Nashville Review: The Duet

by at . Comments

Well, it's taken nearly half a season, but we finally got to see Rayna and Juliette perform onstage together. In "Lovesick Blues" the blonde bombshells were forced to work together for the record label's anniversary concert.

Marshall Evans sure commands a lot of control over this pair, which surprises me because I feel like Rayna and Juliette are both so feisty and assertive. I figure the two of them could easily get Marshall to cave to their demands.

Finally a Duet

All I know is that this power struggle between the ladies and the record label led to what I thought was an awesome duet. It's about damn time! The song was so catchy and they looked terrific up there together. Isn't it interesting how sometimes great things can come out of something you've been dreading?

Rayna and Juliette both did each other a favor. While Rayna has the experience and clout to perform at a Nashville staple like Ryman Auditorium, Juliette has the younger and larger fanbase. Juliette's fans are the ones who are going to run to iTunes and download like crazy. Rayna's fans - like the ones at Teddy's campaign stop - don't even know a new album has been dropped unless they see it at Starbucks.

That said, Juliette needs to respect her elders and be grateful that Rayna was willing to help her while her reputation is on the down and out. Seriously, when you're being considered the Jessica Simpson to your football player boyfriend Tony Romo, you know you need to take serious measures. In the same way that Jessica probably shouldn't have rocked those mom jeans, Juliette's dress was obscenely short. I am by no means conservative and would normally never even comment, but half of that audience was probably able to give her a gynecological exam from their seats.

Speaking of Juliette and her new man Sean, that scene in the living room was H-O-T. Poor Juliette really looks for so much validity in sex, though that the second he wanted to slow it down she automatically assumed he was gay. Pump the brakes, girl. Still, wanting to get to know each before jumping in the sack is far different from wanting to wait until marriage to have sex. There's no way Juliette is going to hold out. Perhaps that's the important question she has to ask him in next week's preview?

I prefer Juliette and Deacon to be writing partners and I'm glad they are supportive of each other. Rayna and Deacon will always have the chemistry and the history, so why bring our other leading lady into that whole mess? Obviously Rayna is going to be furious when she sees the photos of Teddy and Peggy, but I think it'll be more about trust and humiliation than heartbreak. Rayna and Teddy have awful chemistry. They are completely wooden with each other.

Now I know that nobody will ever have chemistry with Connie Britton the way Kyle Chandler did, but she and Deacon definitely have a strong connection. I have a feeling she is going to flee back to him after Teddy's confession. Also, Teddy is lying because there might not be an affair now, but there definitely was at some point. Plus, Kimberly Williams Paisley was just bumped up to series regular. Peggy is here for the long haul.

This show is all about love triangles and props to them because they do it well. Gunnar inappropriately breaking up Scarlett's post breakup makeout session was unintentionally the best thing he could've done. Scarlett ran out in anger and hurt and ran back to Avery... who was sleeping with his slutty manager. Now Scarlett is really ready to move away from Avery and she's also ready to start writing again.

By the way, I was in love with her performance of "Ring of Fire!" Scarlett has got talent!

My least favourite episode so far. I still liked it bit didn't think it was as good as usual. Gunnar getting jealous over the random bloke was good to see. However I didn't like his comments to Scarlett during that scene. He acted more like Avery calling her a loose woman etc. It just seemed out of character to me. @Suzanne, it seemed to me that Sean was been dragged along by Juliet and that she didn't give him much of an oppurtunity to slow things down until the point he actually did.

I love this show! Yes, I agree that Juliette and Deacon should remain friends/writing partners. Juliette and Sean -- yes! Like Kay, I appreciate that the show features this naive, well-intentioned good guy. If other TV programs offer such characters at all, it's to make them the butt of jokes. And it could't hurt Juliette to slow down on some of her bad-girl ways. It's a shame about the girl Hayley that Gunnar is dating, because we know his heart belongs to Scarlet!

WHERE can I find a guy like Sean?!?! I've been looking for years LOL!! I thought this was a great episode. I loved watching the acrimony between Rayna and Juliette, and I love how they worked through it. Juliette's face on stage bothered me though - she could have saved the sneers for off stage. Rayna was way more professional. And that duet was KILLER - holy, it was fantastic. I agree with a previous comment - Rayna and Juliette seemed to be battling over their Deacon territory. Deacon seems to be the grounded centre that keeps them all in line. Gunnar's reaction to Scarlett in the dress was awesome LOL. I've wanted Gunnar and Scarlett together since the start, but I actually like Gunnar's girlfriend and feel bad that she's going to get hurt for no fault of her own. And yes LOL - Juliette's dress was WAY too short - I couldn't get over it the whole performance!!! LOL!!

I LOVED the duet. You can tell that Deacon is the candle that holds all the crazies together. It was almost a power struggle over who gets to claim Deacon more on that stage. Priceless. I would, however, prefer Deacon and Juliette to remain good friends. They come from similar backgrounds and understand each other. Juliette and Sean on the other hand is bound for great things! There are too few naively sincere good guys on TV. I wanna see both of them strip each other down (literally and figuratively) and grow to be better people. Also, the bar scene between Gunnar and Scarlet turned me off to Gunnar. The "not that loose" line was derogatory and unfairly possessive. He needs to figure his shit out and NOT hurt Hayley bc she's been so cool about him.

Like the show , but I will never get comfortable with all that lip synching ...and of course , the usual snakes in a cast - Rayna's father and husband !

"I am by no means conservative and would normally never even comment, but half of that audience was probably able to give her a gynecological exam from their seats" Haha, amazing! This was a great episode. I actually believe that Teddy and Peggy never had an affair- why would he tell her privately that she can honestly say there is nothing romantic there? This show is taking unusual routes with the love triangles, and I think it is definitely an intriguing twist if Teddy DIDN'T have an affair, because these days that is actually unexpected.

I HATED Scarlett's version of "Ring of Fire" - Her perky. cutesy approach made it seem like she hadn't bothered to pay attention to the lyric she was singing. Also, if a woman went as far as Sean did and then put on the brakes, she'd be caused a tease or worse. He sent incredibly mixed feelings and should be old enough to know better.

Gunnar's reaction when he saw Scarlett in her dress was priceless! I like the girl he is dating BUT we all know Gunnar has liked Scarlett for a long time and he will make his move soon.

This was by far the best episode so far. As Chicago Fire was not on last night I watched this at the regular time and did not PVR it.
We all know Rayna and Juliette will never be friends, both woman were equally nasty to each other. I have to say I was not surprised when Deacon stood up for Juliette after she walked out. I have to hand it to Rayna though for sucking it up and going to Juliette's house. The song they wrote was really good.
Sean is a hottie and for all the short skirts and cleavage on the show it was nice to see a hot guy with his shirt off! I am sucker for tattoos, so more shirtless Sean please. :)
The whole Teddy and campaign storyline will not end well. I am betting that Rayna and Teddy will not make it to the end of the season and I see her hooking up with the guy she is working with now ( I can not recall his name).
