Burn Notice Series Finale Review: The Final Mission

at . Comments

After more than 100 episodes, Michael Westen completed his final mission.

Bringing down James Kendrick, and saving Fiona from Sonya in the process, resulted in a "Reckoning" for Michael, and in turn he left the CIA, realizing that he no longer wanted to go back to being a spy.

While I admit I still want more Burn Notice, I can say that this ending was so full of awesomeness I wish I could give it more than a 5 star rating.

Final Moments

How incredible was Madeline’s sacrifice? Between her words and Michael’s tears, I couldn't stop crying. I had heard that a major cast member was going to die in the finale, but I honestly didn't expect it to be a self-sacrifice scenario. Well played Mr. Nix, well played indeed.

Of course, as I guessed last week, Michael prevented Sonya from shooting Fiona by shooting her first. I feel a little bad for Sonya; she either wouldn't see or couldn't see how important Fiona was to Michael. Had she realized that she was the key to Michael's loyalties, things might have gone differently.

Did anyone else catch the nod to the pilot (and the opening) with Fiona working in “Shall we shoot them?” There was also Sam’s now famous "You know spies, bunch of bitchy little girls," and of course the hour closed with the line that has opened every episode, “My name is Michael Westen, I used to be a spy...”

I will have to go back and see if Madeline’s or Jesse’s opening credit dialog was worked in, but even if not, those three are a great trifecta of winning for long time fans.

I'm guessing that Fiona, Michael, and Charlie ended up back in Ireland, while there were no signs that I saw, the haunting music that was playing seemed like a good indicator. I hope that Michael and Fiona are able to raise Charlie and stay out of trouble. May not happen, but it’s a nice dream.

Back in Miami you had Sam and Jesse, names cleared by the CIA, getting ready to have Mojitos and possibly take on a case. Or as most fans would like to call it – SPINOFF!

There have been some rumors about a Sam/Jesse spinoff and this reviewer would love it! They could add in a few new characters to help round out the team and you would have me glued to USA for the next 7 seasons!

In the end, we have to say goodbye and what better way to do it, than with a personal message:

Mr. Nix, thank you for 7 wonderful seasons with Michael, Fiona, Madeline, and the gang. You will never know how much this show has meant to me, being one of the last things I shared with my mom before her passing. It was wonderful to get to speak to you and the cast over the years; you have made a fan for life. - Jim

If you are inspired, please feel free to add your own message below. To all the fans who have stopped by, it has been an honor to review this show, here is hoping we are all back talking about Jesse and Sam in the near future!

I thought it was a fitting ending, not perfect, but I was satisfied. A few things exceeded my capacity for suspension of disbelief, but they were forgivable ultimately. Like yeah it's totally believable that James rigged those charges to explode sequentially instead of simultaneously. And how exactly did Michael and Fi get a hold of Charlie after everything? Charlie was with Jesse who the CIA caught and placed in detention which would lead to Charlie in either state custody or foster care. Forgiveable, yes, but highly questionable. I too think Mike and Fi are in Ireland. It wasn't just hinted at by the music but also the shot of the camera panning over the ocean starting with Miami's clear blue water and transitioning to darker north Atlantic water. All in all, thanks Burn Notice for 7 fun seasons.

Loved this show! Sad to see it end. However, I don't think they would be in Ireland- Fi was notorious there - too many enemies.

although just because in the holiday it supposed to be surrey doesnt mean michael and fi were supposed to be in ireland.

I think they probably faked charlies death; acting like he died in the explosion with maddie. but it doesnt make sense that jesse wouldnt have seen michael or fi when he handed him over. although i will ignore all that cause it was spectacular. side note; i think the house in ireland is the same house the cameron diaz stays in in 'the holiday'

Very good final. Did not see the Maddie sacrifice coming. BUT ONE THING IS BUGGING ME. How did they get Charlie. Jessie left him in the bathtub. What happened?

I will miss this show! I love Fiona, Mike, Sam Jesse and Maddy.
Thanks for seven great years.
See you on the spin off with Sam and Jesse.
The final of this show was awsome.
Thank you Matt.

Thanks to Burn Notice for the excellent words that brought that sad wistful feeling to my heart, balanced by some witty banter. Spoken by talented artists that brought the characters to life. A different concept for an anti-hero, camaraderie between true believers that made you long for friends like those, friends that never gave up on you or gave you up, friends that would face danger or death rather than leave you behind. Adventure and action that entertained and even informed, for those that might need a few spy secrets in their daily life. Thank you to the show runners, producers, directors, writers, actors and the crew that made it all happen. You created compelling drama that captured many devoted fans. Thank you and bring on some more. There is so much story left to tell for these complicated, interesting characters. You already have an audience. Isn't that half the battle?

I spent the "Madeline Scene" with my hands over my mouth, tears rolling over my wrists. Talk abut having a Mom/Gramma who loves you.
The cottage Michael, Fiona, and Charlie end up at is supposedly in Surrey, England. It was the home where Kate Winslett's character lived in "The Holiday".

I have been a fan of Burn Notice from the beginning and it went out the same way it came in......as one of the most awesome shows I've ever gotten involved watching. I couldn't imagine how they would do justice to the finale in a one hour show, but I couldn't have been more mistaken. In my opinion this has always been a five star show. however, this finale way surpassed five stars......without a doubt the best series finale ever!!!!!! Will truly miss this show!!

An excellent finale - well-written, well-acted, and well-produced. A credit to all (and special kudos to Sharon Gless, who really played Maddie's sacrifice and love to the hilt!) Michael and Fi's escape from the collapsing building with gouts of flame conveniently following them was not really believable, but this is fiction, so... And did anyone else feel that a building collapsing on itself in gouts of flame was just a bit uncomfortable the day after 9/11? Maybe it's because I'm in New York and was downtown 12 years ago. Of course they were in Ireland - besides the music, the landscape made that quite obvious. Never could buy Gabrielle Anwar as Irish, but it was fitting that the two characters ended up there, where their love began. Spinoff with Jesse and Same could definitely be fun. Thanks for a great 7-year ride, all!

Burn Notice Season 7 Episode 13 Quotes

Fiona: What you did early, plowing into that store and then jumping on the car, almost incinerating yourself.
Michael: It was a calculated risk. I need information.
Sam: Mike don't, we've known each other too long. There is a difference between a necessary risk and a death wish and you know it.
Fiona: Michael I know you are hurting, but what is killing yourself going to prove?

Madeline: I don't want to lose another son.
Michael: Mom. I can't make any promises, sometimes sacrifices have to be made.
