The Mentalist Review: The Alien Lizard Vibe

at . Comments

That nurse wasn't kidding. Agent Kirkland definitely has an alien lizard vibe to him. It's as if we spent "Behind the Red Curtain" waiting for him to rip off his mask and show what he was hiding underneath.

Rigsby is Thrilled

Though Jane has obviously had his suspicions of Kirkland, does he now know he's an agent of Red John? And, if so, can he convince Lisbon?

Kirkland injecting the IV almost made me feel sorry for Jason. The poor guy just woke up from a coma to remember being shot by Lorelei and then had his life snuffed out a moment later. He was still so weak and helpless from his injuries there was nothing he could have done to stop it.

Lisbon was the one who confused me in all of this. She seemed more than happy to hand their one link to Red John over to Kirkland. Was she that worried about her career? Was she actually not suspicious of the creepy federal agent? I was at a loss to the reasoning behind her apparent naivete.

But the best part of the entire episode was Jane enlisting LaRoche to help uncover the scheme of the nonexistent investor. It was awesome watching these two complex, quirky characters work together as Jane cajoled him in this The Mentalist quote

Jane: You spend your days chasing paperclip thieves. When do you ever get the chance to nail a killer? | permalink

If LaRoche isn't Red John (and I hope he's not), I'd love to see him help Patrick take him down and I beg the writers to give us more of these two in the future.

Jane seemed right at home at the theater. I'd guess that actors are a bit similar to carnie folk. They're all putting on some sort of a show.

Jane sitting in the back of the theater listening to Deandra sing was just so him. Lisbon walked right by him and never saw him there.

Deandra's story was downright heartbreaking. That her colleagues gossiped about her drinking while she was really suffering with multiple sclerosis was depressing. That she was reunited with her biological daughter only to have her permanently torn away over a silly financial scheme was tragic.

Lastly, the beautiful Grace Van Pelt was back at the CBI and it's been far too long. Now the question becomes: will Rigsby find the guts to make a play for her?

Were you surprised Kirkland took out Jason? Is Lisbon being naive and do you think Jane now knows that Kirkland works for Red John?

@rationalgal do you think if jane professed love, lisbon would be more incentivized to catching red john than she is now? i don't see that. don't know what it would mean in real life but for the story i think they have to be kept apart. if one of them slips - and it would have to be teresa this time, jane did it last year - that could be a great twist of the story. could see them doing that soon.

Regardless of the anguish both Jane and Lisbon suffer because of their backgrounds, it is not so deep that they can't imagine and yearn for the life they really want. It shows on their faces in episode after episode. It's all there: the pain, the loneliness, the need for someone to love and to love them. Finally declaring that (necessarily secretly under the circumstances) would help them move on to a better emotional state. They have been in misery for at least 10 years (Jane) and possibly longer for Lisbon. No point in continuing it for no good reason. It would be a sign of mental illness to do that.

I should say MORE normalized relationship. It can't be fully normalized until Red John is dead, for the reasons @rationalgal describes. In a way, it's more fair to Lisbon to know how Jane feels. She can always opt to say no, I can't do that, Jane, it's more than I want to commit to.

The point of Jane and Lisbon secretly declaring their feelings is to continue to protect Lisbon from being targeted by RJ. If they did it openly RJ would gleefully plan the most horrendous death imaginable for Lisbon. Maintaining their sibling-type relationship in public helps keep RJ off guard in that area. Both the emotional and the practical need for revenge remain because neither Jane nor Lisbon are safe as long as RJ is alive. There is no way out other than the pursuit and death of RJ. It will be achieved more quickly if Jane and Lisbon work together with a mutual understanding of their feelings and the goal of living them openly as soon as possible.

OMG @Watcher Are you defaming the legacy of Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee??? Sam is a married man! ;-) A normalized relationship between Jane and Lisbon could be very helpful and it doesn't have to stop the pursuit of Red John at all.

I do think an understanding between Jane and Lisbon about their feelings would work well. I can see that as energizing both of them to find and kill RJ as quickly as possible, working together. Lisbon would certainly put all her law enforcement skills into finding RJ now that she knows how Jane feels. I do expect her to be the one who finally breaks the case re RJ so a viable plan for his capture can be formed. Jane is good only at mind reading. He won't find RJ without the determined help of Lisbon. They would both be excellent at hiding their feelings to the public, since they have done it so well with their personal backgrounds. Jane has been told often enough that no one should be alone. Knowing their mutual feelings would make both function much better.

@hc- I do completely agree with you on that: if he confesses his love for Lisbon, then that should come first. To continue making RJ his priority after that, and keep Lisbon just waiting, would be an asshole move.

@KM - I can totally see how Frodo and Sam relate to Jane and Lisbon. Great comparison! And going back to a theme touched on before, while I don't really agree with the idea that Jane and Red John have a homoerotic element in their relationship, I do see that with Frodo and Sam :-)

@huisclothes I think Teresa would be an added reason to find RJ, a living reason.

@entwife i don't wish patrick to suffer. i want him to have everything. but until he catches red john, he has to remain alone. the dynamics of the story demand it. if patrick is working with a net (he has this great woman he's in love with in the offing), the pain will be less painful, the highs less high. really, if he and teresa declare their love, what the hell is he doing pursuing red john to avenge angela and charlotte? wouldn't his love for teresa be as or more important? then he really seems like an asshole acting out of pride. so i hope he doesn't allow himself the luxury of professing love.
patrick has to be the beautiful, brilliant sunny character with the infinitely dark inner life. the pain is what makes the sunny so blindingly bright.
