Pretty Little Liars Review: Many Masks

at .

"Cat's Cradle" was one boring episode of Pretty Little Liars.

I’m usually on the edge of my seat, but aside from a few smaller moments and interesting turns in dialogue, not much was worthwhile in this installment.

The Creepy Mask Maker

Caleb made his first appearance on Pretty Little Liars Season 4 and wasted no time getting back into the A fray. He really has no fear about getting his hands dirty as he pestered Mr. Marin to make sure that Hannah and Ashley have legal counsel, but later learned that Mr. Marin’s gun is missing after a cash visit from Ashley. Couple that with Ashley’s sorry excuses with Hannah and Ashley is looking pretty guilty.

But this is PLL, I’m not convinced Ashley is the one who ultimately killed Wilden. It’s far too neat; Ashley’s phone, shoes and alibi are far too nice and tidy. A’s text to Aria: “Cleaning up Rosewood, one mean mommy at a time. Dig we must” is more indicative of A’s desire to get rid of all the mommies. Every single mother is slowly being pushed out of the ladies’ lives and without that safety net A can go for the throat with the gals.

As for Ashley’s scene in the bathroom, I’m still trying to figure out what was actually going on in it. She certainly looks guilty, but, again, I’m not buying it just yet. Ashley has shown how far she’s willing to go to protect Hannah and her future and this could be yet another blackmailing scene she has to endure for her.

The mommy targeting doesn’t (perhaps) stop at Ashley, though. The next victim appears to be Pam. Toby said that A prays on you when you’re at your weakest and it appears she might be heading back to claim Emily.

The thing with the masks is also questionable. The mask maker said Ali wanted him to make masks for all of her friends, but none of the ladies received one. It makes me wonder if Liars is finally going to being talking about Courtney. Especially when the small exchange between Melissa and Spencer is considered:

Melissa: Do you suppose other sisters have as much trouble getting along as we do?
Spencer: Uh, there might be a few.
Melissa: Maybe we're just too much alike, and that's the problem. | permalink
Melissa: It might be time for both of us to get out of this little town. If we know what's good for us. | permalink

Melissa always seems to know more than she lets on and her talk about whom Spencer would protect was odd, even for her. As for Melissa’s mask... I don’t even know where to begin.

Finally, Toby and Spencer’s adventure back into Radley to learn more about his mother’s death gives me just enough skepticism to begin to wonder if she really jumped. That’s a big roof to avoid and for Mrs. C to leap past that would take some skill. It’s far more likely she’s either alive or a surprise push out the window caused her death.

Aside from those moments, though, nothing really stood for me in the episode. It was mostly filler. What are your thoughts?

What? We can't make a move without Nancy Drew?
