The Mentalist Review: See Jane Run

at . Comments

Patrick Jane doesn't run... that is, unless he's chasing Red John - yet "Red Sails in the Sunset" started off with the odd site of watching Jane run. With whom was he meeting? Where was he headed?

The answers were both surprising and a little disappointing.

Yes, anyone who saw last week's previews knew that Bret Stiles was making an appearance, but I was expecting more. I'm a fan of the oddly engaging cult leader and I had hoped we'd get more of him than just one scene.

Jane Works With Stiles

Not only did Jane cash in his marker with Stiles, he also smashed the window of his precious Citron. This was serious.

I liked that the plot didn't linger on the finer points of Lorelei's breakout and got straight to her interactions with Jane. The poor girl thought Red John had come to rescue her and instead she found Patrick Jane.  She wasn't happy.

My favorite scene was watching Lorelei and Patrick on the beach. It was a beautiful setting that felt odd, lonely and peaceful all at once.

Back at the CBI, Agent Kirkland showed up once again and did anyone else notice Lisbon fluffing her hair when she saw him? Ugh. Please don't let that mean anything. The guy would creep me out even if he weren't a Red John minion.

But Lisbon brought up an interesting point: How does someone become the mistress of a psychopath? What was Lorelei's story? Thankfully we found out.

When Dana shared her story about selling her two-year old, it made my stomach turn. Honestly, I expected Lisbon to look more horrified. Lorelei effectively had her sister stolen from her twice. Once as a child by her own mother, and later taken permanently from her by Red John - but Lorelei never made the Red John connection.

Watching Patrick walk up to that cabin in the woods was so creepy it made my heart pound. His abduction set up, complete with car crash, was so perfect that only Lisbon would think to question it.

But for Jane the bruises, neck brace and Lisbon's suspicions were all worth it the moment Lorelei gave him his biggest clue in this The Mentalist quote...

I only wonder why the two of you didn't become life long friends the moment you shook hands. | permalink

Patrick Jane has already met Red John. Something that many of us have long suspected has now been confirmed and the obsessed glee in Jane's eyes was more than a little disconcerting.

So, is it someone he knows well? Someone he'd never suspect or perhaps a person he's recently crossed paths with? What's your latest Red John Theory?

Rank, thanks for the info, because I didn't know that Van Pelt was pregnant. I did wonder why we weren't seeing much of her. On another topic, I didn't see any episode when Rigsby broke up with his lawyer girlfriend. When did that happen. Also, I don't believe that Lisbon is in love with Patrick Jane. He is too annoying to love! lol. I think she cares for him a lot, and empathasizes with him re the loss of his wife and child. Sometimes as "shippers" we tend to see relationships in every lead, but I believe this is one show where this is not so. They even axed the relationship with Rigsby and Van Pelt, and that had seemed more feasible. So please people, stop seeing relationships where there aren't any. Stop the unnecessary "shipping".

I haven't watched the episode yet, as I missed it last night but plan to watch it online. However, when I saw the promo and read what it's about, I wasn't even enthused. I am so fed up of the Red John arc. When they killed off the guy we thought was Red John (Bradford from West Wing and The Good Guys), I was thrilled. I couldn't believe they would say he wasn't RJ and start the stupid hunt again. Not to mention Jane's obsession with Lorelei. A poster here is right: they are going to lose viewers if any thinks like that viewer or like me. So fed up now. Still like the show, but Red John, BE GONE NOW!!!

Oh, sonde, me TOO! I am SO sick of the "Red John" storyline. There are "arcs" and then there are . . . . What should we call this? A car driving over a cliff is more like it. This long, drawn out "could it be . . .???" season after season is tiresome. When Jane is at the outdoor food court and shoots Red John, that should have ended it. Or maybe one or two episodes after that. But again and again and again; it's just too much.

I found myself on a mountain top chanting "Red John, BE GONE! Red John, BE GONE!" was that too much? Well get him out, wrap it up, call it a day. You're losing viewers, add to that the fact that the whole Sunday night lineup pushes the series too late into the evening. As for Stiles being Red John, he is so creepy looking, I'm surprised they didn't make him another one of Grace's ill fated boyfriend relationships. We need new blood here people, better time slot and of course, the whole Red John, BE GONE thing.

Count me in as another "Bret Stiles is Red John" believer. It makes total sense.

Ha! I certainly did see Lisbon fluff her hair for the DHS guy! And when she sat down across from him, she leaned towards him, crossing her arms on her knees (squishes the cleavage, right?) and gives him a winning, shiny-eyed smile. What a flirt! It's so clear how much she loves Patrick Jane, but she's not dead or declared, and has to keep her options open, yeah? It's fun.

I loved the show last night. I think that the Red John storyline needs to get wrapped up this season as it has been going on a long time and it is so far fetched that some person has this much power over so many people. My fear is that the show will get cancelled and we will never know who the person is.......if the writers even know as I think they keep changing the possibilities to sting out the storyline.

OK- I love this show. The writers are great, as is the cast. I think we all knew Van Pelt is pregnant (too much time behind the desk, slight weight gain, etc.)- congrats to her! Yes, Lisbon is in love with Patrick. You're blind if you don't see it. And I think Red John is Stiles also. With this show and it's twists and turns, you never know. I really wish they would wrap up the Red John storyline. Jane is so good at what he does, that could carry the show. Good episode.

Wow, what a roiling episode! Jane so passive and obsequious towards Lorelei, to the point of allowing her to kick the stuffing out of him. I still have the last scene playing in my mind -- Jane looked absolutely maniacal -- burnt and braced and smiling with all his teeth. Chilling. Lisbon didn't even look freaked. Someone said last week that Simon directed this one, didn't catch the credits. He shook RF's hand. Some clue. Well at least TNT is running the episodes almost non-stop so anyone with the time and interest can watch for every hand Jane ever shook. I'm not taking it on as a project, but it will definitely make me start noticing. Dang it.
