The Mentalist Review: The Love Doctor

at . Comments

Turns out Wayne Rigsby was in need of more than just some "Red Velvet Cupcakes," although with his penchant for eating on the job, it was no surprise he tried to steal one of the delectable looking treats from the victim's kitchen.

Is Rigsby in Love?

This installment of The Mentalist was fun from start to finish as Jane got to comment on everything from dieting to fetishes; and a long-stalled relationship finally moved forward.

I felt for the murder victim. Missy was determined to save her crumbling marriage but her husband was cheating, her counselor became obsessed with her feet and his wife shot her in a jealous rage. Talk about lousy luck.

Yet her loss was our gain as it gifted us with some wonderfully amusing moments.

First was Lisbon prodding Jane out of his attic. When telling him he could deal with Red John later didn't work, she took a different route…

Lisbon: Jane, I need you.
Jane: It's nice to be needed. Anything for you Lisbon. | permalink

That certainly got his attention.

Who wouldn't love Patrick Jane as a radio DJ? He certainly has the voice for it, not to mention he knew people would do almost anything to win a prize, no matter what it was.

The look on Lisbon's face when she found Kip tied up in the jungle room was priceless. When Jane jokingly called the whole set up classy I couldn't help but laugh.

I loved that Cho got to interrogate Kip. He's just so matter of fact that nothing Kip said about his affair with the passionate personal trainer could possibly surprise him. But when Cho said that the heart wants what the heart wants, I couldn't help but wonder if the heart was really the pertinent part of the anatomy in Kip's situation.

Wayne and Grace finally having an open conversation about their relationship was long overdue. It was satisfying to see them being honest about their history. From Rigsby's wounded expression when he accused Van Pelt of breaking up with him the first time because the job was more important to her than he was to Van Pelt's frustration over him getting some other woman pregnant, the two finally voiced what they felt.

Of course Wayne continually harping on Grace's homicidal maniac of a fiance was hysterical. It's hard to live that one down.

Wayne looked so stunned when Grace showed up on his doorstep that I wasn't sure he'd pull it together and kiss the girl. And as much as I've waffled on whether I've wanted these two back together, I suddenly found myself rooting for them.

As for our suspect's foot fetish, weird though it may be it hadd me craving a foot massage.

The best part was that it gave Jane the chance to rib Lisbon a little in this The Mentalist quote...

You want to talk to me about the whole foot fetish thing but the Catholic school girl in you tells you that it's not necessarily appropriate. | permalink

Even better was his prodding to find out what flips her switch. The moment, a cross between flirting and teasing put an absolutely delighted expression on Jane's face. He needs to have fun like that more often. I wouldn't mind at all if it were actually with Lisbon.

I agree with @Watcher. I want to catch and kill RJ and move on to other interesting things, of which this show is totally capable, contrary to what Bruno Heller thought years ago.

What is the alternative? If we end this season with 7 known suspects, and they don't catch him next season, do the cut the list to 3 in the season 6 finale? Nobody will be excited by that. I know I won't.

@hc- ending Red John in season 6 could actually be their best chance of getting renewed for a final 7th season. If they truly make real progress on that story throughout the season, as opposed to going nowhere all season and saving everything for the last couple of episodes, I suspect people who aren't die hard fans will be more likely to watch consistently. That might make the difference in a renew/cancel decision.

@watcher i think they'll end red john in season six. hopefully the doubt and dread leading up to renewal will make bruno go into season six with a clear plan so the resolution will be given its due. hope we get a season seven. but if we do, i hope it is of high quality with some compelling and serious arcs. otherwise i will be embarrassed for simon. the mentalist is good when there's a tragic spine to the story. interested to see what they'd do. and of course, i would like there to be movement on the lisbon front. maybe that could be the overriding arc. that she too has some major problem that he must help her resolve before she can move forward in life. he uncovers bits and pieces about her past and what has damaged her. maybe she doesn't even know what's holding her back. could be some good hypnosis opportunity.

I just really hope she is right! Although, even if she is, they will probably catch him in the last episode of the season. But I doubt they will confirm or deny it. Rumors float around all the time. Even if she heard that from some staffer, it might not be a done deal. Could be speculation she heard. I do think that would be the smart thing to do. If Bruno is planning on season 7, but gets cancelled late in season 6, he won't have time to end it the way he wants and we'll get a silly disappointing ending. If he decides to end RJ in season 6, he can then go on to do other things in season 7 (like show us how this impacts Jane and give us more multi-episode arcs like Volker's) if it is renewed. I see no downside.

Thank you for those links, @KM! In one hand, I honestly don't know what to think about Righetti supposedly saying they would catch Red John. It's not as if we didn't know that it's very likely the series will end next season. I just find it odd that she would actually say such a thing. I don't know what sort of person she is, but would any of them be so indiscreet as to actually spill the beans on something so important? Hmm. Can't help thinking the information was manipulated so they would force the responsible people in the show to correct/confirm that statement.

Oh wow. Just wow @KM. I absolutely can't wait! It's going to be so much fun! Not sure about the Red John leak though. Hopefully Bruno has figured out from the TM fan base that it doesn't have to end at all with his killing.

oh wait a minute it's doing something weird here too. It looks like it goes normally but doesn't show up on the page like usual. If I just reload the page from the button on the address bar, it shows up. try doing that @bonaduz and not putting the message in a second time.

@bonaduz I'm not sure what's happening, sorry it's such a hassle for you! When it does that to me, I just hit the reload button on the address bar, click send again on the little menu window and see if it goes through then. I don't know if that would work for you, probably clear as mud. If it works, the regular screen will show up but with the send again menu window still there. Then I click cancel and it clears up.

trying something else now... sorry guys, this is annoying for you, I know!

We've got a case. You can deal with Red John later.
