney: I'm hoping it's not Lola because that girl was boring. Possibly Serena's dad? I wouldn't mind having a Baldwin back on set.

Leigh: Courtney is sooo right, I didn't even think of it at first. Billy Baldwin is coming back!!! He was photographed on set! Eww how old is Ivy, please say older than we think.

Christina: Scott, Lily and Rufus's love child. How crazy would that be?!

Steve: Gossip Girl! Or Juliet or Eric or Jenny or Jack or William. If I just keep throwing out characters from seasons past that are set to return this fall I figure I'll nail it eventually.

I love Blair's mom, she's perfectly crazy, in fact it's very convincing that a woman like that would've raised someone like Blair. Margaret Colin really does a great job with her character, I'd like to see her used more.

Another note - I loved that they used "Stay" by MNDR (somewhat ironically) during the scene when Ivy goes through the contents of an envelope while talking on the phone, and we realize Ivy’s plans for the future. However, I hate how the Rufus and Ivy angle played out and wonder what the writers were thinking...urgh.

I would have had Chuck and Blair's pact be that they won't marry until they accomplished their goals then have her discover that she fainted because she's pregnant Blair then after learning the news decides to keep the pregnancy a secret after her miscarriage Dan moves in finds the test thinks she's keeping the pregnancy a secret because he's the father outs the news in his chapter about her allowing her to see him how he truly is tells him that his actions proved to her she made the right decision and that him of all people should've understood why she was waiting before making an announcement. Dan after some soul searching and the release of the sextape finds comfort in the arms of his first love who ended her relationship with Steven after learning he slept with her mother

I think you hit the nail on the head with 'common complaints'. What does that say? Basically that most people cannot believe Blair and Chuck are still not properly together, Serena and Dan is the worst idea ever. Sweet once but too much has happened. I would have liked to them as friends again though. The Bart story is a joke. Sage is irrelevant. I have no opinion one way or the other about her. The problem isn't the guest stars its the shocking writing for the main characters. It makes no sense and the only people that claim it makes sense are the diehard shippers. Sam was right - people cannot see beyond their ship!

This season is not all that bad the common complaints are Chuck and Blair's pact which in my opinion makes sense for the characters Dan and Serena's reconciliation since neither is on good terms with anyone else it makes sense that they would turn to each other and of course S is going to forget about Steven the moment she thinks she has a chance with Dan the love of her life and Sage while I personally dislike the actress and the character I think any new character that enters during a series final season is going to be disliked because the character takes screen time away from the characters the audience is invested in. These flaws are minor ones when compared to some of the others the series has faced in the past

It's not that we expect the show to be written like the great American novel (or in my case British novel); we just expect an attempt at a coherent storyline and not ever regressing characters. As stated I'm not bothered about who is endgame. I just wish we'd got there in a less forced and ridiculous fashion so when this show ends I feel satisfied about where all the characters are. I don't think this is going to happen.

I cease to understand why some believe GG should be written like the next great American novel. It's a teen drama/soap on a lacklustre network. I mean come on...,I enjoy it for what it is. The writers made it all about who ends up with who so endgame is what I am waiting for.

Wow true Chair shipper here I sense. Don't take it personally girl. Relax. Nobody said anything about Dair here, we're just saying that Derena now makes less sense than Dair because Dan obviously loved Blair one episode ago. Nobody spoke of Blair's feelings so read carefully. I'm not a shipper, I dislike this show altogether. Dair didn't technically make sense WHEN it happened but their buildup was the more logical and respectful of both the character' needs especially in season 4. Season 5 was the beginning of Gossip Girl's true descent into madness (show was already shitty but at least, vaguely potable) and obviously, only rabid shippers like you can enjoy it.

dumbfuckers and it was not out of the blue when blair magically had feelings for dan last season when 2 episodes ago she was marrying a prince and pretend to love chuck more and more everyday. The only ship that didn't make any sense was dair, they ruined the show and i am not a derena fan at all.Honestly i wanted dan to end up alone or die.

You said it all girl. But these so-called "shippers", they don't care about continuity or logic. I remember when Dan and Blair got together, some still believed that he was using Blair to avoid his feelings for Serena. If he really had loved Serena all along, he wouldn't have written a whole book dedicated to Blair and he would have tried harder with Serena. Instead, he just didn't care. And it still is blatantly obvious that the writers are trying to force Derena out of the blue. I mean, Dan was still pining after Blair in the beginning of this shitty ass season. If I were Serena, I would not believe that Dan liked me when it's so obvious that it's been Blair for almost three seasons. He wrote a book about Blair. That'd be enough to turn me off.
