The Mentalist Review: An Odd Little Town

at . Comments

It was a "Red Letter Day" on The Mentalist, as the oddities spread from the town of Percy, California to Jane's attic. The latter had to do with Agent Bob Kirkland.

Jane's Wild West

Lisbon and Kirkland shared the most uncomfortable cup of coffee I've ever witnessed. What's the opposite of chemistry? Repulsion? Teresa looked as though she couldn't flee the scene fast enough.

Just when I thought Kirkland couldn't get any creepier, he did. As Jane and Lisbon mentioned in this The Mentalist quote

Jane: Don't you think it's odd, Homeland Security's fascination with a California serial killer?
Lisbon: Everything about Bob Kirkland is odd. You can add that to the list. | permalink

But it just got odder. It was no surprise that he had his agents break into Jane's attic to see what he had on Red John... but what was his purpose? Was it to let Red John know what Jane had on him? Is he actually Red John and just admiring Jane's handiwork? I'm really not sure.

Percy, California turned out to be just as odd as the man who owned it. When Hollis snarled at his son that he should have known Julianna was his sister, I could completely understand why he snapped and killed him. What a horrible nightmare.

The best part of the Wild West setting was that it allowed Jane to sharpen his skills and relive a bit of his carnie days. I could only laugh when Jane told Kevin that his magic sucked eggs. It seemed so odd to hear those words come out of the normally more eloquent Patrick Jane.

Another highlight was allowing Rigsby to use his arson skills to crack the case of the cabin fires. It's always nice to be reminded that there is a smart investigator behind that Wayne Rigsby blank stare.

Even better was having Cho call out Rigsby for being dense when it came to Grace.

You're still in love with her but instead of telling her you bought her a plant. | permalink

That about summed it up. Of course the moment Wayne got the nerve to tell her how he felt I knew what was coming. The new boyfriend walked off the elevator.

Do you think Duncan will be another Red John minion? Perhaps the next Jack the Ripper? Married with a secret family? Knowing Grace's luck with love it could be all of the above.

Does Wayne have a chance with Grace? What's your theory on Kirkland's end game? And what will Patrick do now that he knows his fortress of solitude has been compromised? Tell me your theories before the next The Mentalist.

They all seem so one dimensional now.

Away at a conference so haven't been able to engage much recently but will say I agree wholeheartedly with your last post @huisclothes. Just saw bits of an early (non RJ) ep on bravo and all of the characters were so much more charming and seemed truer than they did this season. Refreshing. Hope the writers can get back to that.

looking forward to the finale but hoping the two episodes before it are substantive and worthwhile. i don't have high hopes about the love doctor unless it provides a framework for jane and lisbon to comment on their own relationship.
i hope the episode after that is an interesting lead-in to the finale a la red rover.
looking back, i thought this was the worst season of the mentalist. found myself pissed off at too many of what i call "old lady" episodes (sunny patrick being self-consciously almost humorous or helping-helping-helping worthy members of deserving populations -- thus giving the writers a buy on creating real drama or good characters since who can criticize something about a vet, an orphaned kid, a woman with ms, a kidnapped boy? wonder what the writers think of how they acquitted themselves? wonder what bruno thinks? he should fire some writer butt.

@bonaduz and mimi re: margin call. gulp. lot of pressure on me. hope you both like it. it's a film simon is really really proud of.

@rationalgal That's probably a good move. Viewers are going to need some reminding if the show is going to pick up some old plot threads and try to do something with them. I'm sure that's the aim of their website game as well. Kirkland does seem like he's gone rogue on some level. I can't figure out why, but it must be pretty important to have devoted this much time to it already. Surely they wouldn't actually drop the whole thing, but they'll have to pick him up pretty quick in the next season so people will remember who he is and what he's been doing.

Hmmmm. Looks like the finale is aimed at reminding us of things in the past that will impact the season 6 story line. Prepping the audience with stuff to think about over the summer and anticipate what's coming. But no Kirkland? That guy bothers me. He is a Homeland Security agent, not a big boss, yet he goes off on his own re the Red John case. It's like the CBI team going off on its own to help Jane. They get reprimanded or suspended. So Kirkland is either doing what he does on orders or with permission of his superiors (who want to find RJ) or he is going rogue for some reason. Does HS assume he is working for HS to find RJ, and Visualize thinks he is working for Visualize to protect RJ so as to protect Visualize? Or he has his own agenda entirely?

can;t wait!!Dear writers, please surprise me!!!!!

hi Feint!
very interesting indeed! god I just cant wait to see the season finale! we know RJ is linked to his past now let's see what it's all about!

Kind of going offtopic here(although not as much as some others :D)...There's some interesting information on the season finale, mainly the guest cast. Lorelei Martins will be there, most likely in a flashback possibly showing scenes we didn't see before(maybe her leaving Patrick a clue?). Brett Partridge will be there for his second episode this season. Patrick's old friends(Samantha and Pete) will be there. Bob Kirkland is NOT in the guest cast. He is in fact not going to appear in any of the remaining episodes this season, which is very interesting. It could even mean he is... ;)

Thank you so much Stephanie in Michigan. I hope it gets a lot of viewers even if it is a rerun......maybe CBS will move it from Sunday to a different night. I would take any night over Sunday. LOL
