The Mentalist Review: An Odd Little Town

by at . Comments

It was a "Red Letter Day" on The Mentalist, as the oddities spread from the town of Percy, California to Jane's attic. The latter had to do with Agent Bob Kirkland.

Jane's Wild West

Lisbon and Kirkland shared the most uncomfortable cup of coffee I've ever witnessed. What's the opposite of chemistry? Repulsion? Teresa looked as though she couldn't flee the scene fast enough.

Just when I thought Kirkland couldn't get any creepier, he did. As Jane and Lisbon mentioned in this The Mentalist quote

Jane: Don't you think it's odd, Homeland Security's fascination with a California serial killer?
Lisbon: Everything about Bob Kirkland is odd. You can add that to the list. | permalink

But it just got odder. It was no surprise that he had his agents break into Jane's attic to see what he had on Red John... but what was his purpose? Was it to let Red John know what Jane had on him? Is he actually Red John and just admiring Jane's handiwork? I'm really not sure.

Percy, California turned out to be just as odd as the man who owned it. When Hollis snarled at his son that he should have known Julianna was his sister, I could completely understand why he snapped and killed him. What a horrible nightmare.

The best part of the Wild West setting was that it allowed Jane to sharpen his skills and relive a bit of his carnie days. I could only laugh when Jane told Kevin that his magic sucked eggs. It seemed so odd to hear those words come out of the normally more eloquent Patrick Jane.

Another highlight was allowing Rigsby to use his arson skills to crack the case of the cabin fires. It's always nice to be reminded that there is a smart investigator behind that Wayne Rigsby blank stare.

Even better was having Cho call out Rigsby for being dense when it came to Grace.

You're still in love with her but instead of telling her you bought her a plant. | permalink

That about summed it up. Of course the moment Wayne got the nerve to tell her how he felt I knew what was coming. The new boyfriend walked off the elevator.

Do you think Duncan will be another Red John minion? Perhaps the next Jack the Ripper? Married with a secret family? Knowing Grace's luck with love it could be all of the above.

Does Wayne have a chance with Grace? What's your theory on Kirkland's end game? And what will Patrick do now that he knows his fortress of solitude has been compromised? Tell me your theories before the next The Mentalist.

Lisbon in front of the attic door: "I need you Jane!"
Jane opens the door: "It's nice to be needed - anything for you!"

(cont.) I'm also wondering if the board that they've taken a picture of is the real thing or something that Jane has put there as bait to throw them off. I find it hard to believe that Jane would leave something actually useful there when he was expecting people to break in (he smiled when he noticed the door had been opened.) In addition, whenever Lisbon came to visit him, he would open the door, talk to her, close the door again, do something, and then open it again to leave. I always wondered what he was setting up or covering up in there before he left if he was going to lock the door anyway.

(cont.)...have Patrick Jane's notes on himself. Even if it is to see where Jane is at with the investigation, a brief overview of Jane's board would be sufficient. He is the one that knows his own murders the best, he doesn't need to analyze Jane's notes and timeline for details.
Also Kirkland was very ready to share the photo of Lorelei's sister, which is not really in RJ's best interest to have people quickly connect him to Miranda's death. My only question is why he killed Lennon who could have been a source of RJ information, but on the other hand, before he did the injection, he didn't say anything typical like "RJ said hi".

First I want to say I've really enjoyed your reviews. I am fairly new to the Mentalist. I watched everything from the beginning in one huge marathon over the last few weeks after I got sick of Castle. Perhaps because I didn't have to actually wait 5 years for the Red John plot to develop, I am still extremely intrigued and quite happy with the pacing so far. I also believe that the show would be over when they resolve this primary plot, there's no point doing weekly episodic murder cases without something to string it all together, so we won't be getting any definitive answers any time soon. Still RJ episodes remain the best ones in any season.
After this episode, I do not believe that Kirkland is Red John or working for RJ, his suspicious behavior is too obvious. Red John does not stay well hidden for so many years with such a bad cover. Kirkland clearly has his own agenda, and I'm beginning to think that he is running his own search for Red John. The real RJ does not need to have Patrick Jane's notes on himself; even if it is to see where Jane is at with the investigation, a brief overview of Jane's board would be enough. He is the one that knows his own kills the best, he doesn't need to analyze Jane's notes and timeline in detail.

@katempw - it's on at 4.00 p.m. pacific time on CTV Atlanic, if you have that.
@KM - I liked 'red letter day' as well. Loved to see Jane happy and doing 'magic'! I'm looking forward to watch the DVD's in the fall. Then I can watch one after the other and have a better connection with the cases. Unfortunately I can't record each show now, so I only see them once or maybe twice. But for now, I'm just glad to watch new episodes and for me it is the best TV-show (not talking about HBO) in years or maybe ever.
Thank you for the reviewbrain reminder. I like the reviews there too.

@HA559: You're probably right. I'm also afraid we'll see the names of the seven suspects at the very end of the finale. I suppose Red John killing someone from Jane's past, and whatever LaRoche's secret reveals will be the sources to the clues that will narrow the list down to seven. Oh man, this is killing me. I just want to knooooowwww ;___;

Hey @Feint, I think it will be 7 suspect but only in the end of the season we will get to see who they all are. He will still be ruling out names, in the next episode he will name a few suspects, same in the one after that and in the final episode of the series, he will only have the 7 pictures of the suspect on his board looking at them with Lisbon and having a cup of tea or drink. It would be good if Kirkland also has a list of suspects on a board at the same time. You see the next episode today, I can watch it tomorrow here, but I choose next Saturday as always.

It seems Canadian TM viewers will suffer tonight as our US sisters and brothers often do: TM will be bumped (well, delayed) to make way for the 2013 JUNO Awards. I can handle it this once. As long as Mr. Bieber doesn't take home all the hardware (not a belieber). Oh, just found out Michael Bublé is hosting. Might be fun after all.

@feint i love that. jane asks lisbon if he can borrow her gun for the day. love that to happen. what a great opening. ecu lisbon's shocked face, cut to credits.

Watching George Romero's Land of the Dead, staring Simon Baker. Pretty wild romp. I never watch zombie movies, so I just watch Simon. Can't figure out what his ultimate role will be here, other than good guy. Cusses a lot, that's fun.

The Mentalist Season 5 Episode 19 Quotes

Jane: Don't you think it's odd, Homeland Security's fascination with a California serial killer?
Lisbon: Everything about Bob Kirkland is odd. You can add that to the list.

Jane: They argued.
Deb: How do you know they argued?
Jane: He is dead.
