The Mentalist Review: The Alien Lizard Vibe

at . Comments

That nurse wasn't kidding. Agent Kirkland definitely has an alien lizard vibe to him. It's as if we spent "Behind the Red Curtain" waiting for him to rip off his mask and show what he was hiding underneath.

Rigsby is Thrilled

Though Jane has obviously had his suspicions of Kirkland, does he now know he's an agent of Red John? And, if so, can he convince Lisbon?

Kirkland injecting the IV almost made me feel sorry for Jason. The poor guy just woke up from a coma to remember being shot by Lorelei and then had his life snuffed out a moment later. He was still so weak and helpless from his injuries there was nothing he could have done to stop it.

Lisbon was the one who confused me in all of this. She seemed more than happy to hand their one link to Red John over to Kirkland. Was she that worried about her career? Was she actually not suspicious of the creepy federal agent? I was at a loss to the reasoning behind her apparent naivete.

But the best part of the entire episode was Jane enlisting LaRoche to help uncover the scheme of the nonexistent investor. It was awesome watching these two complex, quirky characters work together as Jane cajoled him in this The Mentalist quote

Jane: You spend your days chasing paperclip thieves. When do you ever get the chance to nail a killer? | permalink

If LaRoche isn't Red John (and I hope he's not), I'd love to see him help Patrick take him down and I beg the writers to give us more of these two in the future.

Jane seemed right at home at the theater. I'd guess that actors are a bit similar to carnie folk. They're all putting on some sort of a show.

Jane sitting in the back of the theater listening to Deandra sing was just so him. Lisbon walked right by him and never saw him there.

Deandra's story was downright heartbreaking. That her colleagues gossiped about her drinking while she was really suffering with multiple sclerosis was depressing. That she was reunited with her biological daughter only to have her permanently torn away over a silly financial scheme was tragic.

Lastly, the beautiful Grace Van Pelt was back at the CBI and it's been far too long. Now the question becomes: will Rigsby find the guts to make a play for her?

Were you surprised Kirkland took out Jason? Is Lisbon being naive and do you think Jane now knows that Kirkland works for Red John?

The predictablity in this show is huge. RJ Minion kills/gets killed. Jane almost getting RJ/Rj pulls a fast one and gets away. The list goes on and on and we still don't know who RJ is. I can understand why some people hate the RJ plot as it seems to go NOWHERE. Even in a mystery novel the killer is slowly revealed to the reader, but usually the clues that lead up to the reveal has given the reader an idea on who it is. It becomes fun to see if your guess is right. NOT FUN...It makes no sense and never lets the watcher in on anything. NO one has that kind of power and it makes it seem to be a very stupid plot with NO RESOLUTION until the end of the series. Which to a lot, makes it a waste of time. A lot of us want to see the aftermath of getting RJ, but I am sad to say I bet we never get to see that.

Also where does it leave Tom Szentgyorgyi's comment that the season 5 finale will show RJ is among a set of people Jane is uniquely qualified to investigate (paraphrasing)?

@Guest You bring up a point I really like about this episode. And that is, maybe for the first time, the viewers have witnessed something important about Red John that Jane and Lisbon do not know. Although Jane is certainly concluding Kirkland is a minion (at least), we KNOW he is. Also, about "Do you recognize me?" It occurs to me that the importance of this question to Lennon could also be that Kirkland actually is RJ and has altered his appearance since last actually meeting face to face with Lennon. In that case, the fact that Lennon was so confused and obviously did not recognize him must have eased Kirkland's mind, and he was very agitated. Jane would be more at risk than ever, especially given Kirkland's vibe that he is sick of our mentalist.

@guest: And he does match the physical descriptions given through the series and is about the right age. Certainly creepy enough. Wonder if he is left handed? And Bruno has said whoever it is will disappoint.... My biggest worry is that if this is RJ it may mean they are racing to tie up the RJ arc to end the series this season. THAT would be a huge disappointment. Nah...Kirkland as RJ is just too obvious. Isn't it? Here's hoping.

I love TM but I sometimes am fed up with the same RJ scenarios over and over again, I know Lennon would get killed and so it frustrated me. I also hope things will really move on in the next episodes and they'll start something new.

@Katempw...I hope I am wrong too. lol Because if I'm not, it will be more then a big let down, it would make the whole series dumb and disjointed as some of the previous clues wouldn't fit. I just have a feeling that this plot was never planned out from beginning to end and the writers are makeing up stuff as they go along. If we just go with what has been shown this season, Kirkland fits. Him appearing on the 100th ep, has to have some point. I hope we find out who is RJ at the end of this season (Jane doesn't know) so when can worry when he appears on screen and wonder how Jane is going to figure it out. I think that would be good.

When is this RED JOHN Crap going to be over?
I am truly tired of this. I want the show to move on to something else.
Please Please find him soon, and move forward with another serious problem.

@guest I do hope you are wrong and that this is one giant, obvious red herring. Trusting Bruno here.

It probably will end up that Kirkland IS Red John. He first appeared in the 100th ep, he has a speech problem, shook Janes hand, and has access to Lisbon. I think will will all be let down on the big reveal. The red herring is making us think he is only a minion and not the real thing. lol

Yes @estatica and @Mr. Mister, I do agree there are multiple ways to look at Kirkland's "Do you recognize me?" Obviously a very important question to him, he was quite emotional and determined to have the answer. It was clear to me that Lennon did not recognize him and was confused by the question. Kind of odd when Kirkland injected Lennon with the drug to kill him, he also tried to comfort the man that it would soon be over, even covered Lennon's hands at his chest, kind of a comfort shake. Creepy. Kirkland looked very scared, and not just about possibly being caught.
