NCIS Season 11 Spoilers: A Team Divided?

by at . Comments

In the aftermath of a surprising Season 10 finale, which ended with Gibbs' black ops mission and three agents resigning, we look ahead to NCIS Season 11 and what lies ahead for a team in turmoil.

Executive Producer Gary Glasberg spoke with Entertainment Weekly about a season in which he did a lot of unorthodox things, especially for a show largely considered procedural in nature.

After three episodes that felt like season-enders - Eli and Jackie's death, Tiva's car crash, Bodnar's demise - we were left with a surprising finale Tuesday and many questions for NCIS Season 11.

Excerpts from Glasberg's chat with EW below ...

Ziva With Gibbs

On how he conceptualized this story arc: "[For 10 years], Gibbs has handled things but maybe crossed some lines in the way that he handled them. And someone had to have noticed that somewhere along the way."

"There are people paying attention and what if someone - an investigator who, for his own reasons, decided that this was his opportunity, the moment to go after him and basically say, ‘You can’t keep doing this.'"

"Ziva going after Bodnar was just sort of the straw that broke the camel’s back... and, ultimately, a case linked to that head of the Navy SEAL that we were dealing with. All those threads will tie up."

"Gibbs' team resigns and puts their badges down on Vance’s desk and Morrow, along with Vance and others, come to him and say, "We can make all of this go away if you help us with this case.'"

"And, ultimately, jumping ahead four months, we don’t see who’s in that town car but we know it’s someone Fornell is protecting, and we’re left with Fornell in Gibbs’ sights."

"It was definitely a different season-ender but it’s been a very different season and in doing that, I wanted to come through with something that wasn’t what people normally would have expected."

On how we pick up next season: "In the season opener, we will see the progression of time leading up to that moment that everyone just experienced."

"In that progression, we’ll see the case that Gibbs is assigned to, the specifics of the case, how it is unfolded, who the players are, and then we get to the exact moment. It will all make sense."

On whether he knows what Tony, Ziva and Tim have been up to: "I’m starting to. There are a bunch of pieces that are floating around in my head and at some point ... I’ll figure it all out."

On McGee's girlfriend and Palmer's baby: "The lovely Delilah. That will likely pay off at some point as well. We may even meet Delilah. It depends on how much I can handle in the opening episode."

"But, yeah, there are some threads and nuggets - there’s Delilah, there’s the Palmer baby. There are all kinds of little cookies in there that hopefully people will pick up on.

On whether Ziva "friend zoned" Tony: "I don’t think so. I think there’s a little more to it than that. I think they’re sort of dancing around each other and trying to get a sense of how to move forward."

"Based on everything that’s happened in the last year ... we’re letting it slowly percolate and build and hopefully get it to a place that’s going to be satisfying for everybody."

"[The forehead kiss] might not satisfy everyone out there, but I think we’re getting there, She even reaches up with her hand and puts it very gently, and in a lovely way, on his shoulder before that."

"I think [we have] definitely advanced from where we were a year ago."

On his final word on NCIS Season 10: "This has been a really fantastic season for us. Best numbers we’ve ever had ... more viewers than we’ve ever had. I couldn’t be more thrilled with the show."

"We’ve hired a couple of new writers; we’re already working on five or six stories for next season. Everybody is energized and ready to go. We’re going to take a few days off, come back and keep going."

"The show’s in a really fantastic place and we’re constantly surprising each other about where we want to go. And as long as we keep feeling that, I don’t really see an end in sight for NCIS."

Yea, it is middle school. And Tony has never behaved like a middle schooler, right?!? Hmm, I recall in season 1 in the episode "Dead Man Talking" that all Tony could think about was making out with the girl they were investigating, only to make out with her and find out that "she" was actually a "he" and his obvious distress at that. I also recall all his comments about all the women he has slept with over the years. There also how he would ogle Ziva's behind when she would bend over or how he told her he was looking down her top. Gee, kinda middle school behavior to me. How about Abby and all the jumping around and silliness and the things that she does on a regular basis? Middle school. And how about the times that Tony and McGee have rough housed with one another? Very middle school. Do I care? No. But Ziva is hardly the only one who has displayed middle school behavior!

In Boxed In Ziva made it a big point to invite everyone but Tony - a little middle school, don't you think? As far as "tiva" goes, it has already taken a toll on the writing and continuity of the story. The quality of the crime story has diminished greatly as random "tiva" moments are shoehorned in and the show is turned into - The perils and love life of Ziva. This last season finale, with everyone's actual crimes, and even murder, being wiped away because the prosecutor turned out to be an overly ambitious jerk and Gibbs took a dangerous assignment is simply beyond ridiculous. The expected turning a blind eye to crimes committed with slates wiped clean is insulting to anyone who has an expectation of reasonable believability and doesn't have a herd mentality that all is fine because Gibbs says so.

part 2
than that is what you will see. And since the ratings in season 10 have been higher than ever, I highly doubt that people are tired of the show and the drama of Tiva. Even if a million TIVA haters stop watching, it will still be the number one drama.

Really?!? The relationship that Tony and Ziva had in season 3 is far different from the relationship they have now in season 10. Please, they have both grown over the years. So what? She didn't invite a guy she knew for a couple of months to dinner is a lot different than not inviting a friend out for drinks that you have been partnered with for 8 years. This was after Tony wanted to have a "post elevator us" that this occurred. I am tired of this argument. I recall in the episode "Shell Shock" part 1 that it was Tony that took down the subject that he and Ziva went to apprehend while Ziva stood by and watched. It was also Tony being the voice of reason when Ziva and McGee were going behind Gibbs back to hunt for Bodnar. There has also been the sensitive Tony who was there for Ziva after the death of her father and there for McGee when he was struggling with his father. How does that show him as incompetent and the butt of the joke? If you want to see the show as a soap opera than that is what you will see. cont...the writers began to show it and then just stopped. I blame DiNozzo Sr. Seven years of insinuating he was abusive only to make him charismatic and the others all, Tony it's your fault that you haven't forgiven him (I'm looking at you, Abby!). Gibbs is a much better father and mentor figure for him. I guess I just want to see the team treat Tony with the respect and love he deserves instead of like an inconvenient nuisance that they're stuck with. And those are my grievances. I'll get off my soap box now.

Please, just let Tiva go. They're not meant for each other, at all. It's like a bad Lifetime movie. There are a lot of fans who are sick of Tiva as well; just dead that, please. Also, for the love of God, if you don't stop making everything about Ziva and her loyalty to Gibbs and not Tony or Tim's, you're going to make me hate her, and I don't want that. And please treat Tony like the competent agent he is; stop having him always as the butt of the joke. They're really staring to treat him horribly. I've been pissed off about this since 'Boxed In' in season three. Seriously, recently Ziva gets pissed about Tony and McGee not inviting her to play video games and Gibbs defends her but it was fine to have a dinner party and blatantly not invite him all those years ago? And let Tim be the hero for once instead of always behind a desk and let Tony kick some butt instead of it always being Gibbs and Ziva. I also wanna to see more of that wonderful bond that Gibbs and Tony have, the writers began to show it and then just stopped. If Tony and Ziva don't hook up (and they've been teasing it for years) then I agree, that the show will probably lose some of the Ziva demographic. But if they do hook up the show will finally push many of their core audience who will give up on the show that has turned into a soap opera written for teenagers. There will be a show SHEILDS, featuring super heroes up against NCIS next year which will likely be the type of show to cut into the Ziva demographic as well. I really hope that Ziva gets another gig and NCIS can get back to its roots of writing clever, witty episodes with intelligent crime stories featuring a quirky and flawed but competent team who actually like and respect one another. If the show continues to use Nickolodeon type romance formulas, they will lose their core audience.

I beseech tiva fans not to see the first episode of season 11. The writers need to understand that we want tiva. We are fed up with will they/won't they.
If Tony and Ziva are a couple when the show returns, we will see the season 11 premiere. It's time for Tony and Ziva to get together.

NCIS Quotes

McGee: Rule number 70 - keep digging till you hit bottom.
Abby: McGee! There is no rule 70.
McGee: Well, I--
Abby: You just made up a rule. This McGibbs thing has really gone to your head. I don't even recognize you right now.

McGee: All right. Well you should probably know that Abby and I used to date?
Bishop: Ew. Like, each other?
McGee: Yeah.
Bishop: Wait - isn't that a violation of rule 12, never date a....
McGee: It was a long time ago. After we'd broken up, one night I went to her lab. Found a scribbled piece paper; a list. Potential boyfriends had to fulfill certain conditions by a pre-arranged date or else, goodbye.
Bishop: Such as.
McGee: Things started off relatively normal: opening the door for her, flowers, putting the seat down. Then around number 8, it gets uh...
Bishop: What?
McGee: Does she know you have these?
Bishop: Does she know you have these?
McGee: Yeah she wasn't happy when she found out.
Bishop: These are all very specific.
McGee: Yeah.
Bishop: These ideas apply to you?
McGee: No those rules weren't in place when we were together. At least I don't think so.
Bishop: What's with the two month cutoff? Abby's sabotaging herself. I've seen stuff like this before. We have to talk to her.
