Hawaii Five-0 Review: Cat and Mouse

by at . Comments

"Wahine'inoloa:" Evil Woman

Move over Wo Fat, there is a new criminal genius in town - and she's hot. Olivia Victor is smart, sexy and very deadly.

While I don’t like seeing Steve made to look dumb, I was okay with it in the cat and mouse game Olivia and him played here, even when Steve ended up the mouse more than the cat. I mean, come on Steve, when the woman who has a restraining order against you invites you for drinks, you should know she is up to something.

Investigation the Therapist

Vanessa Marcil has come a long way since playing Sam Marquez on Vegas. I really hope that Olivia figures out how to get out of jail and beat the charges so she is able to come back to play with Five-0 again; she was a refreshing change of criminal.

I especially liked the twist that the private investigator was blackmailing Olivia’s clients, I didn't see that one coming. Though I’m surprised she didn't grab the laptop if she took the time to drive t to his stakeout and shoot him. Maybe someone else shot him for her and wasn't as smart as she is.

In the other half of the episode, we had the hot mess that was Agent Channing and Catherine trying to stop a Colombian assassin that was believed to be dead from finding Doris McGarrett. I’m not even sure where to start with how many ways this went wrong, so I’m just going to list them:

Agent Channing at Catherine’s House: If he was suspended, how was he carrying a gun? And if he found out enough about Catherine to know where she lives, why didn't he go to her commanding officer? I’m pretty sure he would know that the military frowns on officers committing crimes, especially something that could be seen as a breach of national security.

Oh, and let's not forget that if showing up at her house with a gun while suspended wasn't ridiculous enough; Channing felt she was the best qualified person to help with a "quiet mission" and that she agreed after she had to fight him for the gun. My WTF Meter shot to 11.

Catherine Rollins super spy: I have to ask, what Navy officer (that is not a SEAL) has hacking equipment to break into a hotel room and/or a digital room safe? While we are at it, in what frakking universe does a Navy communications officer carry a side-arm off duty and not work during the day to run around with a Witness Protection agent playing cops and robbers?

Mr. Lenkov, if you want to make Catherine an agent, a private investigator, a spy or some other cloak and dagger character, go for it. Michelle Borth looks great kicking in doors and hacking into safes, but for goodness’ sake, please have her leave military as her "day job." She’s broken so many laws that she would have been court marshaled several times by now.

Doris McGarrett and Mangosta: While I like the idea in principle that Doris turned the tables on Mangosta, it showed a very dark side of a fairly new character to have her torturing the guy when Channing and Catherine walked in.

So what did you think of the episode? I’m giving it 3.8 leftover Thanksgiving turkeys for the introduction of a great new villain facing off against Steve, but one of the most ridiculous Catherine (or Doris) stories to date.

Worst episode so far... The very fact that Catherine is doing any of these actions is so laughably wrong you have to wonder what drugs the writers are on. have we heard of research? No? Too much work I guess. Ridiculous addition to the full time roster. I wish they had not wasted Michelle Borth's talents on such crap writing and poor character development.

Catherine was great in this episode. The show is not the McDanno show and I'm sick of the predictable whining about any character who dares interfere with the Steve/Danny show. We had it for Jenna/Joe/Lori and now Catherine. Steve was perfectly in character as well. I love when the writers have Steve act like the tough Navy SEAL he is. Thats why he was given the job of head of a Special Task force.
The story and pace were great and again it always amuses me when some viewers start complaining about reality. The most unbeliebable thing about the show is Danny being a cop, but if Danny and Steve had hugged or we had some forced bromance moments then there would be no complaints about reality.

I liked this episode. Loved Vanessa, and I too wish they had her for longer, but that is not going to work with the way they ended it. I liked that Doris was a little more then the sad Mom trying to get back in her childrens lives after she did her best to mess the whole family up. You have to have hardened at some point after being on the run for 20 yrs. I like Catherine as well. I don't know why some people have to call her a MarySue. They did the same thing with Lori, I did not like Lori, but did not think MarySue was appropriate. I have a sister named Sue, and my wife is Mary, so maybe that gets to me a little more then most, but I believe you can voice your opinion without the name calling and comments on someone's looks. Michelle Borth is a beautiful woman and a good actress, I'm glad to see that they are developing Catherine, much better than how they did Lori. I'm also glad we have more women on the show, and I don't think it takes away from the others. So far this season is much better than last year.

I do not watch Hawaii 5-0 for Catherine and my patience is wearing thin with the Catherine and Doris show. Also, see no chemistry or attraction between Steve and Catherine, they are bland together more old friends or FWB rather than any actual relationship, so those parts like her lying for Doris, just fall flat for me. Catherine is unbelievable and uninteresting. Time for her to ship out. Doris is definitely not the motherly type. She seems very hard hearted, didn't even mention Mary for weeks then is suddenly weepy and worried about her kids or what Steve will think. At least Doris is supposed to be a super spy, so it was good to see her take care of herself. I think TPTB have some torture kink, we've seen a lot this season. The end scene with Cath was absurd, don't tell Steve yet Doris is bruised, lamps broken and blood on the floor at his house. Don't think Steve is going to miss any of that or buy some lame excuse. Doris and Catherine need to go, the sooner the better.

This ep was immediately deleted from my dvr. One of my least favorites. I like the idea of Olivia and she was played well by Vanessa Marcil, but the story meandered too much and Steve seemed out of character, letting her get under his skin so easily. Also, have to question the restraining order against a cop in an active investigation. I let a lot go on tv, but this is one of those things that just stuck out too much. Catherine was once again ridiculous, a Mary Sue. Agree with the reviewers points. She is an analyst, communications or intelligence who knows, yet every episode she is shoved in with some new dazzling talent. This week it was private investigator who does breaking and entering and safe cracking yet can also add someone to the no-fly list while on an extremely extended leave. She must have some toy box for all her many jobs/talents. The character has no point or purpose and is taking up time that should be used by the team and/or Danny, Chin and Kono.

I love the show, and while I don't expect it to be based in reality, unless it's sci-fi, it needs to have some reasonable premise. McG was great but I think they needed more of the good doctor pushing farther into his issues, uncomfortably so. We don't really know why McG is the way he is, and this would have been a good way for that to happen. The whole drink-restraining order was beyond absurd. He seemed to be a total idiot. And why once she killed the flight attendant (shouldn't she have just whacked her over the head instead?), didn't she tie back her hair? And why didn't Kono and the cameras pick her up as she left looking the same but with a different suit from the ladies' room? I mean, what was the point of then killing the flight attendant? She still had alibis for the other murders - but then they had her dead to rights with the attendant. Dumb, dumb. Mama McG. Love her, love her addition - didn't love her as psycho agent/assassin though. Hard to buy. Secret spy, okay. Assassin? Doubtful. And while I like Michele Borth, I don't like what they've done with Cath - Steve still only interacts with her when he wants something, she is more plyable than play-doh, and now she's super spy too with gadgets and guns? SHE'S AN ANALYST!!!! You want her on the show more, play up her relationship (or lack thereof with Steve). But for an hour show, you have too many leads and not enough supporting actors. The focus should be Steve & Danny, then Kono & Chin, then the others supporting and occasionally feeding into that. Where was Danny this ep? Where was Chin? While I'm complaining, I love the show and think the actors are terrific. The producers and writers... that's another story. Steve's character has a chance to be much deeper than it is, and Alex has the depth to play it - LET HIM! Same think with Chin/DDK. Love the action, but let's drop the extra "regulars" and have them back to supporting. And let's get into some of Steve's issues around commitment and letting himself be loved. The man is 36 years old and hopelessly single. Really?

I think Vanessa's character created more intense chemistry with Steve than his current friend. I hope each episode for Kono to be killed off - she is a real drag on this show. I was hoping that Vanessa would get a multi arc stint and get steamy with Steve! She could have also gotten into some of the mommy/son issues and helped flesh out the characters more. Hope they find a way to bring her back...though they seemed to have ruined it with the get away scene!

Great episode. Like tough Steve and kick ass Cath. She's perfect for Steve though he needs to start treating her better. Doris is becoming more interesting and look forward to seeing what she gets up to next. Enjoyed the last two episodes a lot.

Cont. As far as the Casey Anthony case, the prosecution were the idiots, and the jury had no choice. I think she did it, but the prosecution in its smug attitude did not prove it. So I think the jury did not watch TV, they went by the letter of the law, which is what you are suppose to do. The O.J. case could have used a less suspicious police detective, and actually the jury could have benefited from watching CSI, although it was not on then.
You can't blame TV or Movies for what people do. I watched Road Runner and Wiley Coyote and I have yet to drop a safe on anyone.
