The Mentalist Review: An Odd Little Town

by at . Comments

It was a "Red Letter Day" on The Mentalist, as the oddities spread from the town of Percy, California to Jane's attic. The latter had to do with Agent Bob Kirkland.

Jane's Wild West

Lisbon and Kirkland shared the most uncomfortable cup of coffee I've ever witnessed. What's the opposite of chemistry? Repulsion? Teresa looked as though she couldn't flee the scene fast enough.

Just when I thought Kirkland couldn't get any creepier, he did. As Jane and Lisbon mentioned in this The Mentalist quote

Jane: Don't you think it's odd, Homeland Security's fascination with a California serial killer?
Lisbon: Everything about Bob Kirkland is odd. You can add that to the list. | permalink

But it just got odder. It was no surprise that he had his agents break into Jane's attic to see what he had on Red John... but what was his purpose? Was it to let Red John know what Jane had on him? Is he actually Red John and just admiring Jane's handiwork? I'm really not sure.

Percy, California turned out to be just as odd as the man who owned it. When Hollis snarled at his son that he should have known Julianna was his sister, I could completely understand why he snapped and killed him. What a horrible nightmare.

The best part of the Wild West setting was that it allowed Jane to sharpen his skills and relive a bit of his carnie days. I could only laugh when Jane told Kevin that his magic sucked eggs. It seemed so odd to hear those words come out of the normally more eloquent Patrick Jane.

Another highlight was allowing Rigsby to use his arson skills to crack the case of the cabin fires. It's always nice to be reminded that there is a smart investigator behind that Wayne Rigsby blank stare.

Even better was having Cho call out Rigsby for being dense when it came to Grace.

You're still in love with her but instead of telling her you bought her a plant. | permalink

That about summed it up. Of course the moment Wayne got the nerve to tell her how he felt I knew what was coming. The new boyfriend walked off the elevator.

Do you think Duncan will be another Red John minion? Perhaps the next Jack the Ripper? Married with a secret family? Knowing Grace's luck with love it could be all of the above.

Does Wayne have a chance with Grace? What's your theory on Kirkland's end game? And what will Patrick do now that he knows his fortress of solitude has been compromised? Tell me your theories before the next The Mentalist.

@huisclothes - imagine a whole bunch of rotted Kristinas that are after poor Patrick! He's trying to escape, but his movements are kind of sluggish (he got struck by lightning - and since he is wearing his tin foil hat, it didn't do him any good)! So one of the Kristinas catches up to him, gropes at his hiney, he falls and gets smothered by all the other Kristinas. FIN!

Huisclothes

@entwife. how do you know kristina smelled so good?

Well @huisclothes I have to agree with you that Lorelei is a great character. Just tossing her in there made shit fly all over the place!

Avatar

yes @huisclothes, like Kristina. Only rotted.

@entwife eww, i don't get the rules of zombies. am very suggestible to anything supernatural - every time i see a certain kind of scary movie, my hub winds up having to take me to the bathroom in the middle of the night for the next three years - and i don't like a weird face popping up where it shouldn't be so i don't want them anywhere near patrick. are they kind of like kristina?

@bonaduz A wig would be terrific! Great idea! And the story definitely needs more whacking!!! btw @creamy started all this! :-)

i love lorelei. what a great character. dastardly and charming. sexy and pathetic. smart and tragic. i would love her to come back. even just as a flashback. she's an incredible female character. one of the best on tv. emanuelle chiriqui did a brilliant job. then they get rid of her so we could spend more time on what...rigsby? don't know why they killed her. what was the percentage in that? she could be out there evading red john, could drop in any second and turn the world upside down. more emotional moments between jane and lisbon. more intense scenes with patrick. what was the upside in having her dead? it's not like these writers come up with excellent characters all the time. volker? pff, mr cartoon. besides the team, we've had minelli, bosco, la roche, stiles, erica flynn, mashburn and lorelei martins. no one likes kristina frye (blecch). still not hooked on kirkland and bertram doesn't have much going for him. pisses me off that lorelei's no more.

Would a tin foil hat not help Jane as well? He could make one for himself and for Lisbon. He is good at crafts, it relaxes him. They could wear a wig over top of it, so the zombies can not see it! Of course they would have to cut a little hole in the wig for the antenna-looking twisty spike! Now in disguise Jane and Lisbon and a whole whack of zombies can hunt RJ down and because zombies move awkwardly, Jane runs faster, catches RJ and decapitates him with his sword. FIN!

It's very hard to teach zombies when you're not much smarter than them. Jane can't wear a tin foil hat when he's in a crowd of zombies because sooner or later they notice it and become dully but intractably curious (if you can call a zombie curious) and intent on removing it. After which they would eat his prodigious brain. Lisbon of course hates it when Jane spends time with them and comes back to headquarters a stinky mess from hanging with zombies, trailing smut and smegma all over the floors and office furniture. She swears every time she's going to take the fire hose to him.

Jane is able to walk amongst the zombies if he is very careful with his biofeedback to tamp down his prodigious brain waves. But he has some awkward and dangerous and hilarity ensues consequences when he's not much smarter than a zombie. Takes much training and self-control and can only be managed for short periods of time.
