Castle Review: Father FIgures and Felonies

by at . Comments

Castle aired "Under the Influence” this week, an episode that centered on the death of a young DJ and her accomplices. Let’s discuss...

Death of a DJ. The weekly case focused on the death of DJ Beats, aka Holly Rhodes. She was a girl from the wrong side of the tracks who had gotten mixed up working for a criminal. She would DJ parties and her assistant, a young kid, would steal expensive things from the parties.

Of course, this would lead to the death of the DJ. The bright spot of this case? Getting to watch Esposito take center stage.

Javi: Big Brother. I’ve said it before and I will say it again. The character of Esposito has really grown over the past few seasons and has become one of the best on the series. There are layers and issues and it makes him all that more interesting.

Now we know that he had a really rough childhood and even a record of his own. He just needed someone to help him out which he tried to do in return for Joey. The scenes between Javi and Joey were the most interesting parts of the hour. Jon Huertas has really become a star on this show. He has earned his right to be front and center in some of these installments. Let’s hope that the writers of the show keep up with this.

Beckett and a Dead Body

Caskett is Comfortable. There weren’t really any exciting moments for the shippers in “Under the Influence,” except for the funny comment about the movie Valentine’s Day. These two have developed into a comfortable and functioning couple. A lot of people were worried, me included, that making these two a couple would hurt the show.

You can’t get them together too soon but if you want too long, you make the viewers angry. Andrew Marlowe had perfect timing, however. It hasn’t ruined the series at all. In fact, I think it adds a new layer to the relationship that makes it more enjoyable. Don't you agree?

Side Notes:

  • Once again, no Captain Gates. Anyone miss her?
  • Seems like there is less screen time for Martha and Alexis than before. Is it working or should they be around more?
  • Did anyone find themselves not really interested in the case of this episode at all?
  • Getting closer to the annual two-parter in February. Can’t wait!

Overall, an enjoyable Castle episode. Not the best, but definitely not the worst. What did you think of “Under the Influence?” Up to Castle standards or did it fall short? Sound off below and let us know what you thought and check out the Castle quotes page for some good lines from the one and only Espo. Also, come back later this week for the Castle Round Table too!

Until next time, Castle Fanatics!

this episode earned the title of first filler for season 5. i normally rewatch castle all week but will not rewatch this episode. i love esposito as he is really easy on the eyes. i'm not sure i a ready for 43 minutes of backstory and focus on his character. i watch castle because of the chemistry between fillion and katic.

I don't mind Espesito being the center for once but the story was boring and Espesito is really a boring character and predictable. I lost interest in the story after 15 minutes and for the first time I actully considered not to watch the rest. That being said, this season has been really good, much better than season 4. Beckett and Castle being a couple works so much better than I thought.

This was another waste of an episode, like the Swan Song episode. Not an interesting story and, I'm sorry, but I don't want
Esposito and Ryan to be leads, nice as they are, this should be left to Castle and Beckett. No wonder they looked annoyed all the way through the episode. It was a shame that Gates did not appear, but I was glad to see none of the wittering redheads. The show is called 'Castle' and Beckett is the the other main lead, so let them lead. Please let's get back to proper episodes of Castle.

This episode gets consigned to the 'never to be watched again' pile. I love Javi and I don't need 42 minutes of Caskett. But the episode bored me. Javi is a supporting character, not a full lead. As someone else mentioned, this is not an ensemble show. I get exploring the supporting characters but to this extent it was just too much. Roll on next week.

I loved this ep, and was so thrilled that Esposito was front and center! He's such a hottie and a great actor, and I loved that he mentored that kid, who really deserved to have someone caring in his life who understands where he is coming from!
The moments with Castle and Beckett were just enough to keep things going...all in all, a great ep! But I do miss Martha and Alexis when we don't get to see them. They're both such fun!

I thought it was great to see Esposito from several different angles. The "look" from Lanie did not go unnoticed!!
You KNOW Castle and Beckett will be front and center in the next episode...relax!! I am okay with it being an "ensemble" for one week!

This is only the second time I was completely bored and frustrated with an episode of "Castle". I couldn't stay awake. I miss Martha and Alexis. Don't miss Gates. I love Detectives Esposito and Ryan but agree with some of the posters that they are "supporting" characters. This proves to me that the magic and allure of the show is really created by Castle and Beckett. Without them, or, with very little of them, the show falls flat. First epp of Season 5 that I will not purchase. BTW, I did not mean to give it four stars. Just two stars for me.

I like Espo and liked the episode. I love Caskett and those are my favorite episodes, but this was a nice change. Every week can't be them being mushy that would run out of steam eventually. We usually have some character centric episodes of the others in each season and it works. As an aside I do think it was the right choice to put them together. It is also right to make it not all smooth, but I don't think breaking them up would be wise.I do miss Martha and Alexis and Gates. If she is never around when is she going to find out about Caskett....when she does that opens up new storytelling possibilites. Hiding it is getting kind of thin. I still love show and I'm not trying to be negative that is just my opinion.

This show was never a "ensemble" cast. It has always had two leads, Kate and Castle with a supportive cast of Ryan, Espo, Lanie, Martha, Alexis and the captain. The episodes usually circle around those two, with the others as supporting players. Espo, while likeable, was never written as a lead character, and that is why this episode came off as boring to me and one that I don't care to watch again.

I missed the "Caskett" parts, but really like learning more of Espo's background..He's one of the more interesting characters in this show.
Didn't miss Gates at all..but I did miss Martha and Alexis..
