Hawaii Five-0 Review: A Pot Luck Christmas

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to everyone! To finish out 2012 with the Five-0 team, we were treated a bit of a pot-luck episode, as a little bit of everything thrown in....

Chin-ho has an uncle: George Takei supposedly guest-starred this week. But did you catch him? As usual for Hawaii Five-O and its name guest stars, he was in the episode for one scene that lasted about five minutes.

I really hope that Takei is asked to come back for a more substantial contribution. He is such a great actor and you could tell he was having a ball playing the moonshine-wielding uncle.

Chin's Uncle

Kamekona bought a helicopter. Did anyone else think Kamekona’s previous mention of doing island tours was meant to be funny? Apparently someone wants to see the 400-pound Samoan squished into the front seat of a helicopter made for someone nearly half his weight.

Oh wait, that’s right – he spent $170,000 and doesn't have his pilot’s licenses to even fly the silly thing, making it the most expensive paperweight he has ever owned.   Seriously, Mr. Lenkov, let this one go, we don’t need it.

McGarrett is clueless on dates: Who in his/her right mind thinks eating from a cardboard box in a parking lot is considered “some place special?" I know McGarrett doesn't like to be wrong, but honestly man, sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and admit you screwed up.

Okay, to be fair, he sort of did as he recreated one of the most recognizable scenes from An Officer and A Gentlemen when he showed up completely dressed up and carried Catherine away. Hey, Steve, for the record, “I’m sorry” is a helluva lot easier on the wallet.

Catherine kicked some ass. I have to give full credit to Peter Lenkov and his team: this week they had Catherine in situations that made perfect sense and even provided a quick nod to her being on leave for two more days.

Did anyone else wonder if she got combat training from Natasha Romanoff, (a.k.a. Black Widow in the Avengers and Iron Man movies)? She was awesome with the combat against Rizzi, that over-the-shoulder with the legs move that she use to throw him down the stairs was pretty cool.

All in all, it was a fun outing leading into the holiday season. I’m giving the episode 4 "Oh-My"s for a glimpse at George Takei, but docking this a stocking for not using him to a proper extent.

The good - George Takei was awesome. They wasted his appearance with just 1 scene though. The pig juice was funny to see Chin's reaction and Steve/Danny trying not to laugh. Danny/Kamekona was funny. Nice to see Super Seal and the scene with Duke. Some good Danny 1 liners and the car scene with Steve/Danny was good. A little bit of action and good to see more Chin.

Not a good ep and a major disappointment for both a Christmas ep and last new ep before the break. Left a bad taste. Way too much Cath. Kono should have been guarding the kid and doing the police work as she is an actual cop. Once again Cath gets forced in and becomes super!Cath to save the day. Totally unbelievable. Ending was horribly cheesy, just plain bad. They have no chemistry, their scenes are awkward and boring. Also, her complaining about the date - how long has she known him? Remember season 1 wining and dining on the beach at sunset. Made Steve look stupid due to lazy writing. Case was long and drug out to make more Cath scenes with the kid. Didn't get much out of those either. Filler. Terrible that they made Danny look stupid asking what an imu pit was. Sad we had no ohana scene. What a contrast to the great Christmas ep of season 1. @Lena, I noticed the nod to TC and Magnum PI as well, but I wasn't 100% sure.. thanks for helping confirm what I saw :)

'He's you at 13'. Priceless. Then Catherine gets to kick a**. YES!
George Takei was great but needed about 20 minutes more. Next time he can help Chin buckle-a-swash.

I enjoyed the episode. The young actor who played Ethan was great! A classic 13 yo - obnoxious and snotty cause they don't want you to know just how scared they are. Steve works well with kids and between last week with Lucy and this week with Ethan I'm loving him more than ever. Even Cath worked well w/Ethan and her kicka$$ moves are phenomenal. I love how Steve and Caths relationship is growing and while he messed up he made up,for it admirably. Sigh.. That man wears a tux like no other. The minimal guest star exposure was just right, I was waiting fir an Oh MY from Uncle Choi when Danny refused his moonshine. You can't please everyone with every episode but so far I've found this season to be head and shoulders 3,000x better than last season. I'm glad the year ended on a happy note. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all!

I loved this ep, not just for all the sly humor, but for the great moments, like Catherine kicking butt, and Steve in a Tux, so incredibly hot and handsome at the end, carrying her to a dinner date...swoon!
And George Takai was AWESOME as Chins uncle..I seriously hope that they bring him back, he was hilarious and would be wonderful for Chin and Kono to use in various ways during their investigations. Only Takai could act wise and drunk at the same time! What a marvelous actor!
And I also thought the whole heliocopter thing was silly, but I loved that they had the Magnum PI copter in back of the one that the big guy bought. And hey, lay off Danno, folks, he's a great dad and a good cop, so I enjoy his banter with Steve.

It's about time we saw Catherine kick some criminal ass, and this guy sure gave her a challenge. Steve in a tux--drool, pant pant. Steve's action during the carjacking, Kamekona's "Cyrano" act during the helo sale, Max's sardonic responses to Danny's digs, Chin and the pig juice, and George Takei's character--all funny (and Takei sure is aging beautifully--ohh myyyyyy!!!!!) Gotta agree with some of the other posters though. I found the plot a little hard to follow--who killed who over whose moonshine sold to who? The kid vandalizes the police station, steals money from Catherine, and pulls a fire alarm and isn't disciplined (at least not so we saw)? Steve's "epiphany" about where the criminal could have gone next (and that he was right) was just a tad too convenient given that we just saw it happen--it would have been a better twist if he and Danno just showed up unexpectedly.

the December 17th episode of Hawaii Five-O was great they threw in the kitchen sink! They should have given a much bigger part to uncle Choi!! hope fully he will be back for Helping out in a bigger role in another episode as an ex cop with friends that Chin-Ho&Kono are unaware of!!the part with danny &Kamekona buying a chopper was Hilarious!! i noticed TC's old chopper there & i think Tom Sellleck AS Catherines dad would be great!! having steven show up in a tux to take Catherine out to Dinner that was Great!! it was a great christmas Coup de gras for STEVE&CATHERINE@!! Blatant Product Placement #1: anyone notice the comic book the kid was reading while Steve & Cath were talking about him? The cover was shown more than once: R.I.P.D. Just happens to be the name of the graphic novel PLenkov wrote and is now being made into a movie! This one didn't bother me - it's just something I immediately noticed. All in all, a nice little stand alone ep that we'll probably see in reruns since it doesn't affect any story lines. Nice Steve & Cath segments, fun Danny & Kamekona helicopter shopping, good times at the hooch still with George Takei. Oh, I do like Catherine, and I felt the show used her perfectly this week. Next time we see her she'll probably be back out to sea, since the show cleverly told us she only had 2 days of leave left. Steve's gonna miss her big time, I'm afraid!

Not my favorite, but not the worst, either. There were enjoyable moments, and many that left me scratching my head. The beginning was good for me, the ending was sweet - the middle lost me completely. I despise it when the writers need to explain something to the audience and they do it at Danny's expense. How in the world would Danny NOT know what an Emu pit is, unless he completely forgot how his first Hawaiian partner, Meka, was killed/roasted? Very bad, writers, even if it was your first H50 script, please watch the show before you make stupid writing errors and make a lead character look dumb. Head scratcher #2: why was the kid afraid to go down the stairs into his basement? We were never enlightened on this - thinking there's a deleted scene or two that might show up on S3 DVD. Hawaii Five-0 Season 3 Episode 11 Quotes

Kamekona: Because the seller is a white guy and you both speak the same language.
Danny: You mean English?
Kamekona : Yeah.

I didn't think we would be eating breakfast out of a box in a parking lot.
