@Miranda Wicker: You are partially right. My comment was too sweeping an accusation. I did not mean all the comments, but rather some of them like Deann's and Blu's declaring how they adore Olivia and how criticizing her is sexist. That said, in an earlier comment I did criticize your review for not pointing out how the portrayal of Olivia, which was of a flawed human but still of an ultimately moral person over the past one and a half seasons and therefore of a likable heroine, has now been transformed into an irredeemable villain.
Finally, I do disagree with you concerning the moral compass: It is a common practice in moral philosophy to propose fictional moral scenarios and to assess our moral compass by our judgement of the situation.

I have to disagree it was quite clear he got dumped in the episode prior to this one and him just letting himself into her house should raise alarms. I also think their is a reason their engagement ended before and I also think Edison is not upstanding as he trying to make himself out to be and I wouldn't be surprise if he using Livvie and has thrown his lot in with Hollis.
And no what he was doing was out of line. The man lacks tact.

@biophill--no one is condoning her actions simply because they aren't part of this discussion. Calling our moral compasses into question over a fictional TV show is a reach.

    Well said, peaceful.

People have to remember that Edison did not/does not know anything about Fitz and Olivia. He's a man who was in a relationship with her and who wants her back. He is not doing anything differently that another man would not do. And because he knows Olivia, he knows when she is lying. That she stood her ground and ignored his accusations of lying was something to watch. Loved her speech. I feel sorry for him because he was right on the money but she wasn't backing down, and he does seem like an honest and nice guy, but she can't help herself. She's too in love with Fitz, and the heart wants what the heart wants, in both their cases. Sad.

Regarding the infidelity, yes it is awful--especially after she be-friended Mellie on the trail, but is this totally Olivia's fault? Fitz was an open wound that Mellie chose to ignore. A partnership is great, but that's not love. Mellie, with all of the planning and machinations, took her eyes off the prize and now has to deal with that. Fitz suffers plenty for his indiscretion.

Question now is how will Fitz react once he finds out about the election rigging and the subsequent crimes that Oliva committed on his behalf? Will he love her enough to forgive her this huge error in judgement? Will he rescue her and put her pieces back together now that she is unraveling?

More and more I ask myself "Who is Olivia Pople?" This episode clarifies Fitz, but not Olivia. I understand totally why he fell so hard for her. He was living an incomplete life and Olivia, allowed him to be the man the he was to be. She spoke life to him and offered him a love that he never knew. He was wise to love her. I wonder why Shonda chose to reverse on Fitz' mother--making her dead after having Mellie ask Tom and Hal if she was the cause of Fitz' foul mood in Hunting Season. Mom lived with Jerry's infidelities and over-bearing ways. Why didn't she save her son? Was she Mellie or Olivia?

As for Olivia, what made her give over her entire being, her freedom, her self-respect to Fitz? Why did she need to fix Fitz? It is obvious that she loves him beyond measure and this is no ordinary love story--so I get it AFTER the fact, but why choose Fitz? By saving him, she must be saving herself in some way. Who is Olivia Pope?

Regarding the infidelity, yes, it's awful--e

I simply can't believe what I am reading here. How can you adore Olivia? The love affair with Fitz is really not a big deal. This I could count as a "flaw", or not even. Love trumps all. But how can your moral compass be that far off to condone all her other actions, like treason, covering up murders, destroying other people's lives and helping other corrupt individuals into the highest positions in the country. I'm appalled.

"How dare you accuse me of things I am actually doing." Eddison needs to call ahead though.

@fudgefase - I have watched the episode several times on OnDemand cable today and I agree with you.... When Fitz finds out what Liv has done to rig the election they are getting to have a serious love crisis. It may not separate them forever, but it could be a while.

I just hope she is not foolish enough to seek solace with Edison....that would be a huge mistake. Besides, I do not trust him at all.

  11. jana

I disagree with anyone that has a problem with Olivia the lady has been through so much trying to make everyone else happy will she ever be happy for more than 1 episode...as for her and fitz that's her soulmate anyone that has watched the show from the beginning knows they are meant for each other its there in the way they look at each other hello "I exist for you" enough said there... As for Edison and mellie I feel for them I really do they love Olivia and Fitz.. but you can't help who you fall in love with if so it wouldn't be so much heartache in the world. I'm rooting for Olivia and fitz I want some couple that has that kind of love to be happy

  12. karkar

Mellie will never divorce Fitz.By the way, who's baby is it anyway? Looks like Mellie goes into labor in the next episode. As crazy as the program is I bet Mellie and child don't survive

  13. chris hughes

thanks for the eps.Never Seen the Show Before Enjoyed

"This love is a strange love' indeed. How many finger tingling, blood rushing, stomach turning moments have we had while Olivia and Fitz expressed their love for each other? Why is it necessary to follow up that pure kind of love with commitment or marriage? I think their discreet and forbidden love is sexy and hot. We wait for that next time they have another opportunity to make love again. If it was convenient, the show would be dull and we all know it.

  15. sdhb

If Olivia had not ok'd the election rigging, & Fitz had lost, he could have divorced Mellie & been w/Olivia- no problem. Too bad Olivia, you almost could have had it all. But then we wouldn't have this great show.

  16. V

@whateva you are a genius!!! Maybe just maybe Hollis played them and the rigging was unnecessary. Dude will do and say anything to get what he wants. Hmmmm...

  17. whateva

I still under belief the rigging was possibly unnecessary and it will come out he did win and Hollis just played them. But it going make the whole situation with blowing up that office really messed up.

BTW, I loved the speech that Olivia gave Edison, and I agree that there is NO chemistry between them at all, and she should not marry him. He's a bully and a jerk who has treated her poorly and whom she doesn't love. She's in love with Fitz, that much is plain, but she can't have him and he knows that. I realize that Fitz wants a divorce, but realistically, that ain't gonna happen, people, because Mellie is a power-hungry,narcisistic witch. She is cunning, manipulative and it wouldn't surprise me one iota to find out that she's a sociopath who could easily kill someone if she thought she'd get away with it. So Fitz thinking that he can divorce Mellie and be with Olivia is a pipe dream.

I am with Blu and CharminglyChandler, this was an excellent episode, and I, too, could write pages on why I adore Olivia Pope. She's an amazing woman who yes, has her flaws, but why blame her for an affair that Fitz started, when he is the one who is married, not her, and besides, I agree that if she were not a woman, and a woman of color at that, we'd not be having any posts about her as a homewrecker. I mean, did anyone think of Monica Lewinsky as a homewrecker? Probably not, since she went after the president and he was just as guilty as she was in the affair. It is Fitz who can't keep it in his pants, and remember it was Olivia who broke it off, several times, because she felt terrible about falling in love with him and having an affair.

  20. vish

I think people are being a little presumptuous. 3 days to go for the election. So still anything could have happened. What if olivia used pope and associates to prevent the rigging.(Well huck can do that!)..and yet the president won. What if he did win both florida and ohio rendering the rigging worthless?
If olivia is well and truly involved then surely she is going to jail along with the rest of them.

The speech that Olivia gave Edison may be the best of the season. Those lines were on fire and on point. I maybe fist bumped her in my mind for that. He has been such a bore, and the fact he just keeps letting himself in to her home is absolutely out of line. I wanted him to be a good man, but he's just another man who wants what he wants with no regard to what she wants. Olivia clearly has a type.

I get more and more nervous week by week about the election rigging coming out. Clearly we are headed there. And I hate it. I don't want to watch an impeachment or a drawn out arc where Fitz loses everything he thought he learned because the people who were his people did the unspeakable. But where does the show go? Something is coming of it, but do with have a Scandal with out Fitz as president? Do we have a Scandal without Olivia sleeping with him (and thus being the biggest Scandal of all?). I just get more nervous and it's getting hard to watch it come to a head!

You know I've hated this infidelity aspect for many reasons. But it's so hard to hate it when it's clear that time and time again one woman was making choices purely about how much they care about him. Even the actions of late have been selfish. If Fitz had woken up and not been president? I don't think he would have cared nearly as much as Mellie cared. And he had to push himself further than he should have simply to keep those he cares about out of prison. Mellie's dealings with him were more about how everything effects the presidency and her stances as First Lady though his as President. It's gross. And I hate seeing it. Him asking for a divorce was so less than shocking, but the fact remains that over Mellie's dead body will she give up her hold as First Lady. Not after what she's done to get there.

I think that Olivia made that choice because of her overwhelming guilt over their actions. That when his "people" asked her what she wanted, each stating what they would get out of his presidency, she wasn't being selfish. The only thing she got out of it was the love of her life achieving his dream. Olivia made/makes wrong choices every time it concerns Fitz. She's intelligent enough to know that. I am always interested to see where her internal battle takes her.

  24. TooSilver

There's too much rationalising and justifying for Olivia. She did a bad thing for a personal reason. That's it. She made the decision, time to own it. Fitz is no angel and has some huge issues himself, but he is called out for every single one. I'd love to see the same scrutiny for Olivia. Fitz may be having an affair but he's not having one by himself. For all that people claim this relationship is a bad thing, it would be good to remember Olivia is the one in the WH kissing Fitz.

  25. TooSilver

Miranda, sorry but that's on Olivia. Olivia did not have to start sleeping with Fitz. She did not have to participate in a coverup. Those were her choices. I feel like some people are trying to shift any kind of responsibility for her choices to anyone BUT Olivia. These are HER choices. She hasn't owned them and that's why she struggles and that's why she's in pain and is miserable. People are hard on Fitz but no one can accuse him of not confronting his reality and he's now actively trying to do something about. Can we say the same about Olivia?
