The Mentalist Review: The Alien Lizard Vibe

by at . Comments

That nurse wasn't kidding. Agent Kirkland definitely has an alien lizard vibe to him. It's as if we spent "Behind the Red Curtain" waiting for him to rip off his mask and show what he was hiding underneath.

Rigsby is Thrilled

Though Jane has obviously had his suspicions of Kirkland, does he now know he's an agent of Red John? And, if so, can he convince Lisbon?

Kirkland injecting the IV almost made me feel sorry for Jason. The poor guy just woke up from a coma to remember being shot by Lorelei and then had his life snuffed out a moment later. He was still so weak and helpless from his injuries there was nothing he could have done to stop it.

Lisbon was the one who confused me in all of this. She seemed more than happy to hand their one link to Red John over to Kirkland. Was she that worried about her career? Was she actually not suspicious of the creepy federal agent? I was at a loss to the reasoning behind her apparent naivete.

But the best part of the entire episode was Jane enlisting LaRoche to help uncover the scheme of the nonexistent investor. It was awesome watching these two complex, quirky characters work together as Jane cajoled him in this The Mentalist quote

Jane: You spend your days chasing paperclip thieves. When do you ever get the chance to nail a killer? | permalink

If LaRoche isn't Red John (and I hope he's not), I'd love to see him help Patrick take him down and I beg the writers to give us more of these two in the future.

Jane seemed right at home at the theater. I'd guess that actors are a bit similar to carnie folk. They're all putting on some sort of a show.

Jane sitting in the back of the theater listening to Deandra sing was just so him. Lisbon walked right by him and never saw him there.

Deandra's story was downright heartbreaking. That her colleagues gossiped about her drinking while she was really suffering with multiple sclerosis was depressing. That she was reunited with her biological daughter only to have her permanently torn away over a silly financial scheme was tragic.

Lastly, the beautiful Grace Van Pelt was back at the CBI and it's been far too long. Now the question becomes: will Rigsby find the guts to make a play for her?

Were you surprised Kirkland took out Jason? Is Lisbon being naive and do you think Jane now knows that Kirkland works for Red John?

@entwife i don't know how lisbon could or should make a judgement about what would trigger hoo-doo on jane's part. though certainly most of what he's done has wound up being for naught. i was toting up last night how many times he's thwarted rj and came up with four. so jane may not be good at it but he's better than everyone else.
it's typical of the writers to just drop stuff. has the list been mentioned since red barn? that's when we re-met hafner. the only connection i remember was in twbb, lisbon came to the lair where jane was looking at this wall of handshakes. really does drive me crazy because it feels like it would take very little to weave in those threads as they knit. and it would greatly enrich or experience.
instead of these modular episodes, they could have done something more with visualize or hafner. do they have so little substantive story?

I assume that the writers expect us to know that ideas, thoughts, leads, et cetera, are communicated without our witnessing the exchange. A benign example would be Lisbon's poker group. We never witnessed her telling Jane, but episodes later we here Jane bring it up to her. I think they just assume that we understand that their dialogs keep going. I, thus, assume that if any characters have a rough interchange and then we see them in a better place than the necessary amends have been made. I could be wrong. Hence, I assume that Jane knows about Heffnar and Lisbon has an idea about Jane's list, knows his web. We the audience don't know we're not their partners. We are flies on the wall, and when light source fade we fly in search of a new one.

I agree with Entwife. If she withheld information it wouldn't be just to have something he didn't or to even the score. It would be to prevent a bad situation. He does have a history of running off and doing things that are unwise. With his behavior getting worse and worse, if the show really does continue two more seasons it may get to the point where she does leave him out of things. He is getting progressively more reckless, which is dangerous for everybody involved. Maybe that is the solution. She doesn't have the backbone to kick him off the team. Maybe her "compromise" with herself would eventually be to keep certain information to herself to prevent Jane from getting people killed or thrown in prison. Doubt they will do it, although I think it would be an interesting story line for the show. Can we really have 2 more years of Jane lying to her and Lisbon looking hurt for 5 minutes then turning around and singing a song for him? This would be new.

@huisclothes I'm not sure Lisbon would withhold info just to have something Jane doesn't or maybe to show him she could play the same game or something. I would assume she would do it to keep him from running of half-cocked to do some secret hoo-doo about it or something. I'm not sure why the writers wouldn't let us know for sure that she told Jane Hafner was in Visualize. I don't think she did, or maybe we would have heard him say something, think it out, underline the name in his list--something. But no, we got nada, etc.

@watcher. i do have a double standard here, i guess. i can't imagine teresa not telling jane about hafner. or withholding any new leads or info on the rj case. guess i would see it as a betrayal and foolish. but i expect jane to be working all sorts of angles at all times without her knowledge.
i guess if she withheld info like the truth about hafner, it would seem like she was trying to have something that jane didn't have just to do it. to make a pointless point. i think when jane withholds from teresa, it's because she'd be hurt, could be compromised or might try to stop him from doing what he wanted. and he would defy her anyway.
teresa is an officer of the law and jane is more of a spy. all shadows and grey areas. i don't think she'd withhold from him and i expect him to share with her only on a need-to-know basis. question is, will that change?

two big dangling threads. the list and hafner. wonder if the actor is scheduled for a return this season? will look up his name.
red sky at night was a terrific opening episode. it was the intro of jane's thinking room. he looked so wild and grungy and half-crazy throughout. when teresa said there's someone i want you to meet. and he said, you're trying to trick me but i guess i owe you the chance. the way he turned and swooped down on lisbon when the young girl says, agent lisbon says if anyone can find who killed my dad, you can. and in the final scene, a masterpiece, the way he wheels around and says, "people who get close to me, bad things happen to." at that point, that was the darkest i'd ever seen him.

@KM hadn't thought about that scene in that way. Pretty cool for Lisbon!

@Entwife - I wondered if she told him about Hafner. There is so much they leave us in the dark about. I really wonder how much, if any, of his list he shared with her. They left us with that little cliff hanger, and never followed up. My guess is he gave her a few names to placate her, but probably withheld the majority. But who knows?

@KM- I had forgotten how that scene went. You're right. That was very Jane like. She has clearly learned a few tricks from him over the years.

I can only think of two incidences where Lisbon has been the manipulative, lying, less than honest partner. The first was 3*1 or "Red Sky At Night" where Hightower ordered her to get Jane involved with the case. So she manipulated him into meeting the victims daughter. The second being in "Crimson Ticket/ Red Glass Bead". Am I missing anything else?

The Mentalist Season 5 Episode 18 Quotes

Lisbon: If you must break the rules, break them on your own time.
Jane: When am I not on my own time?

Lisbon: You're playing with fire.
Jane: There are worse things to play with.
