Nikita Review: Broken, But Bionic

by at . Comments

It really happened! Michael lost his hand after the run in with Amanda in Canada. Wow!

"Aftermath" was aptly titled, as we saw how Michael dealt with the shocking new impediment in his life and career. As much as he tried to act like he was going to be as good as new, he was wasn't physically or mentally the same.

Owen with a Gun

At first, Michael approached the situation with Nikita pragmatically without any feeling. It was war, it happened, let's move on. While he said that and probably believed it to some extent, it was so far from the truth. He was lying to himself and those around him, yet was determined to be the same soldier he always had been just with a metal hand.

Michael: Take a good look everyone. If you're nice, I'll even let you touch it, but no high fives. | permalink

It wasn't just Michael's new hand that was made of metal, it was as if he was surrounded in the solid material. Stoic for all to see. When Ryan assigned the mission to go and get the rogue cleaner, Liam, Michael was all set to go with Nikita and Owen. Even though Nikita knew it was a mistake for him to accompany them, she also understood that it would do greater harm to deny him.

The mission didn't go as planned, but that couldn't be blamed on Michael. Liam outwitted the Division agents by infiltrating their communications and then setting the building to explode. If Michael hadn't been there, Liam still would have gotten away. But, Michael was there, his hand didn't work, he shot erratically, and Liam drove away.

The strong face that Michael had put on was quickly fading away. It was painful to watch Michael lie about what happened with Liam and isolate himself from those that care about him. The loss of his hand is a tragedy and he was dealing with it the only way he knew how.

It seemed odd though that Ryan wouldn't have forced Michael to have therapy. Alex was sidelined not because of her addiction, but due to her health. She's not allowed in the field again until she brings her heart rate down. Why wasn't Michael being required to talk to someone about what happened?

Poor Nikita went from being closed out by Michael to being his punching bag. Not unexpected behavior, but still painful to see. She's such a strong person and is amazing at helping others. She helped Alex kick her addiction when they first met and also helped rehab Owen. How long until Michael let's go of what she did and let's her in?

Michael led a successful mission to kill Liam and get the laptop, while keeping both Nikita and Owen safe. Even that accomplishment wasn't enough to boost Michael's self-confidence. He could still do his job, just perhaps in a different way.

At least, Michael isn't giving up and hiding in a closet somewhere. He's a fighter and even if he is pushing people away, he hasn't retreated. He went to Birkhoff for other options. And, then after his fight with Nikita, feeling love and emotion, his robotic fist closed! An incredible feat for Michael, but not so great for that metal wall! That's a positive sign of Michael's recovery and maybe he will be better off with a robotic metal hand, right?

Nikita Season 3 was starting to get a little stale with the rogue agent of the week and never-ending battle with Amanda. While unfortunate, Michael's plight adds to the emotional stakes of the new Division. It provides an amazing opportunity to explore the relationship between Nikita and Michael. Why are they together? And, more importantly, can they withstand the good and bad times together?

They love each other enough, it's a question of whether Michael can let down his guard enough to let her in. Will his ego let her button a shirt if it's easier that way? I'm confident they will recognize they need each other and that moment when they do will be spectacular.

Michael's limitations in the field will also add complexity to their missions. Or, will he stay and help the field inexperienced Ryan back at Division? Regardless, this is an exciting story that Nikita is going to tell!

How long until Michael accepts that Nikita took his hand out of love for him and apologizes to her? Will Michael be able to work out in the field again? With the struggles Alex is facing, where is Sean?!?!

I seriously don't know why I watch this show any more. I think now, it's only for the eye candy. Love the women (Maggie Q and Lyndsy Fonseca) in this show. Okay, to the writers of the show. Wake up!
Is there any chance that you could at least put a fraction of something that resembles some sense of REALITY into this show? Or at least write something that is NOT so predictable? As soon as the cleaner left the house, I knew that he was going to get away while Michael was having an "Oh Darn" moment fumbling with the gun. Getting tired of the propaganda message of Drugs and being clean. Our countries issues with drugs are based on misinformation and it is our policies and law enforcement that does way MORE damage to individuals using drugs than the drugs themselves. Our country is full of hypocrites! We allow alcohol (a far worse drug cocktail than any pain killer or marijuana could ever be) and a deadly addictive drug called Nicotine as legal substances in our society and we ban others. I'm off my soap box for the drugs - back to the story. Does everyone live 3 hours from Nuevo Dorado? Where is Division located? How can the "crew" arrive only moments after Liam who was 3, no make that 2 hours 45 minutes away? Do these people have hypersonic airplanes, Star Trek like transporters that can beam then anywhere? Do they have their own fleet of supersonic SR71's with refueling tankers at their beck and call? This is not the first time I've noticed this. People are in Division one moment and in the next they are in Switzerland. Next, Liam, the cleaner, is pouring acid into the tub with VISIBLE (acidic / toxic) fumes I might add with only eye protection. WOW he has an indestructible nose, throat and lungs. What is ridiculous about this is that he's only got two bottles of acid. We're expected to believe that this will dissolve three bodies? Oh, I'm sorry I forgot, the average melon head sitting in front of the boob tube doesn't have a clue about science, physics or any other technology with respect to what really happens in the REAL WORLD. At least in Breaking Bad they used about 20 containers (filling up the tub) to dispose of the body there. Then, what authority (exactly) does the DEA have with Mexican Federales? I'm thinking that they're NOT calling the shots in Mexico. I've seen Mexican Federales personally. THEY ARE NOT SPEAKING ENGLISH AS THEIR NORMAL METHOD OF COMMUNICATION! It would have been much better to have had them speaking Spanish with subtitles ALL of the time. Another faux pas set of moments are when they enter the house. This is residential house. I is an average sized house right? You live in similar houses don't you? Are you trying to tell me that Owen who's walking around in a room that's right next to the room where Nikita is getting attacked; fighting for her life can't be heard by in the next room a few feet away? For the sake of drama, he's walking stealthily in the next room while all of this is going on in the next room trying not to make any sound. But, ladies and gents that's not the really big dumb thing that's happening here. Why is it that no one in TV shows or Movies can smell gas? The amount of gas necessary to create the explosion we see would be enough to send everyone sputtering and coughing as soon as the door opened. That limey bastard Alfred Hitchcock (who was instrumental in ruining Tipi Hedren's career) could give us suspense with a shower curtain and a knife. But then, people of his day, and even in George Washington's day were far more educated than the youngsters (writers) of today. Don't believe me? Read George Washington's farewell address sometime and tell me that most of the people writing for Nikita have that level of vocabulary and intelligence. I think not. And all this plus more happened within the first 15 minutes of the show!

This is a good series and the writers are willing to shake it up once in a while like Percy's death and Michael's hand. The pace is good and keep viewers on their toes. I was worried it was not last beyond season 1 which I really enjoyed. Great that now it is in season 3 and just as good !

Aries93

A good episode! So glad for the ratings as well! Hopefully viewership increases!
As for why Sean (and Amanda) were not in it, the actors/actress who play Sean, Owen and Amanda are all restricted to a certain episode amount of their contracts for both budgetary reasons and to accommodate them and storylines.

One thing to say...Where is Sean????!

Yes, Owen was baiting Michael, thinking that emotion would trigger his control of the heand. Yes, Owen has feelings for Nikita...it's evident in almost every scene they've had together. She knows it, too, but he has (so far)respected the boundaries. Michael lashed out at Nikita because he could. He knows the depths of Nikita's feelings for him--it's safe for him to lash out because he knows she'll understand. Does that make it right? No, but that kind of thing happens all the time. As the adage goes, we always hurt the ones we love. Oh, and yes--Birkhoff is awesome :)

★★★★☆TV Birkhoff" I got eyes, like Beyonce got thighs" Houston got some love in this ep. Really liked the pace of the episode as the hour came and went. #Cleaner

I continue to love this show. I watch it because of Maggie Q, who is the best female action hero! The best thing about this show is they gave the fans what they wanted (Nikita + Michael = True Love), but then they've made their relationship a humongous struggle, which propels the show on, because they have to work at resolving the issues they're faced with. It's a winning formula. The other thing I love about this show is it's not just for chicks, dicks find it worth watching too.

It's getting better and better every episode! What a blast.
